Polvorones de Canele (Cinnamon Cookies)

Reviewed: May 5, 2010
I brought these in to work for Cinco de Mayo. One of my coworkers, who *never* gives out compliments, said three in a row and then asked me if I'd make some more! These were easy to make and didn't require any special ingredients. I agree with an earlier comment that their taste improves when they cool. Another one of my coworkers, who originates from Mexico, couldn't help but correct the title though... according to him, it should be "canela". Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe!

Quiche

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2010
I loved how fast and easy this quiche was to make! I haven't tried freezing it yet, but might double the recipe next time and freeze one of them for a fast and easy meal. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that it was a touch bland for me. I might add some onions or other ingredients to it next time -- that said, my toddler ate it up!!

Spinach Quiche

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2010
This recipe was wonderful! I made this quiche for a friend who was visiting and is vegetarian. Much to my surprise and delight, the rest of my family raved about it as well! I ended up sharing the recipe with my friend and am looking forward to making it again. I almost always make recipes exactly as they are written when trying them for the first time. However, I agree with others here that there is too much butter. I ended up scooping half of it out of my saute pan before continuing onwards. Next time I'll start with just 1T and add more as seems necessary. I also substituted regular feta for the garlic and herb variety (my store doesn't carry it).

Crisp Little Lemon Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2010
These cookies were easy and quick to make and had decent flavor - however it was a bit "artificial" for our tastes. I'm sure that had more to do with the brand of cake mix that we used than this recipe. I may try again with a different brand.

Donut Muffins

Reviewed: Sep. 13, 2010
Yummy!! Hubby rated them a 4 of 5, which is pretty spectacular since he isn't a huge fan of nutmeg. Instead of dipping them in butter, I simply put the warm muffins into a freezer bag with the suger/cinnamon mix and shook. Dipping them in butter sounds wonderfully delicious, though. I might have to try it that way the next time I make them. Thanks for a delicous recipe!

Hamburger Vegetable Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2010
Hubby wanted veggie soup, which is how I stumbled across this recipe. I don't think I would have noticed it otherwise as I am *NOT* a vegetable soup fan. That said, I really liked this soup!! Hubby liked it too, and we even got our toddler to eat some. I usually make a recipe as stated the first time, but since we had some cabbage to use up, I tossed it in. We will be making this recipe again!

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2010
This is a wonderfully easy recipe! I haven't had roasted pumpkin seeds since I was a kid, and really enjoyed the "old fashioned" taste that this recipe provided. Thanks!

Tofu-Stuffed Lasagna Rolls

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2010
I followed this recipe as written in order to give it a fair review, with the exception of layering the ingredients like a traditional lasagna instead of bothering with the rolls. It was a bit bland for my husband's and my tastes but it gets serious kudos because our toddler ate it. We "rescued" the meal by adding garlic powder and decided that if I ever make it again, it'd be improved by adding onion, garlic, mushrooms and additional sauce.

Simple White Cake

Reviewed: Nov. 7, 2010
I made this cake in cupcake form as a "test run" for my daughter's birthday later this month. Since I was interested in having a good tasting cake, we taste-tested without frosting. YUMMY! I'm very impressed! The cupcakes came out fairly moist and fluffy. My husband inhaled two of them, and I have to admit that I'm guilty of the same! Our toddler loves them. As other reviewers have commented, this is a very sweet recipe. I might try reducing the sugar next time I make it - or just eat them without frosting!

Devil's Food Cake I

Reviewed: Nov. 14, 2010
I made cupcakes from this recipe, baking them 15-20 minutes or until the tops sprang back and a toothpick came out clean. Previous reviewers commented that their cupcakes sank in the middle - mine didn't but were lovely and puffed on top. Another reviewer also commented that the cake dried out the next day. I kept my cupcakes in a cake keeper (so lightly covered) and they were nice and moist this morning. Hubby did agree with a reviewer who stated that there wasn't much chocolate taste to this recipe, but I thought it was lovely. I didn't frost the cupcakes as we were taste-testing the recipe itself, but chocolate frosting might have changed his mind! Overall, this was a great recipe. I will probably make it again!

Slider-Style Mini Burgers

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2010
Unfortunately my family wasn't wowed by this recipe. However, it was easy, fast, and a fun change from regular hamburgers or sloppy joes.

Orange Cake

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2010
In an effort to find just the right cake for an upcoming event, I tried three different recipes from this site. I didn't frost or glaze any of the cakes, including this one, since we just wanted to evaluate the cake. My official taste-tester (Hubby) declared this one the winner! The only change I made was to use orange extract instead of lemon. I baked cupcakes, which took 25-30 minutes at 325 F. I'm looking forward to making this one again!

Orange Pecan French Toast

Reviewed: Nov. 21, 2010
Oh my... I'm glad that I tried this recipe! The flavor was lovely, and Hubby wants it again even though I made a bit of a mess out of it. For the record, do NOT use regular sandwich bread (I didn't have any crusty bread on hand). Not surprisingly, it comes out mushy. I am planning on making this again, but with crusty bread!

Tammy's Tempting Cheese Ball

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2010
Oh my goodness -- this cheese ball is nearly addictive! I made it as directed, using full-fat ingredients as recommended by other reviewers in order to get the ball to form. I don't have a mixer, so wasn't able to get the cream cheese mixture perfectly smooth, but it was fine nonetheless. To "chop" the nuts, I put them into a freezer bag and pounded with a meat mallet until I got the size pieces that I wanted. Some reviewers commented that this recipe was too salty, but I thought that it was just right - I'm sure it depends on what brand of ranch mix you use. There might be some lower sodium varieties out there. I also served the cheese with lower sodium crackers. Although we liked this recipe as is, I think I'll try adding some bacon next time. Thanks for an easy and tasty recipe!

Cocoa Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2010
Yummy! Hubby had a cookie craving and was about to dash off to the store to buy some when I suggested making some at home instead. We had all the ingredients on hand for this recipe, though we decided to forgo the raisins. I might try doubling the cocoa powder next time and/or adding chocolate chips. Delicious! Thanks for the recipe.

Quick Quiche

Reviewed: Mar. 12, 2011
Wonderfully easy and a cinch to throw together! It came out lovely and fluffy - almost like a souffle! I usually make the recipe exactly as written the first time in order to give it a fair review, but this time I made some changes based on the ingredients that I had on hand (e.g. ham instead of bacon, other veggies, etc.). As myrite suggested in the introduction, it's an easy recipe to adapt to your own personal tastes!

Baked Teriyaki Chicken

Reviewed: May 14, 2011
Fabulous recipe!!! I loved the teriyaki sauce recipe, but I prepared my meal on the stove top. I made half the volume of sauce and poured it over ~1 lb of chicken breast that was cut into bite-sized pieces. I let this marinade overnight in the fridge. The next day, I poured off the marinade and cooked the chicken in a non-stick pan (no oil added). The chicken was very tasty but a bit tough when prepared this way. Just for fun, I made another half-volume of the sauce and poured it into the pan after the chicken had cooked through, then thickened it with a bit of cornstarch and water. WARNING: When cooked this way, the sauce is a bit intense. Next time I'll leave the sauce off, try reducing the amount of vinegar, or I'll actually bake the chicken as directed by this recipe. :)

Brownie Crackles

Reviewed: May 15, 2011
Tasty! Several other reviewers have complained about the batter being difficult to roll. It is sticky, but there is an easy technique that will make rolling it a cinch. First, drop some cookie dough into a bowl containing the confectioner's sugar. Scoop up some of the sugar with your fingers and sprinkle it on top of the dough. Now pick up the sugar-coated dough and roll in your hands. It won't be sticky any more. I chose to flatten my cookies a bit before baking, and it made for a lovely presentation. Update: I took some of these cookies into work today. My coworkers *devoured* them! I'll definitely be making them again.

Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles

Reviewed: May 17, 2011
Snickerdoodles are one of my favorite cookies, so I had to try this recipe. It was easy to make - in fact, my 2.5 year old helped me. It was her very first baking experience! This recipe makes a large amount of cookies. I ended up with 5 dozen.

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

Reviewed: May 19, 2011
Hubby and I both liked this recipe. The only change I made was to use cream of mushroom instead of cream of chicken soup. The next time I make this recipe, I think I'll use lower-sodium ingredients as it came out just a bit too salty. That said, it still tasted fabulous, and I'll definitely make it again.
