All I Want for Christmas!!

Tonight is the night - the night the big jolly guy breaks into everyone's houses and eats our cookies, drinks our milk, and takes a carrot or two for his reindeer.  In exchange for that, he leaves a few gifts.  He's a pretty amazing guy - in fact I wonder if he's a "guy" at all.  I mean - I don't know many men who can start a job and finish it all in one day!  Mrs. Claus is amazing; I'm sure she's behind Mr. Claus - pushing him all the way.  She knows how to get her man moving!

Now I must apologize here to all the men on AllRecipes.  There are always exceptions to any rule ((That's why I try not to judge people)) and I believe a cooking man is a man who can get things done.  A man who cooks understands the importance of finishing a job once started.  Therefore, I'm sure all the AR men are men just like Santa - if you start a job you finish it!

I haven't made a Christmas list for myself in years but this year I have one.  It's not long, but there's really only one thing on it that I can get for myself.

Dear Santa -  If you ask me I'll tell you that I have been a very good girl this year!  If you ask a lot of other people I'm sure you'll find one or two of them who will agree with me.  Of course you'll have to find the right people to ask.  Anyways... I do have a short list of things I'd like this year.  I'm hoping you can help me out:

1.  the number one thing I would like for Christmas is something that actually got taken away from me - My Blue Star here on AllRecipes.  I always loved that little blue star after my name.  It gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling and made me a part of a special group.  I loved that I belonged to such a special group of wonderful people who all shared the same love - food and cooking!  Now after my name it says I'm a "Pro".  I don't think I'm a Pro and I'm not being paid like a Pro, so personally I'd rather have the Blue Star back.  I know I'm not alone in this, so if you're gonna give me my blue star back please give it back to everyone.  I hope your elves know how to make blue stars - you're going to need a lot of them!

2.  the other thing I'd like for Christmas is more time in the coming year to be able to cook and bake.  There was a time when I could come home from work and whip up a batch of cookies, or prepare a favorite meal.  Now we're lucky if I have time to even go to the grocery store and buy the ingredients for that favorite meal.  I started losing all that time when my kids reached the age of going to school and joining clubs, sports teams, etc.  Now that my kids are 27 and 23 and don't even live at home you'd think I'd have some time again.  I did have time for a very brief moment a year ago.  It fell somewhere between the time period of Steve no longer playing baseball and us acquiring a Mexican Restaurant.  I'm not going to complain - it is quite nice to have Victor and Hugo and Arael as our own personal chefs who can cook anything Mexican we want to eat and then we don't even have to clean up; but I do miss the days of having time to cook and relax.

I realize my #2 wish is something I'll have to work on myself; and I have.  We're getting the restaurant work down to a routine where we only need to actually go there twice or three times a week.  But then something always comes up.  Like it snowed and the snow shovel was broken and there was no salt for the sidewalks, and nobody thought to call the snowplow guy.  These are things they just don't think of.  Obviously we didn't think of them either until after the fact.

My biggest wish is something I am not alone in and I wish it every day.  Santa, you will need some help with this one as we all need to work together on it. I wish for peace on Earth. Merry Christmas and a Happy Prosperous New Year to all my "AllRecipes Family"! May you all find good health and happiness under your tree this year!

Ah! I was just finishing looking up some recipes and thought to myself,"I wonder if there are any blogs to read to go with the last of my coffee before I jump into the kitchen and start the holiday cooking!" Merry Christmas, Mother Ann & family! Happy New Year and may all the things on your list come true!

PS. I liked the star better too but I don't think we are going to get it back even with Santa's help :)

Hey Cat! My hubby just suggested that they should give us the star and they could put the "Pro" inside the star if they really think we need it. He also said we should be asking if we're getting our "pro" pay before the end of the year and will they take taxes out of it?? LOL

visions of sugar plums?? as i was reading your blog- i had a visiond of hundreds of lil elves carrying armloads of blue stars into that big ole building in seattle(A.R.) lol-peace to you and yours Mother Ann-Merry Christmas!!i am so happy all is well at the restaurant!! on another note- just something someone said to me once-i try to apply- maybe you can too-"it is not that you don't HAVE the time- it is that you don't TAKE the time!"- judy-

Dec. 24, 2012 5:08 am
judy - I agree 100% with you about taking the time - and I do. In this I truly do not have the time to take, unless we wanted to eat dinner at around 8:00 pm and I can't eat that late. LOL I always marvel at the people at work who say they don't have time, etc. and then carry on about all the TV shows they watched. I don't watch TV at all - the time I do have to cook a meal a few times a week would be the only time I would have to watch TV and that is NOT a priority to me! Crockpots are wonderful, too. I have the time at 6:00 am before I leave for work to put it all together; then it's ready when we get home. Sunday's are my one day where there is plenty of time for cooking and baking. And, now I have that vision of all those elves lugging in the stars, too! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Apology accepted. This ol' Santa made 12 dozen cookies yesterday to pass out to the neighbors. Hmm...wish #1, not happening. Wish #2, hopefully. Biggest wish, pray that it happens.

I love your wishes and of course Mrs. Claus is a big part of Christmas. If Santa is like my husband I know he needs a big push and a bit of nagging to get things done.

Dec. 24, 2012 10:31 am
I hope you get all of your wishes, especially the "Peace on Earth" bit. Though it's a toss up which we'll get first, the blue stars or the peace.

bd.weld - That's a lot of cookies to make in one day! I made about 3 times that many but spread it out over a couple weeks. Most of them went to mine and hubby's work and friends.

Iceemama - I've found the more I nag the less he does. I just make him believe it was all his idea! LOL

Dec. 24, 2012 12:20 pm
Doc Simonson - I doubt we'll ever get either... but a girl can dream and wish...

Mother Ann,hope all your wishes come true,Merry Christmas, and a very fruitful New Year.

manella - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!

I couldn't believe it myself but I started making the cookies early in the morning and worked through beer thirty. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Merry Christmas, Mother Ann and Jon! I agree with all your wishes however, I am rather enjoying the way many folks here have worked that "PRO" into something included with their names.

Dec. 24, 2012 3:49 pm
Mother Ann - - Merry Christmas to you and your family. I agree with your "pro" wish - - but I also agree with Mike Harvey that maybe we all need to make lemonade out of lemons - - so . . . let's turn our cookie "sugar high" into Christmas "magic" and turn the "pro" into something that adds a little "flair" to our cooking style or personality type - - - - like "pro-mise I won't make that again" - - - or - - - "pro-pelling last night's dinner into the disposal" - - or - - "the no's and the pro's" - - - anyway, we can probably come up with some real rib-ticklers. And as for wish #2 - - - as a restaurant proprietor, if the cook doesn't show up. . you're the cook - if the waitress doesn't show up. . you're the waitress, if the dishwasher doesn't show up. . . you get the picture - - - so wish #2 may be a dream most days - - but you can dream!! Merry Christmas!!

Mike, I do have to agree with you - there are some with very creative minds and I'm getting a kick out of their creativity!

Dec. 25, 2012 4:24 am
luv2cook- you came up with some good "pro" flair! Luckily for me I haven't had to be the cook, waitress, or dishwasher.... yet! LOL It just seems there is always something that needs our attention. Seriously - we only spend about 15 hours a week "working" on restaurant "stuff" - but it seems we are always needed at that time right after work and just before bedtime. It has been fun, though! My favorite "emergencies" have been the days our manager's (and his wife is a server) babysitter cancels out on them - then I get to be the babysitter and I love their 3 kids like grandchildren! :)

LOL! Yep we are a creative bunch here aren't we? Loved luv2cook's comment!

The blue PROs threw me for a loop when I first logged back on. What is the rationale behind it? Why do they insist on tinkering with things that ha been working just fine? Why do I ask dumb questions? Enjoy the rest of the holidays and maybe you can make a New Years Resolution out of wish #2.

Dec. 26, 2012 5:07 am
Good to see you back here BSM! Hope all is well, or at least getting better with you! Great minds must think alike - I have decided to make #2 my New Year's Resolution. :) We'll see how that goes!

Hi, Mother Ann! I'm sorry you didn't get your blue star back for Christmas! It makes me sad the AR Santa grants few wishes for it's "family". Wishing you a very Happy New Year!!

Hey out there, this is my first comment on your blog.I have been cooking for 40 plus years, but this doesnt make me a pro, as I still have flops so..... I would also like my blue star back to remind me of the good meals I have made over the years. Happy New Years to all, and I pray also for world peace.

Dec. 28, 2012 7:37 pm
Mother Ann, your list this year was a good one, but I figured the pro-bability of getting your blue star back was slim to none. Pro-ponents of the blue star have been pretty peeved about being deemed pro-fessional. (Hehe, gotta play the game with luv2cook.)

Mother Ann, I miss the little blue star, also. It had much more character than the slick, stream-lined blue "pro". Looks more like a guy thing to me (sorry buzz-boys!) With you, I hope for an end of warfare, and I pray for everyone everywhere to have "enough"--food, shelter and love. May you find the peace you need for your soul in the New Year!

Mickdee- Happy New Year! At least I knew I wasn't alone in my wishes.

Pilotco77- thanks for commenting! That blue star seems to mean so much to us all you'd think that AR would listen to us!

Magnolia Blossom- you & luv2cook are really good at that game! LOL

About Me
I've been married for 32 years, and live in Ohio. We have a daughter who is married and lives nearby. Our son graduated from college and moved to South Dakota. He has his own place but still goes to visit my sister and brother-in-law and have dinner with them occasionally. We have a black lab that gets to go duck hunting with dad, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels. We own a Mexican restaurant and are learning alot about the food industry. I love to eat, go camping, read, spend time with family and friends, watch movies, and drink wine; not necessarily in that order.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake - anything chocolate is fine with me. Seafood, chicken dishes and slow-cooker fare.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I enjoy cooking together with wine. We pop open a bottle of wine and get cooking. :-)
My cooking triumphs
Whenever I can put together a meal that gets many compliments and leaves the diners satisfied is a triumph in my book! I love to cook meals for family and friends.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married we had my grandparent's-in-law over for a pot roast dinner. The meat came out great, but the potatoes and carrots were still half raw. My husband's grandfather went to cut his fork into a carrot and it flew off his plate. He looked at me, winked, and said he loved his carrots that way!
