Chef John's Buttermilk Biscuits

Reviewed: May 28, 2013
Did half wheat and half all-purpose flour. It didn't rise very much but they still had a great texture, taste, and overall quality. I also used Kefir instead of buttermilk. A+

Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Reviewed: Nov. 11, 2010
I microwaved my potatoes, then peeled off the soft skins with my fingers. (Let them cool down first!) I also skipped the electric mixer and hand-mashed them. They were still tasty!

I made them exactly to recipe, and I think they're great. Also, they were very easy to prepare.

Orange Beef-Style Tofu Stir-Fry

Reviewed: Jun. 17, 2010
Great sauce recipe! And the tofu turned out well. I agree with the reviewer who said not to skimp on the cornstarch coating. HOWEVER, I have made this dish twice now and have had better luck thickening the sauce in a separate pan than trying to thicken it in the veg pan as instructed.

Red Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 17, 2010
Great, colorful presentation. Okay flavor, somewhat lacking. I encourage anybody making this dish to add their own pizazz to it.

Luscious Lima Bean Soup

Reviewed: May 30, 2010
I was so wrapped up scarfing it down that I forgot to take a picture, as I normally would. Yum! My boyfriend liked it, too.

Noodles Romanoff

Reviewed: May 28, 2010
I thought this was excellent. Yes, it is sour-creamy. If you don't like sour cream, this is probably not for you. I used reduced fat sour cream, and it still tasted great. I added (frozen) peas at the end to add a little color to it. My boyfriend really liked it too. Note: I am going to post a picture. If the noodles look funny it is because this was also my first attempt at making egg noodles from scratch!

Toffee Bars III

Reviewed: May 26, 2010
I added an egg, and they were good to go. The dough is not super-sweet by itself, so the flavor of the chips and/or nuts you add really stands out. I used half semi-sweet chocolate chips and half butterscotch chips.

Melting Moments II

Reviewed: May 26, 2010
These are not sweet cookies, but they are good as tea cookies. One reviewer suggested using parchment in the baking pan - good idea, worked out nicely.

French Silk Frosting

Reviewed: May 26, 2010
I had never made frosting before. It turned out really well, nice and creamy - no gritty texture. Really easy to make, too. I used cocoa powder instead of squares, no problem. I'm not sure how much I used, maybe something more than a tablespoon. I also added a little extra milk as suggested by other reviewers.

Basic Hard-Cooked Eggs

Reviewed: May 21, 2010
Perfect. I didn't actually let them come to a full boil, but if I had they would have been perfect. I posted a picture of my slightly undercooked eggs. They still worked well for making deviled eggs, though.

Deviled Eggs

I've never made deviled eggs before. This recipe was easy and tasted good. I followed the recipe exactly. My boyfriend really liked them, too. Before he wasn't even sure if he liked deviled eggs! :)

Beets in Orange Sauce

Reviewed: May 21, 2010
These were easy to make and turned out well. I used half the recipe for the sauce and one full can of pre-sliced, no salt added beets. I put canned mandarin orange pieces in right before serving to add another color. Yum! I used a little less sugar than suggest per the advice of other reviewers, but I think the amount the recipe calls for would have been fine, too.

MMMMM... Brownies

Reviewed: May 20, 2010
Yes, they're good enough. I'm not a very experienced baker, and they came out fine. I halved the amounts but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. Another reviewer was saying to use your best chips... good idea because you can really taste them.

Egg in a Boat

Reviewed: May 19, 2010
Easy and delicious gets 5 stars. I followed the advice from other reviews and turned the heat down when I added the egg. Low temp worked well, no burning. I used honey wheat bread and toasted the extra circle in the toaster oven. I lightly oiled the pan instead of using butter. This is great for a light breakfast with a piece of fruit on the side, will make again. I posted a picture of my final product, too. :)
