Hubby is gone.... Dinner is whatever Mom wants.

I've been married over 28 years and have 2 kids.  The hubby still lives here, daughter is married and out of the house, and son is away at college most of the year.  That means for 28 years I have rarely been left home alone.  When those moments occurred, I treasured them.  Immensely.  While our kids were growing up and involved in sports my husband would not go out of town, he wanted to be here involved with their activities.   Now, as we have found ourselves to be "empty-nesters" my husband's job has suddenly started taking him out of town. Not often and never for more than one or two nights at a time.  I still treasure that time alone.  Immensely.

When he goes out of town that means dinner is whatever I want it to be.  Usually I don't do anything. I just graze.  Unless my daughter catches wind that Daddy is out of town. Then she insists I come over and have dinner with her and my son-in-law.  While that is very nice, and I love to see them and my "grand-puppy" cocker spaniel Maggie; it's still just so nice to stay home.  I put my pj's on early and "play" on the computer.  I nibble on whatever is at hand.

Tonight is one of those nights.  This night is especially great.  Tomorrow hubby will be home and so will my son for spring break.  Our house will once again be "rockin' and rollin'"  Things are never dull when Steve is home.  I can't wait for him to get here, but I'm enjoying the calm before the storm, so to speak.  So far I've grazed on Twinkies and yogurt with granola.  I think I'll go back for some more Twinkies....

I love to be home alone also. I'm not married anymore, but my DD still lives at home. I am so very grateful when she says she is going out , even if it's only for a couple of hours. I love her but sometimes I just love having the house to myself. Mag

I used to love being at home alone, when I was married to my Ex, I would wait in anticipation for the next time he wasn't going to be home! Now the thought of my 2nd husband going away fills me with dread! I love spending every moment with him... Night time especially, we are like siamese twins! Stuck back to back, without it I am lost and alone!! How odd that one person can change so much....

I absolutely adore my DH, However, I too enjoy a one or two night business trip out of town. I can just chill out and do whatever I want. Mind you I can do that when he home, but there is some decedant about doing it alone. My favorite thing to eat when DH is traveling in homemade Mac N Cheese.. not one of his favs.

Lynda, that is exactly how I feel! I don't want him gone more than a night or two, and not all the time. But, it is so nice to just chill alone...

I always make something that I know the hubby would never eat! It's usually pad thai (my FAVE!) I totally know what you mean, though. I get in my PJ's, get a girlie movie, crack open some wine, and enjoy the silence!

About Me
I've been married for 32 years, and live in Ohio. We have a daughter who is married and lives nearby. Our son graduated from college and moved to South Dakota. He has his own place but still goes to visit my sister and brother-in-law and have dinner with them occasionally. We have a black lab that gets to go duck hunting with dad, 2 cats, 2 cockatiels. We own a Mexican restaurant and are learning alot about the food industry. I love to eat, go camping, read, spend time with family and friends, watch movies, and drink wine; not necessarily in that order.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake - anything chocolate is fine with me. Seafood, chicken dishes and slow-cooker fare.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I enjoy cooking together with wine. We pop open a bottle of wine and get cooking. :-)
My cooking triumphs
Whenever I can put together a meal that gets many compliments and leaves the diners satisfied is a triumph in my book! I love to cook meals for family and friends.
My cooking tragedies
When I was first married we had my grandparent's-in-law over for a pot roast dinner. The meat came out great, but the potatoes and carrots were still half raw. My husband's grandfather went to cut his fork into a carrot and it flew off his plate. He looked at me, winked, and said he loved his carrots that way!
