About this Cook
I was born in Cuba and immigrated to the US when I was 9. I love my Cuban cooking roots. I began cooking whole family dinners at age 12 and haven't stopped since. I love trying out different ingredient combinations and sometimes my experiments actually tasted delicious!
My favorite things to cook
I love baking, and using my crock pot. I love entertaining and exposing my friends to international foods such as Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and European.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite cooking tradition is my family's Cuban Christmas dinner. It consists of Roast Shoulder Picnic Pork marinated in lots of garlic, cumin, and sour orange juice accompanied by a black bean soup white rice and cassava root with flavorful lemon garlic dressing and salad. I currently live on the other coast from my family so making this meal every Christmas brings me home in a cooking sense!
My cooking triumphs
My most excellent cooking triumph is making an award winning chocolate turtle cheesecake using a recipe I found right here at Allrecipes but giving it my little twist by adding a cardboard cutout turtle head and legs making it look like a turtle!
My cooking tragedies
too many to list! since sometimes my experimenting with foods can truly turn tragic!

Gulab Jamun
Recipe for dough does not bind, it is runny and not able to form balls from it. I agree with Effie, add more dry milk until able to form balls. I tried adding more flour but it made it too doughy. Next time I will try more dry milk. They should be spongy not doughy.

Mimi's Smoked Salmon Chowder
Just finished making a batch with some smoked salmon that a friend's husband caught and that I was lucky to receive. This is a flavorful chowder that's hearty enough for a rainy Seattle day. I did add three bacon strips chopped up very small, in with the butter and olive oil and the other ingredients at the beginning and it really gave a little more boost to the already flavorful broth. Very easy to make too!
