Speedy Brownies

Reviewed: Apr. 1, 2014
This recipe is excellent! Chocolatey and dense and great flavour (even though I forgot to put the vanilla in - haha). For those who say they don't find the finished product dense and chewy, are you using an electric mixer or are you mixing by hand until "just" blended? Mixing by hand, and not over mixing, makes these wonderfully dense. Will make again.

Tina's Shortbread Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2013
These are phenomenal! I always make plain shortbread with coloured sugar on them for Christmas, but decided I'd add to my baking list and try these. Excellent! Wonderful texture! Simple to make. Definitely making these again! Thank you tinafox!

Quick and Almost-Professional Buttercream Icing

Reviewed: Nov. 11, 2013
Not sure if it was me or the recipe, I'm assuming I did something wrong. I made it according to the recipe instructions and put it in a piping bag. First 1/4 cup or so came out so running, I couldn't even make a shell border. Then I couldn't squeeze hard enough to get the "hard" icing out. I'm talking stiff as a board! I also found it rather gritty and VERY sweet. I will stick to my regular buttercream recipe next time. The only reason I used this one, is because I didn't make enough of my own and didn't have more high-ratio shortening to make more. I won't use this one again. Sorry.

Cheese Sauce for Broccoli and Cauliflower

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2013
Very easy and quick to make and even though I'm one of the lucky moms who's kids WILL eat their broccoli without a cheese sauce, I tend to not like it too much, so it helps me! LOL I made this once with old cheddar and it was MUCH better than with medium, so if you're going to make it stick to old or extra old cheddar. Thanks for this recipe! I'm sure I'll use it often :)

Tomato and Bacon Pasta Bake

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2013
When I make a recipe from this site, I make it as written with no alterations, rate and comment on that then next time I make it, I add my own touch. As written, this recipe was very good. My picky daughter ate it, only complaining about the onions (which I chopped large enough for her to find so she could take them out lol). I thought there should have been a little more sauce to go with the 18 oz of pasta. Now, I used elbow macaroni because that's all I had so maybe that was why it didn't seem to be very "saucy". I think next time I'll add a little oregano, perhaps some garlic. Other than that, I actually really enjoyed this. LOVED how fast it came together and dinner was on the table too!!

Pork Chops Over Rice

Reviewed: Apr. 1, 2013
I made this exactly as written with the exception of cutting back on the cayenne pepper. I think a tsp is too much. I put in a little less than half of that and it was plenty spicy enough for my kids and I..my husband probably would have put the whole tsp in, but he was out of town, so....lol I found the rice was absorbing the liquid a little too quickly and that would have resulted in undercooked pork chops, so I covered the pan and simmered for the 20 minutes. No problem with hard rice. It was cooked to perfection and the chops were so tender. I will definitely make this again. Even my 12 year-old daughter, who doesn't like you to mess with her rice LOVED this (pork isn't her fav and she didn't care for that part, but it's not the recipes fault).

Onion-Roasted Potatoes

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2012
So good! And so easy! I didn't use two types of potatoes because we wanted both potatoes and carrots roasted, so I subbed the sweet potatoes for carrots. We put them around a pork loin roast, did them for the time specified and OMG...mouthwateringly (if that's a word) awesome! Will make again, and although my kids refused to try them, my husband and I ate the entire pan! LOL

Whoopie Pies

Reviewed: Oct. 21, 2012
Very good! They were easy to make and put together. One note though is that I would let the batter sit for a few minutes after mixing. It didn't seem to spread as much after putting it on the baking sheet if you let it sit. The first couple of baking sheets I did, the little cakes turned out a little thin. But as I progressed and neared the end of the bowl, they mounded up and held their shape really well. I'm having a small issue though with the tops of my cake ripping off. Maybe the cake is too moist or I should have baked it longer, but it doesn't interfere with taste obviously. I didn't have that waxy feel in the filling like some suggested. Maybe due to the fact that once I added the milk/flour mixture to the shortening and sugar, I let it beat for about five minutes. Really mixed it well. All in all, excellent recipe and I would definitely make again. :)

Classic CRISCO® Pie Crust

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2012
People who know me, know that although I love baking, I suck at making pie crusts. My husband and I had purchased a large quantity of apples from the farmers market and spent a Saturday in the kitchen making pies. We started with a "no-fail" recipe I'd had for years and kept using...then promptly decided it was that recipe that caused me to think I couldn't make crusts! LOL We made one pie with it, then on the computer I went to look for another. And this is it! It comes together easy, rolls out wonderfully and is very flaky. We have given away about half the pies to family members and though they do give the pie as a whole a great rating, they rave about the crust. Look no further, this is an excellent pie crust recipe - even for beginners or those of us who "can't" make crusts!

Donna's Pound Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2012
Very nice, dense, moist pound cake. I don't buy treat and desserts for my kids lunches so I'm always looking for something different that I can make and freeze or divide up between their lunches and desserts for home. This was excellent!! I hesitate to make "homemade" goodies with boxed mixes but I was in a hurry and this really didn't taste boxed when it was done. My daughter doesn't like lemon, so I substituted the lemon extract with orange and it was a hit! Thanks!

Apple Crisp II

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2012
By far the best apple crisp recipe I've used. This topping was nice and had a bit of a crunch to it, whereas others I've tried in the past just sort of sat there on the top, did not brown or crisp up. I really think the secret here is how the entire recipe is put together. Here the apples go in, then water then sprinkle with the topping.. This recipe is far superior and tasted like the crisps I always remembered my Nana making and I could never replicate until now. Thank you, Diane for a great recipe!

Apple Brownies

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2012
Excellent taste and it was hard to stop at just one "test" square. However, I found it to be a little underbaked, but that is likely my problem. I used convection, which is 25 degrees lower than conventional, and I doubled the recipe and used a 9x13 pan. Even though the toothpick came out clean after an hour, I find the "brownie" a little limp and crumbly, although moist at the same time. I chopped the apples like others suggested, so maybe my chunks were too big. Again though, it is VERY good. I will just cut my apples smaller next time and perhaps bake another 10 minutes or so. Thanks for the recipe BakerJim!!

Sweet and Sour Sauce I

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2012
First time making this sauce. I was looking for a quick, easy, pineapple-free recipe and this was it. I made it, threw in some pre-baked meatballs I had in the freezer and served it over rice. Amazing! Thank you for this recipe!!

Orzo and Rice

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2012
I made this recipe exactly according to the directions and it turned out wonderfully! I will agree with some of the reviewers who say it's a tad bland, but there's an easy fix to that. You could even add some onion to this, or garlic powder while cooking. Great base recipe, or equally good salted and peppered at the table. We served it with pork chops w/mushroom gravy and poured a little over the Orzo and Rice after tasting (because it wouldn't be a fair review if I reviewed it with the gravy!) and it was quite good too :) Will make again - thank you C. Crane!

Easy Marinated Pork Tenderloin

Reviewed: Mar. 2, 2012
I really enjoyed this, as did my husband and my son. I used low-sodium soy sauce so I didn't have the saltiness other reviews were said to have. My daughter on the other hand didn't like it, but then she doesn't like anything, so I wouldn't factor that into my review. Will definitely make this again (and my daughter can have a peanut butter sandwich). Excellent!

Garlic Cheddar Chicken

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2012
This really should be a five star, but I'm giving it four for two reasons. My kids weren't thrilled with the garlic flavour, though they eat garlic in stuff all the time (weird kids) and I found I had WAY too much breadcrumb mixture left over, even after sprinkling most of it over top of the breasts in the pan. Overall though, I thought it was fabulous. Thank you for this recipe!!

Seasoned Potato Fries

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2012
My family is VERY picky when it comes to their fries. They usually have to be done in a dutch oven full of oil. However, being a new year and committing to a healthier lifestyle, I tried these Seasoned Potato Fries. I made the exactly the way the recipe said to, except I left out the italian seasoning, thinking if I was messing with my families fries, I'd better make them remotely close to "fried"...They were a huge hit!! Even my husband who feels it's blasphemous to BAKE fries said we should do our fries like this all the time :-) Thanks for making me a hero to my family LOL!!

Home Made Mayonnaise

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2012
This was excellent! We had chicken burgers for dinner and realized I had no mayo for the buns. I looked up this recipe and made it. It was so quick and while I was afraid it wouldn't taste like "real" mayonnaise, I was pleasantly surprised! It looked and tasted just like real mayonnaise. I think we'll be making our own from now on and save some money! Thanks for a great recipe!!

Double Chocolate Biscotti

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2011
I've never made biscotti in my life and shied away from it because I thought it was going to be difficult. I took the bull by the horns and decided to make this for our cookie plate for Christmas dinner. It was SO EASY! It cut like a dream using a serrated bread knife and though crunchy, it's not so crunchy as to crack a tooth like some biscotti I've eaten. Not over sweet, would be wonderful dipped in coffee or hot chocolate. So much for Christmas...I made them two days ago and they're gone. Guess I'm making more. Thanks for an easy and pretty fool-proof recipe!

Christmas Sandwich Cremes

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2011
Very light cookies and the filling isn't sickly sweet, however I found them a little small (should have used a larger cutter) and even though I pricked them liberally with a fork before baking, they puffed up and looked more like puff pastry. No worries though, they are still delicious.
