As some of you know (and anyone who knows me personally) I have never liked to cook, Growing up my mother was just the same, so for her to show me how was nothing I ever had to worry about. She (my mother) wanted it quick fast an cleaned up, she grew up in a family where she became head cook an bottle wash at a very early age, so she hated it. I was the tom-boy being outside an mucking a horse stall was heaven on earth to me, anything to do with my horse or outside with dad was fine with me. So then i get married (dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn)  what you mean what is for dinner? hahaha I was lost, so it was hamburger helper or boxed mac an cheese and even better FROZEN BURRITOES because i could put them in the  oven an just wait until timer goes off WHAT A CONCEPT  I was hooked! well one day a few months ago (literally.....no joke) I am surfing the net an came across "all recipe.com" boredom took me to it!  I seen a recipe for mac an cheese read it, stared at it...an thought...hmm why not! So i stopped at the grocery store an bought the ingredients went home an started making it. My daughter walks in from school an says "mom what are you doing?" I said cooking she said " why?" ( pathetic huh) I said "Lynn wilson factory (frozen burritoes) burned to the ground " she said "WHAT?"  I told her I was just kidding (yes i have a dry sense of humor but its who I am!) so dinner comes along an my daughters an hubby eat the mac an cheese Joe (my husband) says " that was the best babe!" followed by my girls saying " mom, this is awesome thanks" so needless to say the cooking bug bit me and I have been going crazy sense. Jump to 3 weeks ago...My sister dana (is a hater for cooking as well" she calls me on the phone an says "I have a pork roast what do i do with it?" amazed that she asked me, I told her what I thought. she called me through out the day for pointers and about 6pm I sent a text asking how it turned out. she text me back an said " its amazing and I wish mom was here to see this she would be so proud of you" I text her back an said " d (her name is Dana but i call her d) you made it, you did great" she then text back " You are amazing and thanks for being a great teacher " ........good heck people I consider myself a tough bird an usually am...That day I got up an walked outside because I didnt want anyone to see  me crying like an idiot. So I am sure this blog has bored most but I just wanted to show ya'll what "AR" has done for me...gave me a lot more then just great recipes...

BTW, if you want to jazz up those frozen burritos, add some salsa and top with cheese. I call them LunchLady enchiladas! My kids Favorite! I stole the recipe from school! Yep, I wear a hairnet! LOL

Nice story. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking". It is an excellent book for beginners and experts. The equipment, techniques and methods along with the recipes will further inspire and motivate your cooking journey. Also, if you haven't seen the movie Julie and Julia...I highly recommend it! The movie was created from a blogger who wrote about her experience as she made every recipe in the aforementioned JC book. Best of luck with your new found cooking journey. As I've always said "if you can read, you can cook".

Wow!! I agree with Patty Cakes, one minute you are asking what a blog is, I nip out for a few errands and now I have little tears reading this! I absolutely love passing on my love of cooking to friends and family whether it's in pointers or sharing my table. You may have unburied a real talent for cooking by taking a chance with your first real Mac & Cheese. Who knows what great talent you have unburied by taking on a blog! Think I will always remember that you and I were *Blog Virgins* on the same day!! lol

Yaaay Gerri-Lee!! Great blog. As for cooking in general...once you start, you can't go back. I can almost see the gears turning in your head, wondering what to make next. Not only have you caught the bug and infected your sister, but if I remember correctly, you've got your daughter in on the act. Just wait until you start giving advice to other cooks. :) I'm looking forward to your next blog and your next creation!

WTG!! gerri! isn't it fun to make something and folks just about fight over it? i love folks asking my opinions/pointers for making something. i do gotta tell you though, it can be frustrating to have to make the same thing the same way. ohh, another thing...i love making boo-boos just experpimenting, sometimes good stuff, sometimes window caulking. i still can't bake. i don't really have an interest in it, but veggies, soups and italian...i can get the job done :) nice blog sweetie, welcome to the best cooking site and a terrific group of great cooks!

That is so sweet of you! Glad you are growing into a love of cooking. Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's not, but sure makes life more enjoyable to eat something that's not out of a box or a bag. And to know you made it yourself!

Gerri-lee, great first time out! My story is similar. My Mama was not a good cook at all. So, I never really learned to cook. Also, I was busy raising a family and really didn't have time either. When I became semi-retired, I found all Recipes.com and this wonderful group of cooks(they probably don't know this) have helped me become so much better at cooking. The kicker to all this is that I LOVE to cook. I never knew that cooking could be so much fun and rewarding. Welcome to AR and I look forward to reading more from you. Thanks for sharing.

Great blog! Sounds like you are really getting into the swing of cooking... and blogging!! I never had time to learn to cook either when I was younger - I was too busy being a tom boy as well. Then, like you, I got married. What? We can't go to Mom's every night for dinner??!! We survived on Banquet Frozen Chicken and instant mashed potatoes with corn. All I knew how to make for the first year was meatloaf and chocolate chip cookies. My husband is always happy to say I learned to cook and I learned to do it well. Can't wait to read your next blog.

well have recently just gotten into the cooking thing,im from a long line of ppl who hate to cook lol but i have always enjoyed it just never thought i was any good at it. Thanksgiving for the most part we have kept this holiday to just us four (husband an two daughters) an everyone picks a fav side. This year i cant wait to try new things.
My cooking triumphs
there has been a lot of them lately ( I SO AM NOT KIDDING!) sweet an sour chicken, sour cream coffee cake hot wings, soup its awesome (although the hubby has gained 18lbs in 8weeks so im thinking my next recipe request will be low cal) im having a lot of fun with this.
My cooking tragedies
Carrot cake...it fell i was so disappointed maybe once i get to know some of you better i might break down an tell the raw chicken story (mercy its just awful)
