There’s a dawg in my kitchen!  There may be one in your kitchen, too.  Big, small, short, long, furry or not, those loyal companions usually make great kitchen helpers.  The kitchen floor can go a lot longer between cleanings with man’s best friend around.  Dishwas MORE

About this Cook
Just a mom. Two kids, husband, two dogs. Just trying to get my kids to eat healthy, balanced meals.
My favorite things to cook
Meat. I love meat! Okay, not just meat. Protein. I love protein. That's just weird.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I cook. They eat.
My cooking triumphs
When my kids' friends started telling their moms and other friends what a great cook I was.
My cooking tragedies
Salmon balls even the dog wouldn't eat. Left 'em outside overnight and a visiting skunk wouldn't touch them either. For real....

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup
This recipe hardly needs another positive review, but I thought I'd mention that this soup truly benefits from using chicken bouillon. I ran out of bouillon one time and thought I could get away with just using chicken broth and tinkering with the seasoning a little bit, but it just wasn't quite as good. This is one of the few recipes that I can follow exactly as printed and have it be absolute perfection.

Our Favorite Balsamic Vinaigrette
Let me confess that I love balsamic vinegar and could slurp it with a straw! That said, I used a Costco balsamic vinegar (not my higher end standard), and I found the dressing to have too much pucker factor. Perhaps with a different brand of vinegar it would have been fine? To compensate I added about 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise. That mellowed the whole thing out and made for a wonderful consistency. I think I'd do that again with any brand of balsamic.

Steak Soup
Dinty Moore! Frankly, my mom was a terrible cook. As a kid I remember being so excited when Dinty Moore stew was for dinner--because mom couldn't mess it up. She'd add a can of corn, and that was the best! I found this to be the soup version of this childhood memory. I used sirloin instead of top round and added 11 oz of V-8 in stead of tomato paste -- because my husband hates tomatoes. He loved it; I found it somewhat pedestrian but memory evoking. Comfort food, for sure! I'd make it again.
