Grandma VanDoren's White Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2014
I can't believe I actually made bread! This is a great recipe for first-timers. I'm pretty sure I messed up several times, and it still turned out really well. I love the lightness of this bread. I had to be pretty gentle while slicing it and I don't know yet how well it will hold up for things like grilled cheese or french toast, but I think that's in part due to my poor kneading technique. I found the accompanying video to be extremely helpful as well!

Salmon Patties III

Reviewed: Jun. 26, 2010
this recipe was pretty good. i changed it up a bit, based on what i had on hand. first, i used canned salmon and mashed a leftover roasted potato instead of boiling one. i needed one extra egg and about a 1/4 cup more breadcrumbs to hold everything together. also, i skipped the cornflake crumbs (didn't have any), and added 1/4 cup of diced orange pepper i needed to use up. i love the flexibility of this recipe. thanks for sharing!

Feta Shrimp Pasta

Reviewed: May 10, 2010
The flavours in this recipe are an excellent combination, and I think it's a great start. Based on other reviewers' suggestions, I cut the amount of pasta in half (kept the other proportions the same), and added a clove of garlic in with the onion. I used a combination of olive oil and butter, and used some shrimp I had seasoned with garlic salt a few days prior, so they were VERY flavourful and delicious :) Even using 1/2 of the pasta, I still felt it could have used more sauce. But like I said, it's an excellent base recipe that is easy to customize and quick to prepare. Thanks for sharing!

Lime Chicken Soft Tacos

Reviewed: May 7, 2010
wow! this is a great recipe! i was a bit concerned about the red wine vinegar as well, but it really adds a nice touch! i altered the process somewhat - i cooked all of the ingredients together with the chicken, which i think really helped to intensify the flavour. also, i used garlic salt instead of regular salt and cayenne pepper instead of black. so really, i give it 5 stars with my alterations, but i honestly think it would have been just as good without the minor substitutions. i would recommend cooking the chicken with all of the other ingredients though. happy cooking!

Tacos in Pasta Shells

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2010
sooooooo good! i made these for girls' night with my fellow female grad students, and it received rave reviews! i made a few changes to suit my preferences. i started with about 1/2 an onion and a clove of garlic, then added the beef. as per other reviewers' suggestions, i used taco seasoning (1 package) instead of chili powder and salt. low-fat cream cheese was all we had on hand, and it worked beautifully. i also spread taco sauce (from taco bell) on the bottom of the pan, did not toss the pasta in butter (just rinsed it in cold water), and poured salsa over the top rather than taco sauce. also, i only used 1 cup of cheese (mexican blend). i served it with fresh diced tomatoes, chopped cilantro and sour cream. yum yum yum! can't wait to make it for the mr. :)

Szechwan Shrimp

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2010
i must have done something wrong, because i really didn't like this at all! the flavour of the ginger AND the red pepper flakes was waaaaaay too strong - the sauce tasted like a hot salt lick. i had to add sugar to balance out the flavours and make it even remotely palatable, which i really didn't want to have to do. but like i said, maybe i did something wrong. i give it 2 stars, because it was a good base, but needed lots of work to suit my tastes.

Sweet and Sour Drumettes

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2010
This. Is. Fantastic. I have a very low tolerance for bland, flavorless food, and this recipe was a hit! My boyfriend, who's a big fan of all good food, said it's one of the best things I've ever made. I skipped the frying (only because I didn't have oil), doubled the sauce (yum!), and took another reviewer's suggestion and added 1 tbsp of red pepper flakes for an extra kick. Fan-freakin'-tastic!

Glazed Chicken Wings

Reviewed: Nov. 21, 2009
This is one of the best recipes I've tried on this site. My boyfriend, the ultimate critic, gave it two thumbs up. The combination of flavours is delicious and unexpected. Thanks for sharing! I always season my chicken with salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika and rosemary, and this time was no exception...but make no mistake, the star was really the sauce!

Baked Ziti with Sausage

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2009
This is a great recipe. As per the other reviewers' advice, I sauteed the onion and garlic and cooked it along with the sausage. I also used hot Italian sausage to add a bit of a punch. My boyfriend, who isn't the biggest fan of pasta, gave it two thumbs up last night. Thanks :)
