Sometimes simple dinners are the best!

Tonight is my last night of summer vacation!  I have to go back to work tomorrow - back to the grind - back to our "caught on fire" high school.  Two days before school let out in June the school I work in caught fire in the gym.  Only that part of the building was damaged, but it was severe.  School is planned to begin on time on August 24th, there are quite a few temporary modular units being moved in for the classrooms and cafeteria that are off-limits until they are repaired and re-built.  But, I work in the Guidance Office and tomorrow is our first day back.  We have a new principal this year, too.  I think it's going to be a very "topsy-turvy" beginning and I can only hope that things move smoothly the rest of the year.

My 21-year-old son will be home from college until August 22, and then we really get back to "normal" (whatever that is!) once he moves back to his dorm.  Hubby is going out of town tomorrow for work for the entire week.  I had originally planned to make a real, home-cooked Sunday dinner.  Then, my son left to go to the new girlfriend's house (at least we think she's moving into that position, and that thrills both me and hubby - she's not only beautiful, but very down-to-earth and sweet).   So, we decide to just have a simple, summer supper.  Grilled burgers, fresh local corn-on-the-cob, tomato-cuke-basil-mozzarella salad, cantaloupe, and Labrador Lagers (a great tasting brew made at Great Lakes Brewing Company, a local brewery).  We love that beer - though I have to confess, I think I mainly love it because we have 2 labs and I love the label and name!

We picked a ton of blackberries off of our bushes this afternoon and I had planned on making a cobbler.  But - that'll have to wait for another day.  I'm stuffed.  I plan to sit on the couch, play on the computer, and gear up to go back to school tomorrow!

Maybe a week before you are back into your work routine? I'll be thinking of you as I struggle with getting into my new routine- retirement! ;)

Michelle - I lied. Labrador Lager is made by Thirsty Dog - don't know what I was thinking. But, I also love Great Lakes Brewing Company, Dortmunder Gold is my favorite of theirs. :-) And, what a coincidence! My son attends Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea. We are close - nice to hear from you!!

My son is a criminal justice major - getting ready to start his senior year. He played baseball but has been plagued by major injuries requiring surgery so he isn't playing this year. It is a very small world indeed!!

About Me
I've been married for 32 years, and live in Ohio. We have a daughter who is married and lives nearby. Our son graduated from college and moved to South Dakota. He has his own place but still goes to visit my sister and brother-in-law and have dinner with them occasionally. We have a black lab that gets to go duck hunting with dad, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels. We own a Mexican restaurant and are learning alot about the food industry. I love to eat, go camping, read, spend time with family and friends, watch movies, and drink wine; not necessarily in that order.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake - anything chocolate is fine with me. Seafood, chicken dishes and slow-cooker fare.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I enjoy cooking together with wine. We pop open a bottle of wine and get cooking. :-)
My cooking triumphs
Whenever I can put together a meal that gets many compliments and leaves the diners satisfied is a triumph in my book! I love to cook meals for family and friends.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married we had my grandparent's-in-law over for a pot roast dinner. The meat came out great, but the potatoes and carrots were still half raw. My husband's grandfather went to cut his fork into a carrot and it flew off his plate. He looked at me, winked, and said he loved his carrots that way!
