About this Cook
I'm a mom of three, I run a small cafe in our local natural foods coop, and I've worked in the restaurant business for more than half my life. I like food! I cook as localvore as I can, and bake probably way too much (although it seems I can always find someone to eat what I make :)) I often do not use recipes, but love to look at this site for inspiration. I love the Iron Chef idea of taking what's in my fridge and cupboard and making something delicious from it.
My favorite things to cook
veggies and grains in many incarnations anything in phyllo, savory or sweet
My favorite family cooking traditions
The kids love to help, and I love to cook with them! It doesn't really matter what we're making, although it's most often something baked and/or something with chocolate.
My cooking triumphs
Making Mickey's Favorite Cheesecake from allrecipes for my chef boss, with salted peanut caramel and chocolate ganache, for his birthday cake, and having him love it. Oh, and making his wedding cake as well (carrot cake)!
My cooking tragedies
There was the time it took 3 tries to get a batch of biscuits that were edible... forgetting the leavening or the salt is my most common mistake. or forgetting that last tray of cookies.

Catherine's Pickled Blueberries
I made this last year, and have been milking the jars until now, when I can make more! My favorite use is a nice big salad with the blueberries and other veggies with some chevre and a burger on top. It sounds like most reviewers think it should be jelly-like. Mine came out as mostly full berries with a slightly syrupy liquid. I love that--the liquid serves as salad dressing for my aforementioned favorite dinner. It may sound weird to some, but I encourage everyone to try this recipe--it's delicious!!

Red Quinoa and Avocado Salad
I want to comment on the cook's notes that say red and white quinoa taste the same--I disagree. Red quinoa has a nuttier, deeper flavor which is absolutely delicious. It's also quite a bit more expensive. I do think this recipe would work with either, but if the cost is not prohibitive, use the red quinoa for the flavor and color.

Restaurant-Style Italian Salad Dressing
A recipe for Italian dressing should NOT have Italian dressing in its ingredients list!!! This is not a recipe!
