Hello! My name is Ali. I am currently a college senior studying Nutrition and I aspire to go to culinary school and learn pastry arts after receiving my degree. I love the challenge of creating baked goods for EVERYONE, no matter what diet challenges and allergies they may have.
My favorite things to cook
My favorite things to make are generally desserts and baked goods. When I do cook, I always cook vegetarian dishes. Fresh ingredients and quick dishes are generally what I gravitate towards.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My love for baking and cooking definitely comes from my family. My mom would sit me on the kitchen counters when I was very little and let me watch her bake and cook and sometimes I'd get to stir and I would always get to taste! When I was about 4, my booty-length curly hair twirled around the beaters my mom was using to mix up a cake batter...chaos ensued, but I've been in love with food ever since those times. At holidays as well, my family would always get together to cook and bake and there would be about 15 desserts and TONS of food. We are a family of food lovers and home cooks/bakers.
My cooking triumphs
Thanks to the allrecipes website and other user comments and helpful advice, the dishes I am most known for are a vegetarian tortilla soup, a coconut cream pie, and the famous "Too Much Chocolate Cake." If you have not tried the cake, you need to as soon as possible. I do not like chocolate cake, but this is delicious. The cake is moist and so chocolatey it does not need ANY sort of frosting or glaze, my friends and family ask me to make this again and again. Of course I have my own recipes as well, but allrecipes is how I began to learn and experiment when I was in high school.
My own recipe that others ask me to make for very special occasions is a dark chocolate ganache tart with raspberries on top that are covered in a glaze of raspberry preserves, a little whipped cream, and a sprig of mint. :)
My cooking tragedies
My worst cooking tragedy was my first attempt at a vegan cupcake. I was baking salted, dark chocolate cupcakes with a vanilla icing and fresh raspberries on top. The recipe called for vegan butter, but when I went to the grocery store they were out of sticks of vegan butter so, my mom grabbed the vegan margarine not thinking about how that would alter the recipe of the cupcake. Needless to say, not only was the chocolate cupcake itself tasteless...it was also springy and rubbery in texture. The vegan icing also was so oily because of the margarine. The cupcake LOOKED amazing, but just altogether tasted so awful. Our guests were all close family and friends, so they were very kind, but at the end of the day I ended up throwing away a little more than half of the batch.
