Sopa de Fideos: Mexican Noodle Soup

I adore Mexican food. The flavors, the aroma, everything about it is wonderful. When eating out at a Mexican restaurant, they would bring out this appetizer cup of noodle soup that was so simple, yet incredibly tasty. 


I later found out it was called Sopa de Fideos. Fideos are a short, thin noodle, much like a miniature spaghetti strand. When I learned how to make this soup last year, I was actually quite amazed at just how easy it was!

There are very few ingredients required, some canned tomatoes, chicken broth, and some onion, garlic, and cilantro. You can pick up a bag of fideos in the Mexican food aisle of your grocery store, they look like this:

This is such a simple and tasty soup, I urge you to try it. It's great for an appetizer, or a quick lunch. And really wonderful if you are feeling under the weather too!

This is a great blog! I buy those little bags of pasta all the time...often times I find them on sale 3 for $1. Great blog, Amanda!

I love this soup too...never used a recipe though...just made basic tomato soup and added the herbs and pasta. I like making my own because I can add less pasta and that way, not eat so much of it!

My family and I love fideo! Sometimes I manage to screw it up but mostly it comes out good. I like to add dried onion pieces to it too. MMMMM Thanks for telling everyone else how good this humble dish is:)

Hi Amanda! I love fideo its so simple. I make mine a little different, but basically the same. I also love to throw some leftover pork or chicken peices in it and top it with sour cream and cojita cheese. I love baking, especially cookies and cakes. :) I love cooking too, but I like to experiment, which can occasionally mean take out! ;)
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up in the convenience food era. My parents were divorced and I was a latch key kid. There weren't a whole lot of home cooked meals in my childhood, but lots of packaged and frozen goods. I try to make dinner every night for my family, though sometimes it's take out due to sports activities, etc. I'm envious of those that have their grandmother's recipes, I don't have anything like that.
My cooking triumphs
i've created a few recipes of my own, one I even won a contest for :) I love experimenting and finding new ways to combine flavors. I feel triumphant every time I bring something to my neighbors, they always give me rave reviews!
My cooking tragedies
I try to prepare whatever I can early in the day, so that the hectic afternoon is less... well, hectic! I tend to be pretty frugal, so I'm always pantry diving. I also menu plan every week, it saves me from A) running to the store in the middle of the week and B) getting take out.
