Making a Difference, One Bite at a Time

Farmer's Market Week 1 and 2
Feb. 3, 2013 3:02 pm
Last week, I went to the farmer's market by my office and found that it wasn't there!  So I ended up getting produce from Whole Foods and selected items that were labeled "locally grown".  Surprisingly, it was cheaper than I expected!

My pick for last week was "savoy cabbage".  It looked interesting and reminded me of napa cabbage, something I ate a lot of growing up.  I read online that savoy cabbage is tougher so I ended up just stir frying it with green onions and garlic, added some salt and then covered it at medium heat until it softened up.  I probably cooked all the nutrition out of it as well but oh well!  It ended up pretty tasty and even my husband liked it (he is not a cabbage fan).

This week, I went to the farmer's market in downtown El Segundo (also very close to my office).  I bought some fresh bread, tangerines and fuji apples.  My veggie picks for the week were green beans and zucchini.  I found a recipe called Emerald Green Risotto which has both these ingredients.  I just came back from the grocery store to get the additional ingredients for this recipe.  I'm heading out to a Superbowl party tonight so I won't be cooking but I will try to make it later this week.  I can't wait!

About Me
I am a wife and a new mom. My husband and I both work full time and are also very involved with our church so our schedules fill up fast! I enjoy cooking but because of my schedule, I need to find easy and quick recipes. I also enjoy watching TV and scrapbooking, but these days when I have free time, I usually sleep!
My favorite things to cook
Anything that is fast and delicious! I love slow cooker recipes because the are quick to prepare and ready by the time we get home!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom is a great cook and always made Chinese food for us growing up. I tried to learn from her growing up but still need to call her once in awhile for tips.
My cooking triumphs
I don't have one yet. I'm hoping that one day, I will have the guts to host a Thanksgiving dinner and make every single dish.
My cooking tragedies
Too many to list! I grew up eating everything on my plate so even if something doesn't turn out perfect, I try to finish it. But there are times when the food is just too disgusting and I have to throw it out!
