I made my second attempt at the Artoo cake this weekend. This time I made a double-batch of cake batter, so when it baked it poofed up over the rim, then I cut down the back to make it flat. I also decorated differently. I put in a thin laying of frosting, thin enough to still clearly see the grooves made by the pan. Then I used pastry tubes with icing I colored myself to decorate it. The result came out looking much nicer. Although I think a 1.5 batch of batter would have sufficed.

It was lots of fun and plenty tasty. It makes me want to get more into shaped cakes. The problem is making it when I know I'll have folks around to help me *eat* it. My little family doesn't go through cake that quickly.

You have great talent, that is detail oriented cake! What kind of cake did you make?

Way cool! I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan (my KitchenAid mixer is named Darth Beater LOL!), so anything depicting one of the characters is awesome to me. Great job on the decorating!!

Thanks. It was just a standard yellow cake with colored vanilla frosting.
