About this Cook
I'm a New Englander whose parents have Southern roots, so my sisters and I were the only ones we knew growing up familiar with hominy or scrapple (mmm... scrapple). I'm a proud omnivore and delight in trying anything and everything at least once.
My favorite things to cook
Pie. I make a mean pie. Sure, i cook, but MAN do I bake. I've always been a baking fool. Pies, cakes, cookies, and poor body images are my specialties. Not just sweet pies; if the crust is flaky you can't go wrong with a chicken pot pie.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Growing up, my family has an intimate relationship with the Baking soda Biscuit of all things. My father and I were locked in a decades long friendly competition to make the best ones, always using the same recipe. He was the reigning champion when he passed away, but I inherited his "magic biscuit fork" - the fork we'd always used to cut in shortening & which he swore was the secret to his success.
My cooking triumphs
I took first place in the "Other" division of a company picnic pie contest with my "PeanutButter Goodness" pie. (I'm sorry, that recipe's a secret) I decorated the "cutting cake" for my sister's wedding in 2006.
My cooking tragedies
I have a tendency to over-estimate my abilities, relying on sheer pluck to get me out of great big messes.

Authentic French Meringues
I LOVED the texture but next time I'll add flavoring. Mine tasted funny - like eating a spoonful of powdered sugar: sweet, but weird.

Caper Baked Chicken
I loved the flavor, but the sauce was thin and I ended up with chicken floating in a pan of flavorful buttery sauce, so next time I think I'll cook my rice right there in the pan to saok up all the yumminess!
