Saturday we had plans to head to our local winery to listen to Jon's friend from high school. He was singing and playing guitar and harmonica as the evening's entertainment. We've heard him before; we're sort of becoming his groupies, and he's really good! Perfect winery entertainment. We assembled our group - us, my parents, Kristal and Jake, and Jon invited a couple he works with to join us. I like to prepare the food and everyone else volunteered to bring something. On the menu was chicken salad sandwiches on either ciabatta rolls or pretzel rolls, your choice.  I also made an oriental slaw salad recipe that a woman at work shared with me.  For dessert I made a pineapple upside-down cake.  All was a huge hit with our crowd! 

This winery does not normally take reservations, but they love my daughter so they were happy to save us a table when she called and asked for them to please save us a table as we are huge fans of their evening's entertainment. This winery is a dog-themed winery - all of their wines are named after their or their friends' dogs. We are a dog-loving bunch of people so it's only natural that we love this winery!  They have been open a year and we were their first customers. For some reason they remember our daughter and even what she wrote in their guestbook that day! Their wines went great with our meal and we spent several hours enjoying the wine and music.

Today I had the day off work in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.  I headed to my best pal's house for an afternoon of catching up with one another while enjoying a cup of tea. Or two.  She also had made a cheesecake with blueberry sauce smothering the top.  After having a piece of that cheesecake I wasn't so sure how hungry I would be for dinner.  I should have known, I'm always hungry enough for dinner!  I pulled in the driveway seconds ahead of Jon coming home from work.  This is where the title of my blog comes into play.....

I had some fresh basil in my fridge and shrimp in my freezer that really needed to be used up.  The shrimp had been hanging out in the freezer for some time now and I was afraid they were going to go to waste.  I did a search of ingredients and came up with a great recipe for shrimp and pasta that sounded good.  One of the ingredients is a 1/4 cup of brandy which you then light with a match.  I've always wanted to burn my food and be able to say it was in the recipe to do so.  I poured the brandy into the pan and carefully held the lighter to the edge of the pan.  Suddenly flames were dancing across the food in the pan!  Just that step alone makes me want to make this recipe again!  It was quite impressive to watch!

I called Jon to the table and he poured the wine.  The recipe also called for a half cup of wine so of course it was only expected that our drink tonight would be the balance of the bottle of wine.  He had chosen a bottle of one of our favorite chardonnay's.  We both agreed that this dish was very good.  Good enough, in fact, to make again and serve to company.  I can't wait to catch my food on fire again!

Hi Ann, you should do a follow up dessert with Bananas Foster at some point too, another fine conflagaratory effort (is that a word?)lol. Great blog as usual.

I've thought about Bananas Foster. I just might do that, and have people over to watch me burn the food!

The evening at the winery and music with family and food sounds awesome! They should name a good cabernet " susie " ! As for your dinner... I've always wanted to catch something on fire on purpose also!!! Just gotta talk Jim into letting me!!!! Awesome read MA!!! This is Terry by the way!

Hi Terry! This is interesting with all the "mystery" guests! haha! The winery had a drawing to name their holiday release - we didn't win. :( But, they do have a Gewurztraminer named Missy, our chocolate lab that died 2 years ago.

About Me
I've been married for 32 years, and live in Ohio. We have a daughter who is married and lives nearby. Our son graduated from college and moved to South Dakota. He has his own place but still goes to visit my sister and brother-in-law and have dinner with them occasionally. We have a black lab that gets to go duck hunting with dad, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels. My husband and I enjoy cooking together with wine. We pop open a bottle of wine and get cooking. :-)

Whenever I can put together a meal that gets many compliments and leaves the diners satisfied is a triumph in my book! I love to cook meals for family and friends.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married we had my grandparent's-in-law over for a pot roast dinner. The meat came out great, but the potatoes and carrots were still half raw. My husband's grandfather went to cut his fork into a carrot and it flew off his plate. He looked at me, winked, and said he loved his carrots that way!
