About this Cook
I love to cook and bake, love the process of it if you know what I mean. As an empty nester, I just don't have enough people to cook for anymore! I live with my (skinny) husband (who does love to eat, but I can expect only so much from him) and my dog Jilly who is rarely allowed to sample. So my interest has led me to branch into other directions that have a similar process, but don't result in quite so much to eat. Soapmaking and the production of various bath items is a large interest and back to food, I am just beginning experimentation into cheesemaking. But all that said and done, I am happiest when expecting friends or family and busily hunting recipes and making a meal for them to enjoy. (And secretly hoping for requests for 2nds and happy compliments!)
My favorite things to cook
Comfort foods! Love soups and stews. It doesn't really matter though, I just eat it up when whoever is served says mmmmn, that was good!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving. I cook every year and try to include something new with my family's traditional favorites.
My cooking triumphs
I have a knack for getting everything pulled together and served hot all at the right time. Its not all that special i guess, but I feel pretty accomplished when I put out a spread with 7 hot dishes next to the turkey and later people say "you make it look easy".
My cooking tragedies
Well its been many years ago now, but in one meal for my new in-laws I managed to make green gravy (yummy with your eyes closed), accidently included some of the wooden spoon in the breadcrumbs for my meatloaf. (As I blended the spoon with the bread, I thought oh well, who will notice??) -- It was my MIL. And somehow, my BIL found a screw from the salt mill in his mashed potatoes!

Brussels Sprouts with Mushrooms
Great recipe, thanks! Of course I already love Brussels sprouts and that helps, but this is a great way to prepare them. I made this for Thanksgiving and heard words like awesome around the table! I agree with others that it's important to not overcook Brussels sprouts. I always cut the largest ones in half and then steam the batch til tender and bright green. Mmmmn.

Chinese Napa Cabbage Salad
Ooh, great! I just had it for the first time at a party so was really happy to come across this recipe. My family loved it too and I'll be serving it often. I agree with others that it doesn't hold up well after its been tossed, so make only as much as you think you'll eat. (Which was easy in my case because they ate the whole thing!)

Sugarless Fruitcake
Very good. Dense and delicious, plenty sweet just as written. Thanks! I didn't soak the berries for an hour, just as I prepped the other ingredients and that worked just fine. Like others, I had to bake mine for longer, but that is to be expected as oven temps vary and it is quite moist.
