Make your own taco seasoning mix

Back in 2001, I found a recipe for taco seasoning mix in a book of master mixes. Prior to that, I had always used envelopes of taco seasoning that you get at the grocery store, but all that changed after making my own. I haven't bought a taco seasoning packet since.

There's nothing quite like making your own seasoning mix. You know there aren't any preservatives, and you control the ingredients. So if you prefer it a bit on the hot side, you can adjust the ingredients to suit your tastes.

When I make the seasoning mix, I always set out about 5 or 6 small bowls first. Then I measure out the ingredients into each bowl, making several batches as once. I pour each batch into a zipper sandwich bag, wrap them in foil, and store them in the cabinet for later. This way I have my own taco seasoning packets all ready to go, which is perfect when my 18 year old son makes dinner. :)

You can get the homemade taco seasoning recipe at Amanda's Cookin'. If you like, my recipe for homemade salsa is also available on that page.

I am going to your house for dinner, Yumm. The photos are making me drool.I really need to make my own spice mix too, like the dry ranch dressing. It is really expensive. Great blog.:)

Thanks so much ladies! I hope you try it, I honestly never turned back afterward. I even taught my kids how to make it.

I love homemade salsa and your recipe looks delicious. I also have been making my own taco seasoning since I found AR, it's better and much lower sodium. Thanks!

Thanks! I'm always happy to find something I can make from scratch. So much better :)

About Me
My favorite things to cook
I love baking, especially cookies and cakes. :) I love cooking too, but I like to experiment, which can occasionally mean take out! ;)
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up in the convenience food era. My parents were divorced and I was a latch key kid. There weren't a whole lot of home cooked meals in my childhood, but lots of packaged and frozen goods. I try to make dinner every night for my family, though sometimes it's take out due to sports activities, etc. I'm envious of those that have their grandmother's recipes, I don't have anything like that.
My cooking triumphs
i've created a few recipes of my own, one I even won a contest for :) I love experimenting and finding new ways to combine flavors. I feel triumphant every time I bring something to my neighbors, they always give me rave reviews!
My cooking tragedies
I try to prepare whatever I can early in the day, so that the hectic afternoon is less... well, hectic! I tend to be pretty frugal, so I'm always pantry diving. I also menu plan every week, it saves me from A) running to the store in the middle of the week and B) getting take out.
