Shoe and friends - so much alike

As I was sitting on my deck this morning sipping my coffee and plotting the game plan to get ready for tonight when friends are coming over, I realized how much alike our shoes and our friends are. Both are necessary for a comfortable, healthy life.
And as with our shoes, we have friends for every occasion.
Stop and think about it. Almost everyone has a pair of dress shoes. You know, the shoes you wear to church and when you get dressed up for special occasions. You love them, you look great in them, but they really aren't the most comfortable shoes. When
wearing them you just can't let go and be yourself. Some of our friends are like that. The ones we meet at church or work. When you're with them you have to be on your best behavior. These aren't our best friends. In fact some people may not even consider
these people actual friends, more like aquaintances.
Then you have your work-out shoes. Those good sturdy shoes you wear when working out. Most people have friends they participate in this activity with. They're the friends you talk about "healthy" things with and that's when your "practical" side shines through.
Again - these friends have a purpose and that purpose is to help you get fit or stay fit, whichever the case may be. I know I don't go out and get drunk, or eat like a fool with these friends - they would really frown on that type of behavior. A sensible
bag of carrot or celery sticks is more what you share with them.
The next pair of shoes I thought of are my favorite shoes, and perhaps the most important shoes of all. These shoes are my casual shoes. The comfortable loafers (or maybe in the summer my flip flops or sandals) that I put on when going out for the evening
- either to a movie or out for dinner or a drink, or maybe just a good ice cream. These shoes go to my children's sporting events, parties, camping trips, vacations - wherever I'm going to go and have fun. These are my oldest and dearest shoes. And these
kind of friends are my best friends of all. I know I can kick back, laugh, be myself and they won't judge me. We can say what we like and know this friend just "gets it". It doesn't matter if they show up unannounced at my door -they don't care what I look
like, they're stopping by for my company. These are the shoes, and the friends, I am with during the times that I have the most cherished memories of.
When I cleaned out my closet the other day I couldn't part with any of these old shoes. Old shoes and old friends - they're both important. How many of each do you have and are they still in the front of your closet or have they been shoved to the back?
If they are in the back of your closet - pull them out, dust them off and go make some new memories with old friends!
