By profession, I am a chocolatier and own my own fine chocolates company. (www.dorothyscandies.com) Both my husband and I come from a long line of perfectionists -- who, not accidentally -- are great cooks. My grandmother and mother were astounding cooks -- easily the best I've ever met. Grandma never used a recipe, cooked for great herds of people and never failed. Mom's cakes and pies were always the most desirable at the Church Bazaar. I like to think a lot of that rubbed off on me!
My favorite things to cook
Something new! No matter how much I cook, I want to try something new. Since my grandchildren are temporarily living with me, I'm trying to restrain myself -- using their faves. But I also think it's important to help them to develop their palates. I think a good palate is an important step in developing a curious and open mind.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Using fresh, locally grown vegetables in a healthy meal. My family always had their own garden. Now I don't garden, but I am an avid produce buyer and eater. I also try to take pride in keeping costs low -- part of that is not eating out often. I can serve my family a gourmet meal for less than it would cost at a fast food chain by shopping wisely.
My cooking triumphs
Several times I have cooked meals for our employees at work -- and everyone raves. I know. I know. I'm the boss -- but still -- I think they really enjoyed the meals.
My cooking tragedies
Heavens -- that's the great thing about cooking -- there are no "tragedies". Luckily, we have three dogs, who will help to "hide" the evidence!
