About this Cook
I have 34 dogs - just gave away 2 puppies - down to 34 now. They range in age from 9 weeks to 19 years. Our old Siberian Husky is 19! She's kind of senile, just about blind and deaf, but still gets up, goes outside and eats good for being so old. After caring for all the dogs, I don't have time for much of anything else.
My favorite things to cook
Any type of pasta, home made chocolate cake, pound cake, oatmeal cookies from a recipe my mother got from her grandmother. Pork chops, chicken fried steak, and different things to make with hamburger that are quick to make.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I have a lot of recipes that were my great grandmother's. Flour is finer than it was in her day, so you have to use more, then adjust baking powder/soda for the extra flour.
My cooking triumphs
A yeast-raised coffee cake - a recipe that makes two large cakes. It has cinnamon swirls, a honey-nut filling, and icing with red and green cherries on top.
My cooking tragedies
Peeling potatoes when I was about 11 years old - had to make dinner for dad and younger sister, because mom worked nights. After I went through a large amount of potatoes in a week, my mom bought me a potato peeler because I was taking off half the potato with the knife! Still use a peeler, because I still can't peel with a knife!

Country Fried Steak and Milk Gravy
I make this a lot! But I add Cayenne Pepper, garlic powder, salt, black pepper and celery salt to Italian seasoned bread crumbs, dip the meat into beaten egg, then in bread crumbs. I also fry in lard - best in the world for frying! Serve with peppered country gravy. This is definitely a 5 star recipe!

Hobo Pie
We always called these Pudgy Pies. They are wonderful made with biscuit dough and filled with fresh raspberries or strawberries. Refrigerated biscuits would work well, too, I am sure. I have made them with biscuit dough, cinnamon sugar and raisins - great little coffee cakes. Whatever you call them , they are definitely a 5 star recipe.
