A Sad Day

As anyone who has read any of my blogs knows - I am an animal lover - especially of dogs.  I didn't learn that on my own - I have two parents that taught me how to love Man's Best Friend.  A few blogs back I wrote of my chocolate lab, Missy, and her littermate, Prince's 13th birthday celebration.  Prince belongs to my mom and dad.  Prince has been in failing health for a while now and Monday it was his time to cross over the Rainbow Bridge and join his old friends.  We all know the greatest gift that he could receive at this time was to be let go, but DANG! It hurts to be so unselfish!

Prince was a good dog; make that a GREAT dog.  He was loved by everyone who ever met him. And many, many people got the chance to meet him.  You see, Prince was a therapy dog.  He visited our local hospital and nursing home - giving a smile and a wag to everyone he met.  He gave them hope and brought joy to their lives, if even for just a moment.  Prince had a few titles after his name.  He earned the titles of Companion Dog, Therapy Dog International, and the Canine Good Citizen Certificate. He was a Delta Society Therapy Dog as well. He also was a professional model when he was just a young pup.  He shared that job with his twin sister, Missy, both of them making the cover of a pet product company's brochure.   But most of all he was a superb companion and loved my mom and dad.  We're all going to miss him.  A lot.

I am so sorry! I know exactly how hard it is to make that final decision. What a wonderful life he led, though. {{{Hugs}}} to the whole family.

Thank you BigShotsMom. He certainly lived a dog's life - it couldn't get any better than what he had!

So, so sorry to hear this. It is such a heart wrenching thing to go through. So glad he had such an impact on so many people- a long, fulfilling life, full of love. Big HUGS!

I am so sorry Mother Ann. It is so hard to lose them. They are here for such a short time. I wonder if that is why they fill our lives with so much joy from the day they arrive. Bless you all and I know that Prince is playing catch with our Cujo and Chili. Take care.

I am so sorry, I know how hard the decision is to make. Prince sounds like a fantastic pet and friend.
Feb. 22, 2012 6:28 pm
It is so sad when we pet lovers loose A little one. some non pet owners don't understand it why we cry when we lose a pet. For me and my wife It is like one of my children. I have five kids Pedro, Poncho, Ginger, Maria, And Consuela.

Letting go is the absolute toughest resposibility we have as partners with our pets. My sympathy to you and your parents.
Feb. 23, 2012 3:00 am
Mauigirl, you can bet if they're playing with a stick that Prince is there. But, his idea of a "stick" was more like a giant log. :)
Feb. 23, 2012 3:01 am
Loves2Cook, thank you. And, he was a great friend.
Feb. 23, 2012 3:02 am
KingSparta - I know what you mean. Some people I don't even bother to tell about my furry kids. They just don't get it. Pat each of your kids for me.
Feb. 23, 2012 3:03 am
Mike, you are so right. The training is nothing compared to that last decision; however, making the last decision is the absolute kindest thing we can do as humans for our pets when the time comes. Thank you.
Feb. 23, 2012 4:51 am
Ahh, I'm so sorry. It sounds like his life was the best it could be and he will be sorely missed by all of his humans.
Feb. 23, 2012 5:58 am
I am so sorry for your loss. Look at all the lives he touched in his short time on earth. Allowing him to go with dignity is indeed the ultimate gift of love. Blessings to you and your family.
Feb. 23, 2012 6:24 am
I hate it when we must let a dear one go. It just hurts so bad. And it never gets any easier. Hugs to you and your folks. I have the rainbow poem if you would like it.

Mother Ann, I am sorry to hear about Prince. I love dogs and it breaks my heart to lose such a special friend. My heart goes out to you.
Feb. 23, 2012 10:06 am
Well Cujo was a 15 lb. Shitzu who thought he was a big dog on campus and Chili was a 120 lb lab mix who thought she was a small lap dog. I know Prince is a in some great company :) Take care.
Feb. 23, 2012 1:28 pm
Mother Ann, sorry to hear the sad news... sending a wet lick from her furry friend Prue and sending XXOO to you and your parents ..... Prince will be missed greatly.Take care.

I am so sorry that you lost your dear Prince. I have experienced the joy that therapy dogs have to give and it is a wonderful healing thing. Price has left a great legacy for all to remember. He sounds like a beautiful loving pooch and I wish I had been lucky enough to know him.
Feb. 24, 2012 3:26 am
Thank you everyone for your kind comments. It is comforting to know there are so many dog lovers out there! And by now Prince has made friends with everyone of your departed friends!

It always breaks my heart to hear of someone losing their beloved pets. They are so dear to us. I'm so glad we have memories to hold onto...they forever stay in your heart. Sorry for your loss.
Feb. 25, 2012 5:20 pm
Sherri, thank you. What you say is so true. When we can remember the good times it puts a smile in our hearts.
Feb. 25, 2012 5:22 pm
Dog Fish Head - I meant to reply to your comment about the Rainbow Bridge Poem before and then didn't. I do have it somewhere tucked away, thank you.
Feb. 26, 2012 5:05 am
Oh, Ann, I'm so sorry to hear of Prince's passing. It is so hard. When I have been in similiar situations I take comfort in knowing my animals never knew hunger, or prolonged exposure, or fear, just love and comfort. And for what we give them, they give back thousand fold. And being a therapy dog, Prince gave back million fold. Working in hospitals, I can't tell you how much therapy dogs mean to the patients, residents and staff. A little normalcy in a strange and cold world. It always brightens my day to see and pet these animals. RIP Prince, and my condolences to you, your parents and family.
Feb. 26, 2012 5:33 am
They truly break our hearts..... It is a difficult, yet worthy, price to pay for all the love and enjoyment they give us. I am sorry for your loss but glad you had many years of enjoyment together. What a special friend he was to so many....
Feb. 26, 2012 5:45 am
Saveur - thank you so much. My parents have always said that their dogs not only helped out the patients, but many times the staff took comfort in a quick visit and "hug" as well.
Feb. 26, 2012 5:47 am
WFDM: Thank you. A friend of ours says "If our dogs lived as long as we did, we would only get to live one of them in our lifetime". The effort is well worth it - to have such a loyal, loving pet in our lives.
Feb. 28, 2012 6:59 am
He was blessed to have a family that loved him and didn't let him suffer. Sorry for your loss.
Feb. 28, 2012 10:01 am
So sorry for your loss, Im sure he had a wonderful life with you, that is the hardest decision to make. He sounds like a good friend to have. Take care
Feb. 28, 2012 1:14 pm
Ohh, darling, I know it's so hard to lose such a loved one - no matter how many legs they have! My little Normyn was taken from me November 1st, 2009 - I mourned him for almost two years! He was a perfect little Dachshund prince, taken so long before his time at barely two years old. I'm so sorry for your loss - and I'm so glad you were able to spend so many years with him! God bless you and your family!!
Feb. 28, 2012 2:37 pm
I couldn't read the whole blog. I retired from a vet after 22 years and I creid every time one of my babies was put down.. They are so precious.. I love them all
Feb. 28, 2012 2:45 pm
Ann, I'm sorry for the pain, but happy for Prince that he is relieved of it. You know I know how much it hurts. Prince leaves a wonderful legacy and has touched many lives, leaving many memories. Hugs to your Mom and Dad, and to you and everyone that misses him, blessings too!
Feb. 28, 2012 2:47 pm
BTW, Wyatt and Penny are enjoying their new friend!
Feb. 28, 2012 3:32 pm
Some pets come into our lives and quietly go . . . others leave pawprints on our hearts . . . and we are never the same. Such was Prince. I'm praying for you Mother Ann - and all those that are grieving the loss of a beautiful friend.
Feb. 28, 2012 3:33 pm
I'm so sorry for you and your family, Mother Ann. Dogs are such wonderful companions, always giving us unconditional love. And Labs have a special place in my heart. Of course, I am totally biased since I also have a chocolate Lab. He's 12 1/2 and I've had him since he was 8 weeks old. He's my joy. Prince sounds like he was a true treasure.

Everyone who has commented above - thank you for your kind words and thoughts. Prince was truly a Prince and I know he is up there having a blast with all his newfound friends! I'll bet they've already discussed how their "humans" are friends on AR! :)
Feb. 29, 2012 6:30 am
Prayers and hugs! Lucky, Maggie and Kellie all died in my arms as I sobbed at the vets office. They were all my children and we always remember. Prince has quite a group to play with in heaven! Kissing my current babies extra today!
Feb. 29, 2012 11:43 pm
I've never read your blog but this caught my attention. I come from where people understand the bonds we have with our pets. Very sorry for your loss and hope you find peace with knowing he is free from his health issues. It's been six years since the last one I had to let go of, and I so know what it feels like. Sammy is a cat, but at the Rainbow Bridge all the animals are friends, and they'll all be good company for Prince until you meet again.

(I hope you've gotten rid of the spam. Incredible how sick someone can be posting that junk on a thread like this!)

Luckynoodles, No doubt Prince and your furry children are all fast friends, "talking"about good times with their humans while on Earth.
Mar. 1, 2012 3:10 am
Erimess - Thanks for stopping in! Your Sammy has probably already made friends with Prince. :) And yes, every time I see spam on here I ban that user. Thanks!

About Me
I've been married for 32 years, and live in Ohio. We have a daughter who is married and lives nearby. Our son graduated from college and moved to South Dakota. He has his own place but still goes to visit my sister and brother-in-law and have dinner with them occasionally. We have a black lab that gets to go duck hunting with dad, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels. We own a Mexican restaurant and are learning alot about the food industry. I love to eat, go camping, read, spend time with family and friends, watch movies, and drink wine; not necessarily in that order.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake - anything chocolate is fine with me. Seafood, chicken dishes and slow-cooker fare.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I enjoy cooking together with wine. We pop open a bottle of wine and get cooking. :-)
My cooking triumphs
Whenever I can put together a meal that gets many compliments and leaves the diners satisfied is a triumph in my book! I love to cook meals for family and friends.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married we had my grandparent's-in-law over for a pot roast dinner. The meat came out great, but the potatoes and carrots were still half raw. My husband's grandfather went to cut his fork into a carrot and it flew off his plate. He looked at me, winked, and said he loved his carrots that way!
