About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
dinner for my sweetie
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother cooked from the school of cream of mushroom soup-bound, cornflake-topped tuna noodle casseroles. Enough to make you teach yourself to cook at age 11.
My cooking triumphs
Muffins muffins and more muffins. Also russian style beef borscht, jewish chicken soup, and grainy pilafs.
My cooking tragedies
Puff pastry enroute to a Beef Wellington entree / Napoleons for dessert meal that was indeed my Waterloo. It was a tough slab of leaves more like shale than pastry. And try as I might, I am no more successful than anyone else at reproducing my grandmother's incredibly delicious apple pie.

Basic British Scones
I made a slightly denser, whole wheat, bran and real butter version (see custom versions). This recipe as-is is really good but i would encourage cutting in the shortening as for pie crust, and using butter. Coconut oil is a good vegan substitute for butter. Also standard recipe took my oven 15 minutes.

Deep Dark Old Recipe Bran Muffins
a great start to a recipe. I solved the dryness problem that was encountered by so many reviewers by substituting one 16-ounce can of pumpkin for the equivalent volume of buttermilk, and they were extremely moist. Also I used oat flour and doubled the molasses and tossed in 1/3 cup of bittersweet chocolate mini-chips. Yummy!
