I'm a southern girl who grew up in western NC. I had no interest in cooking growing up....my daddy always called my sister "the cook" and the only thing I helped with in the kitchen was washing dishes. After I got married, I taught myself to cook using recipes from magazines and cookbooks. My cookbook collection is still growing....there are at least 400 in our house. I love cooking, but don't have much time for it because I work fulltime during the week and our family is on the go a lot. I am married to my sweetheart and together we have 3 daughters....2 grown with families of their own and one who is a college student. I enjoy this website and have made several dishes that I found here for family and friends....they are very appreciative!
My favorite things to cook
Cakes, cheesecakes and homemade ice cream. I will cook almost anything, but these are the things that I get the most compliments for.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I don't usually cook together....our styles are very different. But we grocery shop together. And if one cooks, the other usually does the clean up. We split the holidays. Thanksgiving is mine because I want the same turkey and dressing that my mama cooked. On Christmas morning, my husband and our sons-in-law head to the kitchen and cook a huge southern breakfast with every kind of breakfast meat you can think of. I am allowed to go in there to scramble the eggs and bake the biscuits. After breakfast, everyone can go their own way to their in-laws for dinner....and we are happy to stay here and not have to think about eating anything else until late evening!
My cooking triumphs
I won a chili contest at our church a few years ago. And I'm known for the cakes and ice cream that I make. But the biggest triumphs are when I make my family happy with something I've made. When I husband tells me over and over how good a particular dish is that makes me feel good. And when our youngest daughter, who is a picky eater, tells her friends that something I made was "sooo good!"....that's a big heartwarmer for me.
My cooking tragedies
I'm very careful in choosing recipes and haven't had many disasters. Only 2 come to mind and they both involve cakes. I baked a pound cake for work and was carrying it to the car...I dropped it and the cake ended up all over the driveway. The dog loved it. The other fiasco was when I tried to bake a butternut cherry cake that my husband had been asking for. I had only made it once before and he loved it. When I baked it the second time, something went terribly wrong. I took it out of the oven, tested it with a toothpick and everything looked fine. I let it cool on the rack and when I turned it out on the plate, the inside was still mostly liquid and poured out everywhere. My sweetie still asks for that cake....and I still haven't tried that one again.
