About this Cook
Stay at home mom with 2 young children so everything I make or try has to be Kid Friendly or Approved, as my reviews will state. I love/enjoy cooking and experimenting and teaching my girls how to cook. I find myself more often than not watching Food Network and taking mental notes on recipes and trying out on the family. I alway secretly dream of being on a cooking challenge show with secret ingredients. How fun would that be?
My favorite things to cook
I really like cooking mexican food dishes. I find it easy to prepare and alter to my families taste. BBQing is also a favorite past time. Living in Southern California grilling is pretty much a year around way of life.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Favorite family traditions is Thanksgiving and Christmas time. I can not exactly day "Dinner" for either and both are considered full on events in my family. Days and days of preparation from home made cooked gifts, traditional cookies, candies and breads to the feast it self. Nothing makes me more happier at the holidays than seeing how much my family and loved one enjoy this occasion with good festive fellowship and food. It warms me heart and soul.
My cooking triumphs
Anything that my very picky 5 year old will eat. Seriously, she will actually one day just love my cooking and the next will not touch a thing except Fruity Pebbles with a dash of milk. And if their happens to be one, just one item on her plate she does not like, the entire plate of food is no good. It's contaminated. She's 5 people and knows the word contaminated. Who is this kid? She must get it from her father! :)
My cooking tragedies
Many many years ago, in a very small 3 story townhouse with my very happy groom, I tried to be domesticated. He had this love affair with meat loaf. Sure, my mom made meat loaf but be a product of the 80's the word meat and loaf were in reference to a Singer, not an actual product of substance. He also like the way his Momma made it, with bacon on top, which I was encouraged to try. Well, I didnt know at the time that putting bacon on top ment 2 or 3 slices, I put about a pound. The end result was meatloaf grease soup that I refused to let him eat. I do believe that was the night I had my first taste of sushi as we went out to eat.

Best Spanish Rice
This was by far the simplest - tastiest - super easy Spanish rice on the planet! I have tried time and time again and they were too salty, scorched on the bottom, no Spanish flavor. I could go on but will save you the boredom. THIS one is easy and did NOT scorch. I did use my Dutch oven on the stove top and stirred quite a bit. *** I added more onion than called for just because I don't want my husband near me and food at the same time (j/k) I ? Onion. I used an authentic quality chunky flavorful salsa - Pass on the Pace - And a Must Must Must - ADD CUMIN! Cumin is a basic Mexican spice that you will thank me for later. Also. It's awesome the next day.

Jan's Pretzel Dogs
4 stars only because it was difficult. It truly is one of the best tasting Pretzel dog recipes, however, very labor intensive and the boiling was difficult, the dog would slide out or the pretzel would unwrap. I did use the left over dough, as it made a lot for a family of 4, I made regular pretzels, poured the boiling water in a glass pie dish and dropped the pretzels into that, much easier that fishing for them in my large pot. May try again, but will dip them in the pie dish not the pot.
