Grandmother's Oatmeal Cookies

I adore these cookies as-is, but do yourself a favor and make them with dried cranberries - amazing! I use a small ice cream scoop to scoop out the dough - is much faster. About halfway through baking, I smush them slightly with a slotted spatula, giving them nice little ridges on top. The butter-flavored shortening is key - regular flavor doesn't cut it. I started making these two years ago, and my hubby won't let me even think of trying another recipe.

Cathy's Banana Bread

I used 1 1/4 cups of very overripe bananas (3 bananas), 3/4 cup of sour cream, and 1 cup of sugar. I added 1 tsp. of cinnamon and grated in some fresh nutmeg. I also added some chopped pecans. I baked it in (2) 6-inch round pans. The taste was quite good--the banana flavor was strong and it was not too sweet. The consistency was like an airy cake, and it was very moist without being soggy or gummy. It's not the best I've ever had, but it's pretty darn good. My husband certainly didn't complain. ;-)

French Bread

I tried this recipe twice, thinking maybe I had done something wrong the first time. The dough never pulled together properly, the bread was entirely too dense, and it had very little taste, if any. I have made many other breads with no problem, but for some reason, I couldn't get this one to work.

Bake Sale Lemon Bars

These lemon bars are exceptional. The crust was very tasty, but thin enough that it did not overwhelm the lemon layer. Like others, I increased the lemon juice to 1/3 cup--that gave the perfect amount of tartness (lemony without being sour).

Challah II

This is hands-down the best bread I've ever made. Everyone goes crazy over it! The texture is dense and doughy, and the honey makes it super-sweet. I top mine with sesame seeds--simply sprinkle them on after brushing with the egg.

Good Old Fashioned Pancakes
