More Birthdays!

It seems we barely get one birthday over and celebrated and it's time for yet another!  In July we celebrated Federico's birthday.  He chose spaghetti and meatballs for his dinner and a tres leches cake.  I've become quite a pro at the tres leches cakes - I almost know how to make them without pulling out my recipe. His kids wanted me to decorate his cake like a Mexican flag, but I forgot that minor detail.  When they arrived they saw there was no flag on the cake so they set to work making one themselves.  They did a great job and I think that meant more to their dad than if I had attempted one.

Kristal's birthday was August 19th.  Last year we didn't get around to celebrating her birthday until Labor Day.  That turned out to be quite a memorable day around here - that was the day the huge tree decided to fall on our house.  What an event that was, but somehow we managed to still have her cook-out and enjoy the day.  Almost one year later and all repairs are made and our house is like new.  I even got a totally done-over bathroom in the deal.  I'm going to get a new deck, with a screened-in porch as well, but Jon got side-tracked with a job for a paying customer, so......   one day......

This year for Kristal's birthday we actually had time for everyone to gather a little closer to her actual birthday.  Yesterday my brother was going to be in town for a visit, so we decided to just turn it into a real party and celebrate only a week late!  Kristal chose http://allrecipes.com/recipe/kalua-pig-in-a-slow-cooker/detail.aspx<   for sandwiches with macaroni salad, fresh corn-on-the-cob and strawberries and pineapple for her meal.  An easy meal for a crowd.  Chocolate cake with chocolate icing for her birthday cake; one of my all-time favorites.  Since we happen to have an ice-cream store in the corner of our Mexican restaurant, I knew just where to get the best ice cream around!  We had cookies 'n cream, double-chocolate peanut butter, and chocolate rapture to go with the cake.  Chocolate rapture is for serious chocoholics only as it is VERY chocolatey. It's one of my favorites.

Suzy was pretty happy with the guest list.  She loves when company comes and if they bring a four-legged friend for her then it's a perfect time.  Maggie, the cocker-spaniel, arrived and the two dogs spent the day/evening sharing the chew bones and entertaining us playing "Find the Hidden Treats".  Kristal hides pieces of dog treats throughout the house while the dogs are put away in another room.  She then turns them loose and tells them to go find the treats. They know how to play and they would continue searching all night long if someone doesn't stop them.  Even after everyone was gone, Suzy began nonchalantly peeking behind the firewood and rocking chair - just hoping perhaps they had missed a treat earlier.

Once again, as we were enjoying the cake around the dining room table, which had been my grandparents' table before it was mine, we remarked how many celebrations were had around this table.  Too many to count!

Thanks, Cat! We do like to have fun! And part of having fun is eating! ;) I was just reading my blog from last year and her birthday celebration - she chose the same food then as this year! Only difference in the party was no tree fell, thank God!

Thanks, Manella! We do have fun - I'm lucky to have such a great family - both blood and my "adopted" family. :)

Great food, great fun. What more can one ask for? Nothing like a family gathering.

About Me
I've been married for 32 years, and live in Ohio. We have a daughter who is married and lives nearby. Our son graduated from college and moved to South Dakota. He has his own place but still goes to visit my sister and brother-in-law and have dinner with them occasionally. We have a black lab that gets to go duck hunting with dad, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels. We own a Mexican restaurant and are learning alot about the food industry. I love to eat, go camping, read, spend time with family and friends, watch movies, and drink wine; not necessarily in that order.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake - anything chocolate is fine with me. Seafood, chicken dishes and slow-cooker fare.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I enjoy cooking together with wine. We pop open a bottle of wine and get cooking. :-)
My cooking triumphs
Whenever I can put together a meal that gets many compliments and leaves the diners satisfied is a triumph in my book! I love to cook meals for family and friends.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married we had my grandparent's-in-law over for a pot roast dinner. The meat came out great, but the potatoes and carrots were still half raw. My husband's grandfather went to cut his fork into a carrot and it flew off his plate. He looked at me, winked, and said he loved his carrots that way!
