I had a fantastic weekend - Mother's Day turned out perfect even though Mother Nature didn't cooperate. Our picnic became an indoor picnic. It didn't really spoil any of the fun or great food, though. My daughter brought her most delicious brownies with icing on them. Really no need to say that she took an empty pan home! My brother, who wanted to bring something but doesn't cook, supplied the chips. My sister brought pasta salad and my niece made cupcakes. It was nice to have everyone bring something - less work for me.
My daughter and son-in-law brought their 10 month old cocker spaniel with them. Maggie is adorable! She is a buff-colored spaniel that is always smiling. She thinks she's a lab - all of her "cousins" are labs so she watches and learns from them. Missy, our 11-1/2 year old chocolate lab "puts up" with her, but I think she is secretly pleased that Maggie follows her around and chews on her ears. Normally Maggie and Suzy (our 18-month old black lab) play non-stop. But since Suzy had her ligament repair surgery, she had to stay crated in our bedroom.
Mother's Day is also when we celebrate my mother's birthday as her birthday is May 11th. I made her an angel food cake with a strawberry/cream cheese filling and then iced it with whipping cream - her favorite cake of all time.
This year it was a real celebration - my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer this past Fall. She completed her radiation treatments and has had her follow-up doctor visit. She was declared fine and required no further treatment. She just has to go for "check-ups" to be sure it doesn't come back. She is feeling fine and is looking forward to playing in her garden this summer.
Tomorrow it's back to work. My husband has to go out of town for business, but I won't be lonely - my son is home for the summer. Tomorrow night we'll have leftover picnic food and watch a movie.
