What's in a name?

When I first started "lurking" around on AR, I posted a thread asking how people came up with their names on here.  There were some interesting responses, so I thought I'd post a blog on the same subject to see what people have to say.  It might be fun to learn this about each other.

My story:  When my kids were young and would do something that was really out of line, they knew they were in trouble when I would use the middle name.  If they heard me shout out "Kristal Lea!!" or "Stephen Robert!!!!!" they knew they were in trouble.  The latter was shouted out waaaayyy more than the former, I might add.  Anyways - my daughter was about 7 or 8 when one day I said a cuss word and I hear her say "Mother Ann!" - Mother being my first name to her, and Ann is my middle name.  It stuck and to this day she'll admonish me with "Mother Ann!" anytime I say something, usually either a cuss word or if I'm annoying or embarrassing her.

When I was ready to join up on AR, that is the name that came naturally to me; so here I am!  Please feel free to add how you got your call-name.  To make it even more fun - add a few random facts about yourself that others would use to describe you.

Here's my random facts:  I love anything chocolate;  I collect lighthouses;  I love Stephen King books; my children and animals are my passion;  I do not worry about things - especially those things I have no control over.

Looking forward to learning more about my AR friends, and maybe make a few new ones!

How did I get my name? My GK's have more grandparents than they know what to do with, 5 generations on one side of the family and we were running out of names they should call us. The "other" side of the family were from northern states and my SIL referred to me one day as the "SouthernGma" and it stuck. So now, I'm G'ma to the babes. I'm a very patriotic individual and the kids think G'ma is silly when she cries at a parade when the Honor Guard marches by. But I still get hugs, so I'm okay with that. I have phones all over my house but not one really nearby when it rings and I'm up to my nose in dish soap or bread making. So annoying. I worry about everything so I'll do that for you, too. I get frustrated when I have not spent my time well during the day. I lay in bed at night doing the coulda, shoulda stuff; get up the next day and try to do better. Silly G'ma!

That is so cute that she called you Mother Ann! I love it! Well, my name is Cyndi, and since I have 9 cats, cat lady seemed appropriate :) I love gardening, love my cats, they are my life (they are my children). I also am a wine fanatic, reds being my favorite. I love animals very much, I belong to several organizations against cruelty to animals. Been collecting Fenton glass for a few years now, I really enjoy that. Pasta is my favorite food, I should probably enter a pasta eating contest, I would win for sure. Obviously, I love to cook & bake, it's like therapy for me...LOL :)

Happy Monday Mother Ann! I'm just tootin' my own horn when it comes to my profile name (one good cowgirl). We live on a cattle ranch where my husband is the hand. Random Facts: I'm pretty laid back usually, stuff doesn't faze me. I collect turtles and oriental art. I hate to dust, I'm not the best housekeeper. I'm a home body and have very few 'real' friends offline (unlike my hubby who has a gazzillion friends). I used to think I wanted to be a surrogate before I had my daughter and got my tubes tied.

Mar. 29, 2010 6:22 am
It's nice to meet you guys! I love hearing the random facts, too - some very interesting things going on in your lives!! Cyndi - I also love wine. My husband & I always look up wineries nearby the places we travel to. In fact, next Monday we are making a "wine run" to one of our favorite wineries to stock up. G'Ma - I have gotten more patriotic and sentimental as I have gotten older. I, too, find myself getting choked up at parades and such. And, cowgirl, I also hate to dust. I still do it half-a** as my mother always said I did. :-D

When I started frequenting recipe sites I needed a user name. Since these were cooking sites, I looked for a cooking name. Hot Cocoa came to mind. I used to have a brown doberman whose name was Coco, then I discovered that I have a son in law whose I formally didn't know whose nickname is Coco. So it was a natural. I am a 62 year old, second grade school teacher who hopes to retire soon. I love watching old movies, documentaries, animal movies, etc., on our 52" screen, I have a Great Dane which gives me much pleasure, and I spend the nice warm So. Cal. weather outside in my yard.

Mar. 29, 2010 6:28 am
Hi Mother Ann...my name came about because I like the Eagles (no, I'm not wiccan, it's been asked) years ago when I was playing with a band, the guys got to calling me witchywoman when I was all dressed up in black leather and so forth, so it sort of stuck. Like Cyndi, I collect Fenton and antique dishes, moose and cabin decor, and snowmen. I read sci-fi/fantasy books like a fiend, and I have super long curly red hair just about down to my waist, I have 3 tattoos and I have my nose pierced.

Mar. 29, 2010 6:32 am
Hot Coco - my brother has 2 great danes! My labs love to play with them - they can run right underneather their bellies!

Mar. 29, 2010 6:34 am
WW - I have to ask this - please don't be offended, or get grossed out. But - I've always wondered this about pierced noses: When you need to blow your nose, does the earring (nose ring) get in the way?? I see kids at the school with a little diamond stud or whatever and I always wonder that, but haven't asked them the question outright. I always loved the Eagles' music - WitchyWoman being one of my favs!! Though, Bob Seger wins out as #1 in my book. :-D

Hi Mother Ann! My name is Christine M because...well, my name is Christine M! ;) Never came up with a suitable nickname, I guess, although I would get the "Christine Patricia!" from my mom if I was in trouble... Patricia comes from my dad's name, although his name isn't really Pat or Patrick, everyone just calls him that. He's 85 years old and just this past year I finally heard the story on how he got his nickname - He had an Uncle that always called him "Johnny Banana" when he was a kid, and one day my Grandmother yelled at him "Don't call him that!" so he said "Ok...I'll call him Pat" And it stuck! Even recently my dad's name was in the newspaper and they referred to him as Patrick....not Leroy! ;) Anyway, I collect pink depression glass, Watt pottery and pewter pencil sharpeners, plus whatever else catches my eye...I love to read, especially mysteries, and I'm starting to take photography a little more seriously, although it will always be justa hobby, never a job. Nice to meet you! :)

Mar. 29, 2010 6:40 am
my name is really simple...my last name is smith and in high school they called me smitty...told ya...quite simple and boring...hehe

Mar. 29, 2010 6:44 am
Yes, Mother Ann, Danes are fun. The characters Marmaduke, Skoobydoo and Astro are so typical of "real" Danes. They can walk right up to the table and eat off of your plate.

Mar. 29, 2010 6:45 am
Nice to meet you, too! Christine - your dad's story reminded me of a school friend I had. Everyone called her Chippy - and I mean everyone. I never knew her real name for years. I think she still goes by Chippy, though I also never knew why we called her Chippy. :-) Smitty - I love your dog picture.

My favorite cooking magazine, now defunct :( combined with my street address. Maybe time to update to my new favorite cooking magazine, saveur631! Hmm...has a nice ring to it!

Mar. 29, 2010 6:50 am
LOL! No, Ann, I wear a nose bone. It's like a stud, but with a post only long enough to go through the cartilidge and a small ball that sits on the inside of my nose, it's not like a regular earring...LOL! I've had it in so many years that I don't even remember it's there half the time until I look down and see the sapphire.

Mar. 29, 2010 6:52 am
Thanks for the info WW!! I've always wondered about that.... Learned something new today.. hee!hee!

Mar. 29, 2010 6:53 am
I love all of your stories! Stephen King – I sat across from him in small hotel small bar and he spooked me out as he kept looking at me (must have been the frog on my head HA). Then in Boston…saw him again. My friends teased me that my character would turn up in one of his books LOL. I like his books but those two encounters truly spooked me. I love all things chocolate also and go with your strategy – you cannot control what you have no power over so don’t sweat it.! Life is way too short. My name…Cajun Girl…just a name to represent my heritage.

Mar. 29, 2010 6:55 am
I have been using my "name" for a long time. My initials are JAM so I wanted to come up with a moniker for that so jam is sweet- there you have it! Love Stephen King books too! Have you read his latest The Dome? About as long and as good as The Stand, although I liked The Stand better.

Mar. 29, 2010 6:57 am
To have met Stephen King! How cool! My son actually was named after him, not because I love his books, but because we couldn't agree on a name for our son. It was time to leave the hospital and we couldn't agree on a name. My hubby was determined he'd be named after him. I reasoned we hadn't given our daughter any part of my name, so no go for the son. Finally, I looked down at the book I was reading (A Stephen King novel of course) and said "I always liked the name Stephen, how about that?" We agreed, thus our son was named! His middle name is my dad's name.

Hi all, well in one way I'm boring because my name is Phil and I live in Switzerland - but it's also to help a pair of nieces sort out which Uncle phil they're talking about. Not sure if the rest is intersting or not, but I have worked in 16 different countries round the world and made my home in 5 of them. I met my wife Diana on Christmas Day 1999, at a mutual friend's home for Xmas Dinner. So we were eaqch other's Christmas Presents. It took 2 days to get the wrappings off. The other story form that night will have to appear in my Blog 'cos it's too long for here. I am also seriously into wine.

Mar. 29, 2010 6:59 am
Sweetjam -I haven't read the Dome yet, though it's on my list of things to do this week while I'm on spring break. I loved the Stand. But the Shining is my all-time favorite. Whenever I hear the Eagles' song "Hotel California", I think of The Shining...

Mar. 29, 2010 7:00 am
Wow Phil - you sure have been around!

Mar. 29, 2010 7:01 am
Oh, and the only thing I collect are Santas for my tree. I don't like them all- they have to "speak" to me, but I have almost an entire 8ft tree of them. I also love vintage christmas ornaments and have a small tree of those.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:03 am
Whenever we travel somewhere, we pick up an ornament from that place. After 28 years of marriage, our tree is almost solely ornaments from places we have visited. Most of them are "beach" oriented as we love the beach.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:08 am
Good name -Stephen :-) Phil you live in a beautiful country! Sweetjam - I collect Santas also.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:08 am
Marie is not my name but that of a dear friend that has passed. While our DH were busy climbing both mountains and corporate ladders we were there for each other. The C. is because cooking was her passion. She is missed dearly by so many.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:10 am
Marie - what a wonderful tribute to a great friend!

I had been on AR for ages before I actually created a profile back in 06 and I used the name Gemmyt216 which I had used on this very old DOS computer game I played with friends way back in the early 90's. Anyway, I changed my name on here to my real first name when I joined Facebook and was hooking up with other AR exchange people over there, easier to find and be found. Plus I guess I'm just not that original. Oh, my name is pronounced GINA not Jenna, btw. Randomness: I LOVE seafood and the ocean and am happiest when I am at, near, in or by the water. I collect angels and anything with red hearts and my office looks like St. Valentine threw up in it because I have 3 walls covered with hearts (the fourth wall has ocean pictures on it). I'm 7 floors up at work and my windows look out over the Missouri River which is about as close to the ocean as one gets in Iowa. Sigh.....

Mar. 29, 2010 7:15 am
Seafood is one of my favs, just after chocolate!! What a beautiful view you have from your window! I work in a Guidance Office in a high school and have no outside windows, but am surrounded by glass, so I work in a fishbowl. My view is hundreds of teenagers....

Mar. 29, 2010 7:19 am
My nme is Rebecca so that is the R and for first 25 years of my life I HATED my last name. I was picked on because of it so when my hubby and I were married I couldn't wait to show it off. We were married in 2001. It was tough going through life with the moniker of R Cox.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:22 am
I could see why you were happy in getting a name change. :-D

Mar. 29, 2010 7:33 am
Mine's too boring. It's my name. :-) I like it as a name, but it's constantly mispronounced and misspelled and I'm called Lynne or Lynn or Linda more than anything. Random facts: Unlike you, I don't care for chocolate at all, I love and adore my husband and kids and job. I recently was diagnosed as a Type II diabetic and have lost a lot of weight to try to become healthy again. I love, love, love cooking and trying new recipes.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:34 am
Mine is obvious! I love football and I love my Broncos (no matter how bad they play!). :) I also wanted a name on here where I was "me" and not someone's wife or mother. Not that I don't love those titles, but AR is for me.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:59 am
Guess I didn't do any random facts. Well, I don't really like desserts much. I've never had a sweet tooth. Chocolate is good, but I rarely crave it and I don't like chocolate cake at all. I tend to speak my mind, I've never had a lot of friends but the few I do have I trust completely and I would do anything for them. I'm originally from Texas and I have four older brothers. I'm the youngest and only girl. I don't like lying and I don't care for whiny people. And, I try to find something to laugh out loud about every day ~ I think laughter makes life much better.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:59 am
Oooh I like questions like these, fun fun! It's neat to learn everyone's reasons, thanks for giving me something interesting to read while having my coffee this morning. I don't think I can take "Go Train Go" anymore today and it's not even noon yet, lol. I took on the name LouisvilleHugger because I am from the home of the Louisville Slugger. And I even dig baseball! The "Hugger" part comes from my past when I used to travel around the states following the remaining members of the Grateful Dead. I've been known to hug a tree or two;)

Well for openers, my name is Anne and the first 3 letters of my last name are von. Years ago, someone noticed that the first initial A and the first part of my last name spelled Avon. Friends started calling me Avon lady. Like so many others, I used this site for years before I created a profile and when I did, PattyCakes was then known as Avon Lady so, I couldn't very well be that too. I dropped the lady part and kept the Avon. I'm a divorced mom of 4 kids. 1 still at home. We are a house full of "girl jocks" here. Sports is a passion as much as cooking. I really don't participate but I'm the #1 fan of all time and attend everything my kids do, or watch any kind of sporting event on TV if there isn't something to go to. I love to grow my own veggie garden and can my own sauces and salsas. I'm also a knitter.

Mar. 29, 2010 8:28 am
Good morning Anne! I figured you sold Avon; ha!ha! Hope your daughter is doing well. My son's game was cancelled yesterday, but he's supposed to play today, as long as the weather holds out. Keep your fingers crossed!

Mar. 29, 2010 8:42 am
My name came about because I bake all the time, it helps me when I'm stressed and I eat some and give some away. My DH used to take things into work and instead of explaining that yes again I had baked a ton he'd just say "my wife Luvs 2 Bake". I've thought about changing it once I was on the RE as there already is a Luv2Bake and recently a Loves2Bake but haven't come up with anything that feels right yet and then I'd have to put my new name with formerly Luvs2Bake so needless to say I haven't done anything yet. I'm addicted to chocolate, read any kind of books non stop (except unfortunately 5 days a week when I have to go to work),am extremely proud of my DH and my three DD and wish they'd live closer or I could move closer. Have a huge cookbook collection and I'm trying real, real hard not to add to it. Thanks for posting this. It was so much fun to read what everyone wrote.

Mar. 29, 2010 8:50 am
Mother Ann: What an adorable story about the origin of your nickname! My husband and I ride motorcycles. As a family activity, we also ride dirt bikes with our three kids (17, 16 and 12). I am a powerplant operator. With my 50-mile commute and 12-hour rotating shifts, work consumes lots and lots of time. Despite the crazy hours, I've got the best job on the planet. It's important to me to keep my family well-fed, so I make quite an effort to help prepare meals even though I might not be home. I feel slightly less guilt when I know they're not eating frozen pizza for dinner for seven consecutive nightshifts.

Mar. 29, 2010 8:50 am
One of the reasons I joined AR was to cut back on the cookbook purchases! I have about 200 of them, but I have made at least one thing out of each one, more than that out of most.

Mar. 29, 2010 8:54 am
Bikerfamily, you reminded me of a story about dirtbikes! My son was intrigued by dirtbikes, motorcycles, really anything that goes fast and makes a lot of noise. One day we had the opportunity to purchase a small dirtbike for him at a good price. He was about 11 at the time. So, he is riding it around the yard, in the woods, etc. and dares me to give it a go. I am NOT a dirtbiker/motorcycle rider at all, but I can't refuse a dare. So, on it I go. I make a trip around the yard and suddenly realize I forgot how to stop the darn thing. I yell as I go by hubby & son -what do I do? Next trip around, my hubby jumps out in front of me to tell me how to stop. But, I thought I was going to hit him, so I swerve, the thing revs up and I do a perfect wheelie! Only to wreck the bike on a tree. The bike was fine, and so was I - to this day I think I hold the record in the family for the most perfect wheelie!! :-D

Mar. 29, 2010 9:08 am
Mine is pretty simple as that is what the kids say to me right after HELLO when they walk in the door from school. Never mind we have a weekly menu posted on the fridge THEY helped put together. Still... they just gotta ask! LOL - I love it! Was either that or Crazy Lady as the hubs (ever so lovingly of course! Well most days....) calls me! ;)

Mar. 29, 2010 9:14 am
Forgot the random facts - well I guess you can add forgetful to my fact list. Ummmm.... ok, HATE beer - Love Mikes hard lemonade drinks, collect antiques and have 3 china closets, addicted to stained glass, am part Lenapay Indian, my hair is about 30 inches long, am totally in love with my hubs and kids - can do sign language and I am a kick @ss seamstress with my own contract sewing business, and I love wasabi - will that do? LOL

Mar. 29, 2010 10:07 am
Hey Mother Ann, I chose dragonfly22 because I have a dragonfly tattoo to represent my son and 22 because that has always been my number for sports and also my birthday is Nov.22nd. Some random things about me are I'm a stay at home mom of 3 busy kids!! My first child is my boxer Prue who ya see when I post things. I have yet to write a blog because I'm clueless on what to write. I love meeting new people but I am extremely shy. I love watching my oldest son play baseball ! And I like to read murder mysteries , I'm on a J.D. Robb kick now. How did your son do this past weekend? Hope al went well !

Mar. 29, 2010 10:11 am
Hey Dragonfly! #22 has always been the go-to number in our family! Thanks for asking about my son. Game was cancelled due to weather. Had one today, but he just called. It's off as well. But, Wed. is the make-up day for today's game and the weather forecast is looking good for it! :-D Prue is adorable BTW!!

Mar. 29, 2010 10:22 am
Shortly after my husband and I bought our house, I announced I was adopting a greyhound. We ended up being adopted by a retired racer named Blazin' Banshe. The adoption group shortened his name to Banshe. Since he was my first "child" I am and always will be Banshez Mom. Due to time constraints at work, I don't get on AR as often as before, but I pop in to check the blogs and scan the exchange for new recipes.

Mar. 29, 2010 11:48 am
I use my name on this site. I thought, perhaps, that the name I use on other sites might not muster the censorship here. Now, I think I can get away with people knowing that my usual screen name is; PITA2wife. It comes from my wife's attitude toward me and it's Pain In The A- - to her. Hense, PITA2wife.

Mine is not too hard to figure out..lol Both of my daughters were in marching band in HS (oldest still marches in college) so hence the name 'bandmom' and well Becky is my name. I loved marching season and attended all football games and marching competitions for the six years they were in HS (combined). I don't really collect anything, but, I do love to cook and am thinking about starting a small garden this spring/summer. I love my boyfriend of 3 years and even though I have always loved sports, I am more of a baseball fan than I ever was. His oldest pitches in college, his middle son is in school but he umpires for travel baseball and he is now the coach for his daughter's travel softball team. I have two cats, Tiger (the one in my avatar) and Lily. They are both rescued strays.

Mar. 29, 2010 12:01 pm
Hey Mike - I think your other name would be great on here! I love the meaning of it... Becky - I know where you'll be from now until the end of summer - and your Tiger sort of looks like my Bozwell. I have Bozwell and a gray cat named Oscar in addition to my 2 labs in my avatar and 2 cockatiel and an iguana I take care of for my son while he's away. Can you tell I love animals??

I also have a quaker parrot named Nemo. I had a lab/chow mix named Cheyenne when I was married but she used to get out of the fenced yard during the day and go swimming in the surrounding lakes and one day she just didn't come home :(

Like some others there's nothing original to my choice. It's my name!I'm not terribly creative. I collect vases. I didn't get a driver's license until I was almost 40. And even now at the age of 60 something I am not a big fan of driving!

Mar. 29, 2010 2:24 pm
Great blog. I've had so much fun reading it. As you can guess my name is Maggie, but when friends want my attention they always yell yo mags and that's also my tag name with The American Legion Riders. That's the motorcycle group I belong to. We do alot for veterans. Random: Shoelaces make my blood run cold. I collect little shoes. I don't own or ever wear socks, they make my blood run cold too. I have 5 cats,( does that make me a cat lady too.) Love my 2 children. I also collect egg cups and acorns. Thanks Mag

Hi Mother Ann..... Since my real name is Priscilla my friends and family nicknamed me Silla, the smiles part comes from the fact that i try to be upbeat, postive and happy. Im a mom of two school age kiddies. I have grown to love cooking i didnt care for it when i was younger, love coffee, and i read all kinds of magazines, i gave up drinking years ago. I work but part time at a newspaper it allows me time to spend with the kids my oldest just started middle school this year and started sports she played basketball and just started track so ofcourse i attend all of her games, the youngest just started school this year so i guess time will tell what his interests will be right now they are superheros and videogames.

Fishtown is part of Leland Michigan followed by the zip code. I spent all of my childhood summers in Leland staying at my grandparents and seeing my father. It was a magically place in the 50's and 60's. You can see daily pictures by going to www.lelandreport.com. And Leland is one of my favorite places, even though I haven't been there in over 20 years....Ann

hey ya- this is my first ever comment so scuse me if it rambles im just learning to get on my feet in cyber space- so as i begin i wish to emphasise my name is victoria and am a Female! yet for reasons linked to an embaressing dance and song created as a distraction of how everyone seemed to be cooler than me- well if you ever heard the song you would understand why this was so. so for my profile name i opted for a name that led to no confusion of my gender as it is less than flattering to have my family and friends call me ALFRED (what was my ten year old self thinking?)in public. as Alfred is more commonly a name for middle aged men situations become a little awkward. so that is why i opted for a name that alluded to a young woman who is much to cool for a name that creates question marks when gender and name come to cross. writing that created a weird kind of exciting rush for my internet self, thanks x

Well since I live in Magnolia, IL, (central Illinois) I thought I'd use Magnolia Blossom and pretend I'm a southern belle. When I get the southern drawl down right, I'll let y'all know.

Mar. 29, 2010 7:35 pm
Hello Mother Ann. I love your name, especially now that we have learned the fun fact behind it. I have been a member since 2001 and I don't know why I chose my name, except that I thought I would advertise the great state of Minnesota. I only found the RE this past December and boy have I logged the hours on since and collected many delicious new recipes. Random facts: I am kind of shy. I am happily married to my great husband. I work full-time as an administrative assistant at a clinic (17 years). I have one daughter who went away to college this fall (thus the extra time spent on AR). I can't forget to mention our delightful dog, Muffin. She is a shih tzu-poodle mix who is 9 YO.

Elle
Mar. 29, 2010 8:04 pm
Mine is easy. My name is Eleanor. I am "El" to coworkers, but figured it would be confusing, so I spelled it Elle. I used "L" in college but the coworkers reign and their spelling has won. DH lives 400 miles north while I wait for DD to move out (she's transferring from a local college to another one this year) and put the house up for sale-probably in June. I really do very little except work, cook, do housework...did I mention work? And play on Allrecipes, of course.

Mar. 29, 2010 8:35 pm
I don't normally respond but I enjoyed reading this, so I thought I would. My name is Eleanor, but my friends back in Louisiana call me Ellie. My husband's first initial is J and my son's is B, but I typed them in backwards and there they stay. : ) Random facts: I've been happily married for eleven years. My son has autism. I am studying to get my sociology degree and I am never without a book or my Kindle. I have two dogs who think they are human. I am pretty quiet and shy, but working on that. It's nice to meet you.

Lemrac is actually my named spelled backward. Carmel is pronounced like the candy, not the city. I also have 2 Labs, one chocolate and one black. I love to read, camp, and drink Red Wine. I love to do Arts and Crafts. I love to cook, but hate to follow recipes. I tend to just improvise, and if the dish doesn't turn out, I just rename it. Its interesting to hear how everyone got their name.

BRENDA
Mar. 30, 2010 5:01 am
Good Morning - Another obvious one, BRENDA...and I'm not shouting. My accounting program is in ALL CAPS and I always forget to turn it off:). I live in MA on the South Shore. My DH and I are have 5 children between us and all are on their own (except Willy our Cairn and Toby our Wheaton mix). I just got "bread fever" and cannot stop trying new ones. It's fun to get a peek behing the monikers.

Mar. 30, 2010 5:07 am
Wow! It's great to meet all you guys and hear your random facts and how you came up with your names! It's good to see some "new" people posting that don't normally do that. I like to meet new people. I have noticed that many folks who love to cook also have pets. That got me thinking about the people I know in "real" life - those who don't cook, tend to not have any pets! Hmmm.... wonder if there's a connection there??

jennkl
Mar. 30, 2010 5:55 am
When I was first joined the site I was not yet married and chose the name because my name is Jennelle so I took the first four letters of that and the first two letters of my last name. Now that I'm married it still fits, my middle initial is "K" and my last name starts with an "L". Random Facts- I have two dogs a yellow Lab named Sammie and a Basenji mix that we rescued named Bailey. I love "wine weekends" where we chose an area that is heavily populated with wineries and visit each one during the weekend. We also have a huge garden and for the first time are growing brussel sprouts something I've never ate!

Mar. 30, 2010 6:00 am
Jennkl - I too, love to go to wineries. And, I just ate brussels sprouts for the first time a few weeks ago and loved them! We've roasted them, and grilled them, brushing olive oil, garlic and balsamic vinegar on them. In fact we're having them tonight. Good luck with them!

Mar. 30, 2010 6:04 am
Mother Ann, I thought you were maybe living in an abbey or something.;o) Okay. The deal with my name is that when I taught 4 year olds, I overheard a boy enthusiastically tell a girl, "Hey! I know! Let's play 'huzzy and wife'!" Well, I started calling DH "Huzzy" at that point, to which he countered "Okay, Hezzy." [Doing this in public has mortified all three of our children at one time or another.] So, thinking of cooking, I decided I could easily fit the bill of being hesitant...Hezzy_tant...Random things: met DH at church camp where we both worked on staff...he was pushing a mop and so looked like he had potential; I once had a rural Avon route that Google maps would have a hard time finding and which may have had more canines than represented in this blog response; have spent over half my adult life in Japan, but will be leaving at year's end...somewhat concerned about reverse culture shock; like chocolate; am shy, except not so much on here (?) ...prefer savory to sweet.

Mar. 30, 2010 6:13 am
Hezzy - I love your story! I wrote a blog about how I met my husband - he's my high school sweetheart and we met at an amusement park we both worked at.

Mar. 30, 2010 6:18 am
Hello all! What a wonderful way to meet everyone- Thank you Mother Ann! I don't usually post either, just leave ratings for the wonderful recipes we try. I changed my AR name last year from TripleJ28 (my initials + a favoite number) to SweetBasil because I wanted a cooking name. Basil is my favorite herb -I grow a lot and use it in everything I possibly can. And I am pretty sweet-lol! Random facts~ We are retired So. Californian transplants living in Central Texas out in the country and loving it. Both DH & I love to cook, and have been trying to find healthier ways since the first of the year. It can be a challenge!! I'm a confirmed fabriholic & sew constantly- I make rag quilts and other baby items which I sell on ebay and at a consignment store. I have an intimate friendship with both my lawn tractor whom I have named Gertie and my sewing machine- Betsy. We have 3 sons, all still in California, and 2 grandsons who I miss so much!! I love to watch both baseball & football on tv.

Mar. 30, 2010 6:19 am
Hello MotherAnn! I'm *tink*, aka msntnkrbll, which is my email address turned around a bit, I'm tnkrbll AT msn.com! My alter ego is Tinker Bell because she sprinkles the pixie dust and makes people fly...and she also has a bit of an attitude...or "Tink-a-tude", if you please! I'm at AR enjoying blogs and making new friends and finding new recipes for my new healthy lifestyle. I've only got 108 days to get in shape....I'm going to °o° DISNEYLAND °o° !!!!! I love crab, shrimp and lobster and hate anything with cheese...

Mar. 30, 2010 6:21 am
Oh, and the tattoo....yes, it IS Sleeping Beauty Castle, it's REAL, and it's SPECTACULAR!

Mar. 30, 2010 6:24 am
I was just going to ask you about the tattoo! Cool!

Mar. 30, 2010 7:00 am
My name came about because when I was little and was asked what my name was I would point at myself and say Me Me...

Mar. 30, 2010 7:50 am
My name is Autumn and I lived in Texas when I set up my first email account hence the name that I have never changed. I am married and live in a pecan grove where my husband works. I work part time, and am planting a garden this year.

Mar. 30, 2010 7:50 am
DH was driving home from work one day-heard the song "Redneck Woman" by Gretchen Wilson-he said that was me and it is. Since I became a gramma before setting up account, I figured gramma would suit me better.

Mar. 30, 2010 8:17 am
I got the name BreadExpert one day while shopping in a local grocery store. I was in the bread aisle when an older gentleman approached me. He was holding a loaf of wheat in one hand and a loaf of white in the other. He looked me up and down while gesturing with his bread and asked "You look like a Bread Expert, which of these would you buy?". Ok, at this point in the story I will share that I am a big girl. The red beans and rice didn't miss me for sure! I do love my carbs!! So, after digesting his comment, I told him to buy the wheat and then quickly made my exit. I was kinda hurt by it at first but now I am completely okay. I like the nickname. I shared the story with all my family and friends. They sometimes jokingly call me BreadExpert!

Mar. 30, 2010 8:52 am
I love seeing all the stories about how people chose their name! Well mine is a nickname from a friend's DH (and several other people) who couldn't pronounce my real name (Dacia pronounced Day-see-au). He improvised and came up with Daisy. The K is the first letter of my last name. Random facts: I collect Longaberger baskets and "retro" dishes. I love to bake and cook but time doesn't allow for a lot of either lately. I've had my son in the kitchen "helping" since he was a toddler and he still loves it except now he wants to make the entire recipe all by himself... "I can do it mom." I work full time and go to school. I met my DH while dragging "Main Street" about 18 years ago. I love to scrapbook about life as it happens (even if it takes me 5 years to get it down in print lol).

Mar. 30, 2010 8:53 am
Oh I almost forgot... the pup in the photo is our newest addition Molly, a golden retriever

Mar. 30, 2010 9:09 am
Molly is adorable! Our first two dogs were Golden Retrievers. I loved them - they had such personality! My labs are right up there, though.

Mar. 30, 2010 10:12 am
What a fun blog! I love the stories behind the names! Unfortunately I am one of the boring ones who doesn't contribute here. Just my name and my b-day. As far as my "fun facts"...I have a wonderful husband and an adorable baby. I am the youngest of 7 children (6 girls 1 boy). My sisters are my best friends. Lastly, I live in Connecticut, but I am just DYING to get back to Iowa. July of 2011 my wish will be granted! Thanks for a fun blog.

Mar. 30, 2010 10:21 am
If that's your baby in the pic - you are right - Very Adorable!! 7/11 will be here before you know it.

Mar. 30, 2010 10:42 am
I'm always eager to learn more about people, whether on the computer or not. My screen name comes from my husband. He calls me Lois, although that is NOT my real name. Many of our friends DO think that Lois is my name and I will answer to it. The 1426 comes from our kids' birthdays.

Mar. 30, 2010 10:57 am
Fun reading everyones stories. My real name is Sherry and growing up my nickname became sharebear. A few random facts: I have 3 beautiful children who are 5,2&1 year old. I am a project coordinator for a manufacting company. I am also going to school.

Mar. 30, 2010 12:06 pm
I've so enjoyed reading this blog and all the wonderful stories. My name was given to me by my office mates. We have a Wizard of Oz theme. Everyone is a character - we even have the appropriate costumes hanging on the wall outside of our cubes. When I joined the team, I was given a choice to be a munchkin or Dorothy. Well, OBVIOUSLY Dorothy was TOO much pressure! How could I fill those ruby red slippers? So, I chose to be a munchkin. It didn't have anything to do with the fact that I am a short 5'1/2" female. The executive part came from the cute little sign that one of my co-workers gave me for Christmas my first year on the team. I liked it and its kind of stuck. I love to cook. My hubby and I could spend hours in the kitchen cooking together. Also, he's a fabulous cook on an open fire. He can literally cook anything out "on the range" over a great big fire pit. His peach cobbler is to die for yummy. My given name is Jennifer and my husband is Ricky. we have three wonderful children Chrissy 21, Taylor 16, and Jacob 7. My son will eat anything - loves Brussels sprouts! The girls are pretty picky but they've learned they must eat some of it - they pick out everything they don't like, tomatoes, mushrooms, pine nuts, whatever. Its OK with us as long as they attempt to eat it.

Mar. 30, 2010 12:11 pm
Munchkin - My daughter, Kristi, would love to work at your place! She loves the Wizard of Oz. When she was 4 (she's almost 25 now) we took her to a dinner theatre to see a live performance. She fell in love and at her wedding she walked down the aisle to Somewhere over the Rainbow and her father/daughter dance was a version of the same song! You're right - Dorothy would have been a lot of pressure!

Mar. 30, 2010 1:26 pm
What a fun idea for a blog! it's neat to get the stories behind others' names. Obviously I'm not quite so creative...I'm Rebecca, and Miller is my last name, thanks to that handsome man in my picture :-) We live in Indiana (but my whole family is from WV, so I'm pretty country) with our dog Eleanor, who, if she was a person, would undoubtedly be my best friend. And I LOVE everything about food!

K-Dub
Mar. 30, 2010 4:08 pm
Great blog Mother Ann! I can picture my mother running around the house with her favorite shirt in her hand that I ruined (that's a whole other story) yelling Kelly Renee!! ha ha My nickname isn't anything to write home about. My first name is Kelly and my last name starts with a W, hence K-Dub! I'm a California girl through and through, can't imagine living anywhere else. I love to read, Stephen King or well anything really. I love kids...don't have any of my own yet but I'm auntie to all my friends little ones. I like to drink a little wine, a love quiet house, gardening at the crack of dawn, taking my dog for a walk. I absolutely can't stand cold coffee, loud noises, and when our boxer has issues with his bottom and clears out the entire living room! Thanks for sharing!!! :)

Mar. 30, 2010 4:59 pm
Hi Mother Ann. Great idea for a blog. My name isn't anything special I am very addicted to chocolate and my favorite number is 55. I love reading books especially sci-fi/fantasy books. I love baking, especially my new hobby cake decorating! I'm a country girl at heart. I'm a pretty picky eater so I have recently discovered the fun of cooking for myself and tweaking recipes until they fit my tastes.

Mar. 30, 2010 6:31 pm
that's so funny! And I love it :) well I'm Kitty Cookie - and I'm still trying to figure out how I got that :) I LOVE cats, and love baking cookies, so i joined the two together. some random facts: a) I'm homeschooled b) I'm addicted to pretzel bread c) I like making movies

Mar. 30, 2010 7:23 pm
Hi Mother Ann! I love how you got that; my mother would also use the "Lisa Marie" if I was in trouble. My name comes from my love for Dr. Suess books. I have alot of friends who are exchange students & am about to make my bathroom into a Dr. Suess room with "I do not like green eggs and ham" written in all their different languages as a type of border or graffiti along the top of the wall. I'm still trying to figure out how to make a Trufula (sp?) tree in the corner. My husband is a firefighter/paramedic and I am an artist & florist. We have a 14 year old son who is a very good golfer & jr. lifeguard here in Florida. I have 3 cats, 11 turtles, a Russian tortoise, and an African water frog. I guess us cooks DO love animals! I love to cook (especially soups, garden, scuba dive, and geocache. My newest thing is having my Southern bell friend, Miss Jo teach me how to cook authentic Southern dishes. I've never written on this site before, but this has been so much fun & I LOVE reading about everyone. Thanks!

LOL @ what kids say! I have a dog named Pinyonas after a 4 year old cousin's imaginary dog :) My AR name is from a friend's misspelling of my name at a bowling alley. The misspelling is more exciting IMO.

EAKE
Mar. 31, 2010 2:48 am
Don't know why it took me so long to check your blog?!?...it's GREAT!!!!...EAKE, first initials of my 4 kids, Ethan, Abigail, Kyle, Emma...I'm a bit of a recluse, LOVE teenagers and cooking for them, love gardening, hate winter, I'm quite artistic (should do more with that), I'm rather opinionated ;o)...HATE gossip!!!!

Mar. 31, 2010 4:56 am
Wow what a great blog I always love reading about other AR members. How did my name come about, I have used apple.strudel for many different sites over the years (at least for the last 6 years), I first came up with the name because I do love apple strudel, and thought the name had a good ring to it also. I guess I am too lazy to try and think of anything else, so just keep using the same name. A little about me, I just love to shop (there I have said it, I guess its like confession that yes I do have a problem) I love to buy anything and everything from cook ware, shoes, bags, food. You name it I enjoy shopping for it!! If I am not shopping that I am either meeting friends for coffee or lunch, or at home baking!

Mar. 31, 2010 4:59 am
I love teenagers, too! There aren't many of us out there - most of my friends think I'm crazy... But,maybe I am - I do work in a high school, surrounded by teenagers all day long.

joyh
Mar. 31, 2010 5:59 am
I've never written here before either but after reading the comments this AM, it seemed time to join in. About the name: Joy is my name and the H is the first initial of my last name. Clever of me, right? : ) I've been married for over 47 years to the same fine man and am the mom of 2 grown daughters. Between them they have 3 sons who have decided that I am no longer Nana but Gram. My youngest grandson is 11 and was born with CP and has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. I'm co-parenting with his mom and do most of the day-to-day raising because she's in grad school or at work. Love to cook--we enjoy foods from many cultures and as well as from regions within the US. I taught high school English, have 'subbed' in many States (we've moved frequently thanks to the Marine Corps or the plastics industry), and generally taught somebody's kids since I was 14. Now I do it on a daily basis here at home. Tim is in a regular classroom and is one the brightest students in the 5th grade at his school. We have to aging dogs in the house--a golden retriever mix and a Corgi mix. They are Mac and Lewis, respectively. I love reading and knitting --socks especially. The family loves to eat well and from a wide variety of menus.

Mar. 31, 2010 6:05 am
Hi Joy! I once knitted a pair of red socks for my uncle - I'm not sure if he ever really wore them other than when he tried them on when I gave them to him! I was about 12 at the time. Wow! I had completely forgotten about those until I read your comment...

Mar. 31, 2010 8:47 am
Hi! I don't have a really original name - I'm Pam and I have three boys, so... Random facts: I collect snowmen, I hate peanut butter, I like to sew but rarely have the time. I'm trying to teach myself photography with a REAL camera - my first!

Mar. 31, 2010 9:01 am
Hi Mother Ann. Your story about using your kids' full names when they're in trouble reminds me of what my grandma (who had 9 children) told me when I was expecting my son and we couldn't decide on a name. She said to go to the back door of the house, and yell the full name at the top of your voice about 10 times. If you still liked it after that, then it's a keeper/. Her theory was, that was how you'll hear it most often while the kids are growing up, so if it souds good at full volume, it's a good one! :) Anyway, my name is just a combo of my real name and my favorite color. Random facts - I'm the proud mama to one english bulldog (Ellie, 10 years old), and one crazy little boy (Lex, 4 years old). I LOVE the Chicago Bears, I'm a total bookworm, and my husband is my best friend.

Mar. 31, 2010 9:09 am
I'm afraid mine isn't very original, a combination of my first and middle name and my year of birth, Janelle Marie and just turned 46. I've been using it forever on whatever site I join...to chat, etc. I love to cook and feed my family. I love to grocery shop....isn't that silly, lol. I'm on my third marriage...first time too young, second for the wrong reasons and last for all the right reasons. He's my love and my best friend. I've worked for my boss going on 17 years and I enjoy my job (most days). I had the pleasure of being in the room when my little granddaughter was born 2 years ago and cried like a baby when I saw her little face. I'm proud that my son is a good father...who woulda thunk it, haha. I have a ton of cookbooks but tend to come to this site more to find a recipe idea. I just love to look at them though! I usually always happy....hey it takes up too much energy to be otherwise and like you, I do not worry about things I cannot control. I think my Dad told me that once...we lost him last year and I think about him every day.

Mar. 31, 2010 9:29 am
A few years ago, I was out with my sister and a couple of our girl cousins (Girls Night Out) and one of my oldest friends (30+ years, she's like family). I like that make up with a little sparkle in it. After a few (?!) cocktails, they (and I) were having quite the laugh over this quirk of mine and they took to calling me "Sparkle". My daughter picked up on it (apparently we were HILARIOUS when we got home, a few sheets to the wind) and that year at Christmas, she bought me a gold snowflake with "sparkle" across it. It hangs over my sink on the cabinet. I'm usually positive and upbeat. I smile at everyone. . . there are no strangers, just friends I haven't met. I love coffee. I hate to dust also ( dust is a protective covering for furniture. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.) I love your story Mother Ann. When my 25 yr. old daughter was young she used to call me "Mamahun". . . my friend thought that was too adorable, and it was :). I love to bake, especially bread and haven't bought bread in the store for 6 mos. Haven't bought tortillas (or chips) for 4 mos. Great blog!! So fun to read. Thanks!

Mar. 31, 2010 9:33 am
Just came across this great blog and its so interesting finding out about your names! Mine has a very simple explanation, I *love to cook*, am doing cooking as my profession and relaxation!(Have 4 kids from 15-21years, a cat, a dog and not to forgett a lovely husband of 21 years)

Mar. 31, 2010 9:53 am
Hi Ann! This is great. Shout out to SG for sending us this way. It's funny how you *see* people through their posts. Just like in "real life" you must be careful. My name is my sisters (who gifted me my supporting membership) uninspired tag. Growing up I stayed in the two name category. The birth date, I felt was just plain old meanness for my being four years younger.lol. I'm a divorced Grandma of four. The baby, a thirteen yr. old boy I have raised since he was 10mos. He is my joy. I'm a mom to Angel the cutest little Rat Terrier ever! Having never had anything but German Shepherds and Daschunds my sister gifted me with her as well. Any who don't know, they're very hyper. I guess she figured at 57 all I needed was to chase her and cook!! I'm an accountant who has fallen through the cracks of the workforce like so many others, so it's nice to have *friends* here . You all have wonderful stories. Nice to meet you.

Mar. 31, 2010 10:01 am
My name comes from the fact that ever since I was little my Dad's nickname for me was Brat or The Brat LOL I had another name FriskyBrat but that got me the kind of attention online that I didn't want, if you know what I mean....UGH pervs!! Anyway, I lived in CA/San Diego most of my life so Cally Brat seemed fiting. I live in WA state now, but am still a CallyBrat through and through :)

Mar. 31, 2010 10:08 am
I've been The Mominator for a LONG time! It's been my email ever since Al Gore invented the internet, and it's my license plate. Random Facts: I can't stand children and animals. All they do is eat my food, poop, mess up my house, and make noise. Can't stand 'em ;)

Mar. 31, 2010 10:09 am
Thanks to Gma for mentioning your blog. I don't get to browse through the blogs regularly so I missed this one. There are so many *names* on AR that I have been curious about...lots of fun to see how far off the mark I was trying to figure some of them out! Wyatt is my beloved black lab/German shorthair, he is 10 and slowing down, he's a big boy with an even bigger heart! Everybody loves Wyatt! I have had many dogs over my lifetime but he is the most special to me, ever. Shhh, don't tell Penny (my yellow lab). About me: my hubby and I have one adopted daughter who is the light of our life! I live in an old (130+ yr.)farmhouse complete with ghost, have an old gray mare that ain't what she used to be and about 50 chickens. I have been an RN for 30yrs and I plan on dropping dead on the job! I love having my special family here on AR!

Mar. 31, 2010 10:19 am
Mine comes from my father and grandfather who used to take me for long walks on the beaches near my father's childhood home. We always managed to find some 'treasure' like a seagull feather or a beautiful piece of sea glass. My mother told me one day that my bedroom looked like a beachcomber's hut because I had so many 'treasures' on display. Anyway, the name stuck. Even my photography business is called 'Beachcomber Studios'. You can see what a beautiful little corner of the world I live in by checking out my portfolio at www.beachcomberstudios.com. And BTW Mother Ann, it should come as no surprise, I collect lighthouses too! LOL

Mrs.S
Mar. 31, 2010 10:24 am
Until recently, my profile name was SusieQ (remember the Rolling Stone's song "SusieQ"?) I was named after my paternal Great-Grandmother, Susie. My friends call me Susie or Sue [Susan is formal for non-friends and business; and my mother would call me Susan when I was 'in trouble'! lol.] But, then saw there are SO MANY SusieQ's and [Susie] on AR!!! (they don't ALL post on the RE). So, I changed to Mrs.S and took everything else off my AR Profile. Why you ask?... My goal this year is to get organized... I had so many great recipes saved in my AR Recipe Box, but seldom had time to go back and 'look' at them on the computer, so I now print the recipes that I know we will like and actually make, and that has been working for me. I print two copies; one to take into the kitchen with me, and the other 'clean' copy will get my personal notes (I did throw away a couple recipes we did not like, but other printed recipes have my notes of what I did/changes to be followed the next time).

Mar. 31, 2010 10:36 am
What fun this has been to read!! I often wondered how people came up with their names. While I have used this site for about 7 years, I was never a registered member until this year. I asked the kids what they thought my screen name should be. At the time we were watching Sound of Music, the part where the Von Trapps are singing in the festival, stalling for time. So they're singing " Tea with jam, jam and bread.." over and over and over. My youngest said "How about jam and bread?" So I said sure, then my oldest says "It has to Jammin' Bread, it's cooler." So I said ok and here I am! Random facts: I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my husband of (almost) 17 years, two daughters, ages 12 and 15, a cat, a puppy, and three fish. My favorite pastimes are reading and going to thrift shops and used bookstores(besides cooking, that is). I love animals and the outdoors but don't like yardwork and I really, really don't like typing, I have never been good at it (Sheesh, took me forever to do this much!!)

Tate
Mar. 31, 2010 11:18 am
Tate is short for Tater (which I hate). When I was a baby my mom combed what little hair I had into a big curl on the top of my head like the comic strip Snuffy Smith's baby Tater, so my 4 yr old brother started calling me sweet tater. The family called me that until I was old enough to STRONGLY object and refuse to answer or speak to anyone who called me that so they changed it to Tate and it's been that way for 40 years. A few random facts, I collect Stangle pottery and pigs, love to bake, and I want to learn how to play the piano. Enjoyed your blog and look forward to more.

Mar. 31, 2010 11:26 am
Wow! So nice to "meet" all of you! The stories just go on and on! Yet, many of us have things in common - besides cooking. It would be so neat if there were ever some sort of "reunion" where we could actually meet in person.

Mar. 31, 2010 12:25 pm
Oh Mother Ann!!! What an idea! Can you imagine the FOOD?????

Mar. 31, 2010 12:29 pm
I just gained 10 pounds thinking about all the food!!!

Mar. 31, 2010 12:54 pm
Mother Ann, I posted way at the top of this thread, but I had to come back and say what everyone else is saying. What fun this was to read! Usually if a thread is this long, I get half way thru and then give up. This time I read every work and will keep commng back to see if there are any new additions.

Mar. 31, 2010 1:22 pm
Hey Mother Ann! Well, my screen name's not that creative - my name's Crystal and my last initial is R. Fun Facts: In the past three years I've vacationed to Virginia Beach, Los Angeles, and Ireland. And this year we plan to go to Japan! I'm engaged to my brother's best friend! haha I've known him since I was about 6, and we started dating about 4 years ago. Lastly, my life goal is to swim with whales. I think that would absolutely breath taking!

Mar. 31, 2010 1:29 pm
Crystal! I knew you'd have some really interesting facts!! I've been to Virginia Beach but not the other places. I'm not so sure about swimming with whales - they are a little too big for me! LOL! Maybe dolphins I could handle! That's awesome - marrying your brother's best friend. My older sister married an ex-boyfriend of mine - they didn't stay married long, though. Her new hubby is way better!!

fanaticmom
Mar. 31, 2010 2:08 pm
I am a stay home mom, 2 kids and a very busy husband (he works extra so I can be home with the kids. I have always enjoyed football and over the past few years have gotten to be more fanatic than your average fan, hence the name "fanaticmom". I love to cook, volunteer at the kids' school, sew, crochet, and of course, football. Other that that one oddity I could be Little Suzy Homemaker.

Mar. 31, 2010 2:12 pm
I'm not much of a football fan - football is where my son broke his back in 9th grade. I wasn't much into it then and even less so now. He's fine, but I still don't like the sport. All other sports I am a fanatic, though! You're a modern day Suzy Homemaker!! Hee!hee!!

Mother Ann: So, after riding your son's dirt bike, you didn't pick up a new hobby?

Hi, Mother Ann! Your story is hilarious. I often got called "Heather Maria!!!!" when I was a kid. My name comes from my love for the golden oldie music era, and my love for cooking. My boyfriend can't stand my music half of the time, whether it be Frankie Valli or The Contours, half of the time he grimaces when I start to play it. He works from 5pm to 1am Monday through Friday, and if i'm not working that night also, I love to cook a dinner for him to come to. The look on his face when he walks in the door and smells a home cooked meal is priceless. So, naturally, I like to listen to music when I cook, and sing to myself (I was in an honor choir in high school, but I don't have the nerve to sing in front of anyone but my boyfriend, who is an incredible singer), and of course I'm going to turn my pandora music station on my Frankie Valli station, hence "cookingtotheoldies". the 88 is my birth year (yep, I'm a youngin'). Random facts: I work at a large restaurant chain as a server, bartender, cook, cashier, and hostess, and was recently promoted to a certified trainer, and I'm working on getting certified in every single area of the restaurant. My boyfriend and I are hopefully getting engaged this year :) I love ghost hunting and everything involved in the paranormal (my mom died when I was 10, and I guess I would like to believe that there is a way I can communicate with her). I'm an epileptic due to a head injury when I was 3, so I can't go out to the bars with strobelights, drink, or do anything the other kids my age do. I love kids; I have 11 nieces and nephews, and I can't wait to start my family and be the mother that my own mother didn't get the chance to be with me.

Great Blog, I actually start from the most recent post and go to the beginning. What wonderful stories! Mine is pretty average. I discovered www.30daygourmet.com out of necessity and became hooked on freezer cooking when my husband joined the navy (at 47) after being the stay at home parent for more than a decade! I work fulltime as a teacher and have two school aged sons. Both are enough to keep me hopping but doing it alone most of the time meant that I had to figure out the meal thing really quickly or I'd go crazy. I found this to be by far the most stressful part of organizing a household alone. My freezer and 30day gourmet saved me and got me through the first couple of stressful years. Now I'm branching out and have discovered allrecipes. I love to cook and try new recipes. Thanks to all who post. I learn a lot everytime I get to this site.

Great blog and great responses. BigShot is my 13 year old feline baby. Random facts I have 5 kids, all adults; met my husband when I was 14 and knew I'd marry him; I collect cobalt blue depression glass; and like a few others have been sidelined by the economy. We are a food loving family and my kids also heard first and middle names when I was miffed and first, middle and last if they really got on my last nerve.

This has been fun reading name history. Mine is a bit obvious I live in North Pole and I am a former Guidance Counselor turned stay at home mom. I have four kiddos 7, 6, 3, and 1. I have been an avid AR user for about 5 years.

Mar. 31, 2010 6:23 pm
Hi Northpolemom! I am a guidance office secretary! You have your hands full with your little ones. LOL Bikerfamily! No, I did not get a new hobby. I figured I should stop while I was ahead... Hee!hee!

Great blog! My AR name is mine & DH's initials + our last name--plus I love to cook, bake, and do everything in the kitchen, so it's fitting. I love true stories and biographies, have 2 adorable girls, and can fix almost anything. I love to create things also, and taught myself to sew, and hardly ever use a pattern. If I can see it, I can normally do it. ; )

Hi Mother Ann. Last summer we spent some money updating our 20 year old kitchen its so nice, I thought I better start producing something out of it. At several social functions people would ask what I was up to? my reply was I cook now!!!I try to make something new 5 days a week my hubby is loving it and wonders why we didnt fix up the kitchen years ago!!!!

I forgot to put in my last comment - my mom did the same thing with my brother and me. Except, we both have TWO middle names! haha So I guess we had a little more leeway. When I was in a little bit of trouble, she yelled Crystal Anne. When I did something worse, it was Crystal Anne Starr. And of course the full name when I was *really* in trouble. Oh, and my brother and I have the same initials, CASR. He's Charles Anthony Scott R. My parents swear they didn't plan it that way. Yeeeeah, sure. :P

Apr. 1, 2010 6:23 am
Mornin' Crystal! Wish I had given my son a few more names. LOL. Sometimes just the Stephen Robert Y. did not cut it! :-D Interesting you have the same initials as your brother.... I wanted to be somewhat clever with my kids names but it didn't work out that way. My parents gave me and my 3 siblings names that were variations/parts of their names. My mom is Joann - my older sister's middle name is Jo and mine is Ann. My dad's name is Robert Eugene - my brother's middle name is Robert and my little sister's first name is Jean. I always thought that was clever and as kids we could never figure out how OUR parents could think something like that up! Ha!ha!

Apr. 1, 2010 10:41 am
Okay new name it's a mixture of a nick my neices and nephews called when they couldn't say mine. Plus my age now.

Apr. 1, 2010 11:53 am
Great idea, Mother Ann! Generated some interesting comments. My first name is Adriayn (it's always available since no one else spells it this way) and because my middle name has 14 letters, I didn't get "middle-named" much as a kid! Either that, or I was a perfect child who never got in trouble, not! I love chocolate, my hubby and kids, soccer and seashells...not necessarily in that order!

I don't normally respond but interesting question :) My name actually came from a story I heard about a quadroon girl on my honeymoon in New Orleans. It is actually kind of a sad story but the name kind of stuck. I started using Jolie on various roleplaying games (mudds to anyone that knows what that is) and when I needed to get a new email address I needed a second part and I am a dreamer...so it stuck from there. Various tidbits, I recently quit my job so I am on my second week of staying home...enjoyable yes, nervous still bout money...but isn't everyone? My husband and I are into Ren Festivals and yes we dress up in full period costumes, I love to bake...sometimes too much! I play World of Warcraft, paint, and I love my 13 year old beagle dog more than anything sometimes..he is my baby.

Hi Mother Ann. Love your blog...My name stems from one halloween when the Drew Carey show was popular, I dressed up like Mimi from the show and went to work at the construction company I worked at. I went to the various construction jobsites and none of the guys knew it was someone in costume. They just thought it was some weird lady trying to solicit a lunch date from them. Then I started calling each one of them by name and they really started freaking out. When I finally gave in and laughed, they all knew who I was. Anyway, it was really just Me Being Me!! hee hee. Random facts > I love playing volleyball even though I'm only 5'2". I live in the country with my BF of 7 years (who just finished writing two songs about me, even though he's the type of guy that ususally doesn't express his emotions)I have a deaf white Boxer named Zeus and a black cat named Ella (who was born under my front porch). Oh and I have a 14 month old granddaughter who is the absolute light of my life!

Helloo! I'm Sarah. I just stumbled across your blog. Liked the blog. So I'm leaving a comment. Just thought I'd let you know. Oh! You already know. O_O Ahhh, yeah. To find out more about me, you can read my profile but a few random facts about me is well, I'm blunt. And strange. I love standing out and being uniquely me. I think teenagers are too obsessed with blending and fitting in. For me, it's "Be who YOU are and who God meant you to be!" As for my name (CoconutGirl) weeelll, I love coconut oil. Like, a lot. The stuff is amazing. And growing up in the Philippines and having a Filipino mom I've learned a lot about it. :) I haven't been on AR much lately but hopefully I'll start visiting more. :)

Hi, My name is Lori. Not sure how I got my name or I just forgot as it might not have been a good story to remember. I have 3 kids. Christopher whom is named after his biological sperm donor (middle name). While pregnant with Chris I said if he is a girl he will be Crystal. So when I had my second child she ended up as Crystal. Then while pregnant with my last child, I was watching a daytime program and then came Khrystyne. Yes they all start with chris sounding names but with 2 C's and 1 K. Khrystyne's initials are K.L.K. My husband calls me lilmom, as I am a mom and I am not very big. That is my story.

Hi Mother Ann! great blog! I have been here since - I think- Dec. 09 and recently became a member:-) I am a city girl- born and raised about 9 miles from NYC. Had enuf and moved to rural NWestern , NJ. Lots of black bears! lol:-) My daughter was taught in school - dont feed them or stare them in the eye and make lots of noise- it worked for us! Hubby then had to commute 130 miles round trip every day to and from work. We moved closer to the city! Looked out our window shortly after moving and they were back! More Bears! Hence the name!:-) Love where we live now- a bit rural, but near highways and civilization! A year after we moved here- about a half hour east- his company moved 10 miles away! A bit about me, I love cooking and am not using my old cookbooks very much at all! I fine better recipes on here- complete with reviews! Love that:-) ! I work part time for hubby's company love to garden and decorate. I was a realtor , until the market dropped:-( I hope to go back to it again soon!Just doing referrals now. I love music, reading, making dinners for family and friends and warm sunny days:-) Thanks for this grat blog!

I'm a little far from NJ (I live in NE Ohio) but that does sound like a lot of fun and for a good cause! I always wanted to see a bear in the wild - we went backpacking, hiking, camping and no luck. Then, we went to Shenandoah Valley in VA -saw one 10 ft from the car! The next year we went to Smoky Mtn., TN - we saw so many bears I quit counting! I love bears - but I will say I don't want to see them up too close and personal - from a distance is fine...

Well, as you can see, I am completely unoriginal when it comes to name choice! My first name is Barbara, and my last name starts with "K." I live in West MI, near Lake Michigan. My husband & I love it here. We have a very quirky Bassset Hound, and a Siamese cat, who is a rescue. It took her a long time to learn to trust us, but now she's the most affectionate cat I've ever had...and I've had a lot of cats over the years! Our human Kids are grown, and gone, and we have 6 precious grandchildren, who live in various parts of the USA. I love chocolate and love to read. The Shining and The Stand are 2 of my favorite Stephen King books. I hesitate to bring this up, but I hve had a neurological illness for a couple of years, and am not doing great. Reading is a good escape, and I like to read recipes almost as much as I like to read fiction. I truly enjoy the A-R site!

What a great way to get everyone involved. I loved this blog! My screen name all stems from my hubby. My name is Jen. The 536 comes from when hubby and I were dating. Pagers were the big thing back then, (no cell phones to speak of) so when I left his house at night he'd be worried. I didn't want to call the house and wake up his family late at night so I'd send him a pager message that read 536 which is Jen spelled out on a number pad. The Mc was added after we were married. Random facts: I adore Stephen King books. I even read them to our infant daughters when they were born. I figured it didn't matter what I read then, just the tone of my voice. So I read the entire Dark Tower novels (book 7 had just come out) and all the Harry Potter books to them, as well as Lord of the Rings.

Apr. 2, 2010 8:16 am
My screen name started with my nickname, Kat, which a close friend changed to Kats. My favorite place to be is in the kitchen. And of course, my cats spring into action the minute I head there to keep me company and watch the proceedings intently. They could probably be pretty good cooks themselves by now if they had thumbs. So, katsinthekitchen is kind of a catch-all play on words that works perfectly to describe me. Today I am making 6 dozen cupcakes for a big dinner at our local Elks lodge, where my hubby will be installed as one of the officers. There will be three flavors, two of which are from recipes from AR. Lemon with lemon frosting, dark chocolate with ganache, and red velvet with cream cheese frosting. Of course a box would make for quicker work but there isn't a single one on the shelves that doesn't have hydrogenated oil and I refuse to eat or serve that stuff. So, it's scratch cupcakes and frosting. The cupcakes are in honor of my hubby's birthday which is tomorrow. I hope I get some recipe requests so I can share this great site with even more people. Happy Easter, Passover, Spring or whatever you celebrate, to all :-)

Hi there Mother Ann! Well, as for my name, it was back in 99 when I was in my freshman yr. of college and setting up a new email account. Friends used to joke that I had a 6th sense and could detect when it was going to rain better than the weatherman (I live in L.A. if that makes you understand a little better). And others would tell me that my posture and the way I carried myself was very regal. So in choosing a name I thought of someone saying "All hail the rain queen" only, I wanted something MORE--it was an email address after all. If you're going to make something up, make sure you make it as exaggerated as possible. Therefore don't be a queen, be a goddess. And so, spelling rain as "reign" gives it the double meaning. But, aside from that, I'm a carefree, friendly individual that is rumored to get along with anyone I meet. I have used AR for years, but never created an account until last year (not really sure why that is though). I am an avid reader who loves all things fantasy-related, traveling, meeting new people, learning about different cultures and religions, playing video games, and just trying to make the most out of life.

Edubz
Apr. 2, 2010 11:19 am
Like K-dub up there somewhere, my name comes from my first initial and the dub part is from the W in the new last name i adopted from my hubby 2 years ago. As for the z at the end: my kid sister is of the generation of internet slang gone wild. She adds a Z the end of everything for example, LOL turned into LoLz. Nice to meet you all!

Apr. 2, 2010 12:01 pm
Well, I study Egyptian myths, and Greek myths, and Mayan myths, and a bunch of others mythology types. The "Ren" part is actually spelled "Rn", but pronounced the same way. "Ankh" is a way of saying "Good luck, prosperity, and wealth", and is often used in temple or tomb pictures. It's only one of my various aliases, but on different sites.

400luv
Apr. 3, 2010 6:55 am
I guess I'm late to the party...oh well. I run the 400 meter race in track and I really enjoy it, thus my name 400luv. But my real name is Faith. Some facts about me...I'm 14. I love to read mysteries, historical fiction and of course COOKBOOKS!! I play the piano and sing, and I do all kinds of art. I have an older brother and an older sister, and two cats that don't get along. And of course, I'm addicted to baking and cooking, but I'm also a bit of a health nut. I want to be either a singer-songwriter or a chef when I grow up. So, that's a bit about me. I really enjoyed reading what other people posted here too! :-)

Apr. 3, 2010 7:05 am
Hi 400luv! When I was your age (many years ago!LOL) I also ran track. I ran the 400 and the 800, but back then it was the 440 and the 880 (yards that is). Good luck and keep running!! For if you do, you can bake to your heart's content and just run it off. Ha!ha!

400luv
Apr. 3, 2010 7:22 am
You do NOT want to see me run a 800. :-D No way. Actually, my best race is the 200, I just happen to enjoy the 400 more. I forgot to mention I also do the long jump. I'm afraid I don't have anything to "run off"...I went to the doctor and my body mass index is like 15.5...I need to gain ten or fifteen pounds but I eat like a darn machine. It really stinks.:-(

Apr. 3, 2010 7:34 am
I have 2 children just like you - my son's body mass index was something like a 12 his senior year in high school. College baseball coach has "fattened" him up some, but not much. My daughter, now 25, is still very slim. Milk shakes and ice cream helped my son. Good luck in track season this year!

Hi! Got my name cause I'm a born and bred southern Californian! Love watching the Disneyland fireworks every night from my back porch and I'm about 11 miles from the beach. Love to cook for my group; husband of 36 years, daughter and son-in-law and my 25 year old son. Hate to bake, don't like sweets-give me chips and salsa anytime! Newly retired, starting a garden, and I love being with my two cats Baby and Buster who found us -just when we had said "No more pets!" I'm allergic to alcohol so I sign when I hear of those of you enjoying a glass of wine! My real name is Marla-which makes most of my mail come to Mary, Maria, Martha, Marlo, etc. Didn't know my name was that unusual! Love all the posts! Enjoyed reading them all-

Apr. 3, 2010 8:14 pm
Hello everyone. I chose this name because I was tired of using the same name as my email address but I needed one I would remember. I have lived many places; a couple of countries and several states. So I decided to use this as a theme. I am originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where we call all people from there "Yoopers". The high school I graduated from, mascot was...Eskimo. And now...I live in Texas. So...there it is. I love traveling, prefer potatoes or pasta to chocolate, like to read or watch, happy little stories...The Elm Creek Quilters series is one I like, and James Heriot stories were good, Also read and enjoyed the Left Behind series. I love cooking with kids, and have four kids of my own and two grandchildren so far. I love to travel and taking nature pictures. I also tend to ramble on and on when I talk....(ya think!!!!!) LOL

Katy Belle
Apr. 4, 2010 2:48 am
I originally created my name for a Disney site. I wanted to be Tinker Belle, but that was taken. I was living in Katy, TX at the time, so I became Katy Belle. Hmmmm... facts... I am a SAHM of 3 boys, Americans living in the Middle East. Not military or missionary, as most assume...oil company. I LOVE to travel. Have visited about 15 countries so far, and 40 of the States in the USA. Hope to get to all 50 states in my lifetime. Love to cook. Love to read, all kinds of things. I cry at practially EVERY movie. I didn't cry at Ice Age II.

Mine is pretty simple - my last name is Griffin (sounds cool, being mythical and Irish and all, huh?) and DH and I got married on October 10th, so 10 is kinda a special number. I briefly considered using a food-related nickname DH has for me...... but somehow I didn't want Cinnabunns on every post I made..... Aaaaanywho, I'm living in London for a year doing my Master's degree, and baking/cooking is my stress relief therapy!

Thanks for a really interesting blog! I am the youngest of 7 kids and was born on the 7th of February. I recently changed careers. After nearly 20 years as a real estate paralegal, I took a job as a baker and I LOVE it. I bake at a facility where we feed hundreds of construction workers who are building a new microchip manufacturing plant. Our facility is temporary - it's actually an insulated tent made of plastic on a steel frame and the kitchen is built into a shipping container - those big metal boxes that are loaded onto ships! I don't have any kids but have a couple of stepdaughters and three granddaughters aged 5, 4 and 2. I have 4 cats, three of whom were "contributed" by my stepdaughters.

Apr. 4, 2010 6:06 pm
Mother Ann - Greeting fellow Buckeye! Love your blog... I'm writing this from not-too-far-away Toledo. I went to Kent State in the 70's and passed through Streetsboro on my way to and from campus every month. I also worked at Twin Lakes Country Club while I was in college. Watching the country club members eat all that nice food helped develop my love of cooking. I should have been cooking in the kitchen instead of waiting tables. I started using AR like you to cut down on my cook book collection. Good thing I did... several years ago I had a house fire that burned most of my cookbooks, but all my AR recipes were stored carefully on the web. I come by my name honestly, I guess. My friends call me Princess and when I do something they think is princess-y... they say I am "such-a-princess". I guess it could be worse... and I must admit I like to shop, get my nails done, sleep in late, read books late into the night and to be pampered in general. But foremost, I love to cook ...and eat. I look forward to reading more of your blog and the cool responses from your readers. And I also think an AR get-together would be a wonderful idea.

Apr. 4, 2010 6:37 pm
Hi Princess! We have much in common! When I was young, we lived on Morris Rd. 2 houses from KSU! We moved from there after the May 4th riot and ended up in Streetsboro where I finished growing up and now work at the high school there. This has been a fun blog - I have learned so much about so many people.

I live in Grainger Co. TN. Known for their Grainger Co. tomatoes. Of course around here they're called "maters." I've traveled a lot and they are the best tomato I've had. I use them all different ways. Love 'em! Hence, TNMATER.

What a great blog, Mother Ann! I had several online names, and after a bit, I couldn't remember which one was used where. Soooo I just used the first letter of my name, Janet, and the last 3 letters of my last name. I live in a very small isolated mining town in northern Manitoba, Canada. I have 2 stepchildren, 7 grandkids and 3 small dogs. I love cooking and baking (mostly bread). Among many other things, I was a floral design artist for over 25 years, and I love to garden when I'm able. I'm a struggling artist currently trying to find a gallery that's closer to my home than Winnipeg (8 hours away) to carry my artwork. I enjoy crochetting, reading and quadding. This blog has been almost as fun to comment on as it has been to read!

Amazing read!! Thanks to everyone of you for your story!!!! God Bless you , and keep writing Rod

Apr. 6, 2010 3:07 pm
Mother Ann, I love the story of how you got your name! Priceless. Mine is not interesting, it's just my first two initials. I picked it because I figured it was simple. I don't actually have any nicknames (other than the one hubs calls me ;) Here is a fact about me that's food related - I was never much into cooking/food as an adventure until I discovered AR, and specifically, the exchange. I have always loved cooking healthy home made meals for my family, but that was it. Now I get excited about food and find I have a lot of fun with it and am getting very adventurous, trying lots of new things. Which is hard because hubs would be happiest with a continual rotation of: tacos/steak/sketti/steak/tacos/sketti & so on & so on! But, he lets me indulge my new passion without complaining (much). It would feel like a jail sentence to cook like that day in & day out. Oh, and I ADORE cilantro, but it's the one thing he absolutely cannot STAND. Uggh! Kids thankfully are pretty easy going tastebudwise! Good getting to know you!

Mine is my first initial, my son's, daughter's and my youngest son's and the initial of our beloved dog Abbey (who has since passed on) I really should change it and add CRR for my two stepdaughters and my DH :)

Started out with my name. Then realized that I could remember others more easily if they had a nickname. This one was easy! I had been called "baker bee," by two different people. I guess it is kind of the same as busy bee? But, I baked a lot. I love making desserts or just baking in the oven in general. Oh, and I had to put the smily face at the end, because I use that a lot! : )

About Me
I've been married for 32 years, and live in Ohio. We have a daughter who is married and lives nearby. Our son graduated from college and moved to South Dakota. He has his own place but still goes to visit my sister and brother-in-law and have dinner with them occasionally. We have a black lab that gets to go duck hunting with dad, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels. We own a Mexican restaurant and are learning alot about the food industry. I love to eat, go camping, read, spend time with family and friends, watch movies, and drink wine; not necessarily in that order.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake - anything chocolate is fine with me. Seafood, chicken dishes and slow-cooker fare.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I enjoy cooking together with wine. We pop open a bottle of wine and get cooking. :-)
My cooking triumphs
Whenever I can put together a meal that gets many compliments and leaves the diners satisfied is a triumph in my book! I love to cook meals for family and friends.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married we had my grandparent's-in-law over for a pot roast dinner. The meat came out great, but the potatoes and carrots were still half raw. My husband's grandfather went to cut his fork into a carrot and it flew off his plate. He looked at me, winked, and said he loved his carrots that way!
