After a long work week, cooking is a great way for me to accomplish something tangible (and delicious) in a short amount of time. It's often how I deal with stress- all that chopping and mixing. I try to set aside most of a day each weekend to cook for the upcoming week. I spend my evenings reading cookbooks right alongside reading novels!
My favorite things to cook
Everything I cook is vegetarian and I do my best to cook vegan. I love it when I have time to make things with phyllo dough or wanton wrappers. I love to cook food from all over the world but I'm not crazy about boring stir flys and am always looking for more exciting ways to prepare Asian cusine- curries are at the top of the list!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Digging out the good ol' betty crocker cookbook from the 50s for our christmas cookie bake-a-thon. It's been on my mom's cookbook shelf forever and the pages are torn and faded. We also have a traditional family recipe that is passed down through "hand-on" training. There is no written recipe- we can pronounce it but have no idea how to spell it! It's eastern european and has potatos, flour and sauerkraute. My mom has tried for years to perfect a recipe that can be written down but the amounts are never the same twice- you just have to make it by feel. It is superb smothered in butter....mmmmm
