I always wondered what they did out there in the swamp!

I've always wondered what my husband and son did all day out in the swamp when they go duck hunting. 

They get up in the wee hours of the night, long before daylight, dress in camo clothing, and load the truck with duck decoys.  The dog, currently our black lab Suzy, gets so excited to be going I just wonder:  What do they do out there?

They are sometimes gone until almost dark.  Sometimes they come home with a duck or two, but often they come home with nothing.  Those are the days there are plenty of stories of how they missed or how it just didn't feel right to take the shot.  There are always stories of the beaver they watch, or the deer that comes to drink along the water's edge. 

This picture of Suzy now tells me - I'm not the only one to wonder what they do all day out there!  I think she's just wondering why she got up to go this morning!!

Hi Mother Ann, I see Suzy is doing well. Apparently the men aren't working her too hard! She looks great. I hope you and your family had a great holiday,on to the next one. Is your daughter still contemplating having Christmas Eve? (if I remember correctly?) Take it easy : )

Hi Dragonfly22! Suzy is doing great - especially when this is all she's doing when she's out "working" LOL. Funny you asked about my daughter hosting Christmas Eve - I just finished talking with her. She's calling her Grandma tomorrow to offer to take it over. Her & her hubby moved last Friday from a basement apt. and are already all settled in with tree up!

iron maiden - priceless is right! Though, she has caused us much expense - she had ligament repair surgery in April. She was just released to 100% activity in October. She turned 2 in Oct. It was a long, hard road to her recovery but we did it! Thank you.

Any man can hunt ducks. Only real men dare to come home with nothing but soggy clothes and stories of just missing an otherwise perfect shot.

What we do for our pets!! Hunting, the picture says it all. Just to be in the great outdoors, relaxing in the sun!! I have a doodle who's life we revolve around. She walks around the house like a princess and we are her servants! So we just hop to it!!

Rozdodl: Isn't is amazing how quickly we are trained? In addition to Suzy we also have a "geriatric" chocolate lab, Missy who is 12. And 2 cats, 2 cockatiel and my son's iguana, Paulie. I even know when Paulie wants more than just his dinner - he'll crawl up on his highest perch, stretch his neck way out and close his eyes. That means he wants me to "pet" him. I can't believe I hop to it for an iguana!

Cute, I know my guys nap and do some bonding. Every time they come in from hunting, they seem to have an inside joke just between them-I love it! Guys need their testosterone levels tweaked once in awhile. I rarely go hunting anymore-too many hunters in the house. When I do, RN Grampa and I have a connection that is hard to explain-we just feel it.

What a great photo! Maybe it was the way I was brought up but I love love love labs in their camo suits. You can tell that she’s getting annoyed at them for not shooting more ducks

RNG, I have gone hunting with my hubby but I have never carried a gun. I love to shoot, but at targets only -I don't think I could kill something (it's the Disney in me!). When I've gone with him, though, I have enjoyed being outside and I do the picture taking. I love to hear hubby and son laughing about their "inside jokes", too.

Candice - you may be right! We have had so much fun with this picture. It has even inspired my daughter to start gathering up funny pics of all the family dogs and she's putting a calendar together for her grandparents (I hope I get one too!)

Haha...great picture! We have English pointers, and I'm the one who follows them around with the camera. Shots like this one only happen during the hunt. Love those hunting dogs, no matter the breed! Suzy should be richly rewarded for all her hard work out in the swamps.

Oh gosh, that is the cutest pic ever. Reminds me so much of our black lab Bella who we lost just last month, she was 14 years old and had hip dysplasia, arthritis and kidney disease. We finally felt she just was in too much pain. We miss her very badly, she was such a sweet dog.

Ann I love it and the pic of Suzy is beautiful. My baby is half lab and just the bestest guy in the world! My first husband was a huge duck hunter and I just never understood duck hunting. It seems the colder and wetter the weather is, the more psyched the guys get to get out in that duck blind! I went with my hub and fil one and ONLY one time. I had on so many layers of clothes that I couldn't scratch an itch! My nose was runny and snot was freezing, my fingers and toes were so frozen I thought I'd break them off if I dared bend them! I had to pee and couldn't even get out of my clothes! MISERY! However, I actually loved all hunting seasons, because the hubster would be gone for days on end, lol, and I loved that part!

Wohlibuli - sorry to hear about Bella. 14 is a good long life! We have an almost 12 yr.old that used to be the hunter and is now retired from it. She enjoys staying home with "Mom" now and sleeping on the couch.

Mimosa - that is funny. I've been out with my hubby - but only on the nice, sunny days. Of course there aren't any ducks flying, but it's fun to sit in the blind. I know what you mean, the nastier the weather the more psyched they get! But try and get them to go out and shovel the walk - it's too nasty! LOL

I'd have to say that the same thought came to my mind yesterday when I was duck hunting in 20 degree weather while it snowed and blowed. Why did I wake up so early (4am) to come out here and freeze? The answer came later that evening when I was eating a bowl of wild duck stew with dumplings...mmmmm.

earlfriend - I'm always thankful my husband and son will get up so early and sit out there and freeze so I can make up wild duck gumbo or my husband can make his awesome goose appys. He rolls bite-sized chunks of goose breast in cajun seasoning, wraps a piece of bacon around it and grills on the grill till done. Very tasty. And now that I've seen what Suzy does out there, I don't feel too bad for her - she's just chillin' and not working too hard. :-)

Missy - my husband posted it on the hunting site he helps manage and frequents a lot. It won him a DVD on there as it was so good. I think he plans on submitting it somewhere. We've had more fun with it than I've ever had with a picture before.

That is absolutely adorable :) Coming from a family of hunters (and got my own brood of hunters now too) - I could definitely see many of my family doing the same. Especially with the dogs that go with them! Although I don't think any of our dogs ever had that much class ;)

Suzy reminds me of my own family's labs, who all enjoy striking dynamic poses! I often regret NOT ever going duck-hunting when I was living in Tennessee....but I hear people go out here in California, so, I might try it out. What are some of your favourite things to cook when they bring home duck?

Charrlie - we love wild duck gumbo. That has become our new favorite. I've also started making jerky out of it. I got a dehydrator last winter and it's been fun. I make some crockpot meals with the geese and my hubby makes a yummy appy where he rolls the goose chunks in cajun seasoning, wraps bacon around it and grills till just done.

BellesAZ - I've always said we spend far more at the vet than we ever did at the human dr. office. If you could see Suzy right at this minute - there is none of that regal, serious look at all -she's on her back, all 4's up with a bone in her front paws, chewing away, tail wagging.

About Me
I've been married for 31 years, and live in Ohio. We have a daughter who is married and lives nearby. I am enjoying listening and watching her and her husband learn to cook new recipes. Our son recently graduated from college and moved to South Dakota. He just got his own place but still goes to visit my sister and brother-in-law and have dinner with them. We have a black lab that gets to go duck hunting with dad, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels, and an iguana (I'm the Iguana Mama until my son can come fetch his lizard from Ohio). We own a Mexican restaurant and are learning alot about the food industry. I love to eat, go camping, read, watch movies, and drink wine.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake - anything chocolate is fine with me. Seafood, chicken dishes and slow-cooker fare.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I enjoy cooking together with wine. We pop open a bottle of wine and get cooking. :-)
My cooking triumphs
Whenever I can put together a meal that gets many compliments and leaves the diners satisfied is a triumph in my book! I love to cook meals for family and friends.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married we had my grandparent's-in-law over for a pot roast dinner. The meat came out great, but the potatoes and carrots were still half raw. My husband's grandfather went to cut his fork into a carrot and it flew off his plate. He looked at me, winked, and said he loved his carrots that way!
