Grandma's Green Bean Casserole

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2011
This dish was a big hit at Thanksgiving this year and two out of four at the dinner don't even usually enjoy green bean casserole (or "GBC" as they disdainfully called it). However, I persuaded them this was not ordinary "GBC" and they both found that they enjoyed the dish so much, it was the first of the leftovers to get completely gobbled up! Two thumbs way up for this dish. As for alterations, I used one cup of Colby Jack and one cup of Cheddar since I enjoy the combination of the two better then just Cheddar. Will definitely be making this again and again.

Sweet Green Bean Bundles

Reviewed: May 2, 2013
Had a little trouble having the bundles stay together but I think wrapping them tighter with less beans in them would do the trick. I used fresh green beans that I steamed for this. Everyone seemed to enjoy these - though not quite as much as I did, probably because I'm the big green bean fan in the house. But even my picky husband had a few bundles without me forcing him, so it's a great way to sneak some vegetables in for those who hate anything green. Better to eat beans in bacon than no beans at all!

Sylvia's Ribs

Reviewed: May 2, 2013
Amazing. I was apprehensive of all the ketchup but followed the recipe to a t and was very happily surprised by the outcome. This has been my favorite recipe for ribs yet and I'm intending on bbqing some chicken wings with this sauce recipe I loved it so much.

Yummy Lemon Salmon Burgers

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2012
This one's definitely a keeper. I made my own breadcrumbs and Italian seasoning, unfortunately ran out of lemon juice (got about one and a half tablespoons into the mix, didn't realize I was almost out), used freshly caught salmon from Lake Michigan and baked the patties instead of frying them (five patties took about 13 minutes, flipping them halfway). I also did not make the mayo spread because I utterly loathe mayo and used sour cream instead. The sour cream was good but I think I will use tartar sauce in the future. Other than those changes, I followed the recipe pretty closely and really enjoyed the results. The two tablespoons lemon juice probably would have been perfect as I am a huge lover of citrus flavors in fish but the one and a half is noticeable, yet subtle, for those who are not that into lemon. These patties have been added to my top three favorite recipes for salmon. Thank you MELDS for sharing.

My favorite recipe for baking salmon that I have found so far. The proportions are just right.

I don't eat devilled eggs but my mother, who thinks that eggs are God's greatest gift to man, loved these.

Lentil Soup with Lemon

Wow! Prepared the soup as the recipe's written and was not disappointed at all. Tonight was the beginning of a new recipe making it's home in my cooking rotation.

Simple Hamburger Stroganoff

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2014
This was a hit dinner. My husband loves stroganoff so I was a little nervous to make it for him but he went back for seconds which is the best review he can ever give. Everyone else in the house liked it as well and I made it as written other than throwing in maybe half a cup of diced onions I needed to use up. It was a nice addition but likely unnecessary. I will experiment with cutting the cream cheese in half next time to see the difference. It makes a lot as previously mentioned but I doubt the leftovers will last long.

Cheesy Amish Breakfast Casserole

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2014
Incredible! I'm not usually a big fan of Swiss cheese but as another reviewer mentioned, it is quite good in this. I followed the recipe exactly other than tossing in two diced white mushrooms I had on hand and needed to use up. Next time I may add in maybe half a pound of ham or Canadian bacon to boost up it's meatiness some since my family is very carnivorous. Despite that, this recipe truly deserves five stars as is. I have a feeling this will become a regular part in our house's breakfast rotation.

My Chili

Reviewed: Oct. 2, 2011
I love this recipe and have used it a handful of times so far. It's simple and easy to tweak depending on your preference on how spicy or thick you like your chili. I only wish I could fast forward time during the hour it simmers so I could eat it sooner!

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2011
Being from Michigan, I assumed I knew how to do this already but used this recipe as my guide this year at Thanksgiving. The broth with the parsley is a nice touch that I haven't tried before, it added to my pan drippings nicely and the turkey turned out to be the best, most moist turkey I've prepared yet. This with a Butterball is definitely a winner.

Slow Cooker Maple Country Style Ribs

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2014
Incredible flavor combo! I ran out of soy sauce so I added some worcheshire sauce and maybe doubled the maple syrup. I think this would be taken over the top with a punch of liquid smoke. The tip about putting paper towels under the lid of the crock pot really worked! Thanks!! Favorite pork recipe I've found yet.

Poor Man's Beer Batter Fish

Reviewed: May 2, 2013
Make sure your oil is hot enough if your fish is turning out soggy, first of all. Very important. This recipe is VERY easy - the people I served it to were very impressed. I used Leinekuegel's Summer Shandy which gave a wonderful lemon flavor to the dish. While it's not necessarily the most delicious breaded fish I've ever had, it's still darn tasty and much easier so I had to give it five stars. I'll be making this again soon, I'm sure.

Proper English Cottage Pie

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2014
This was a simple, delicious meal that needs no alterations. Everyone was a fan and I even went back for seconds which I almost never do. I also love that I almost always have these ingredients on hand. This will definitely be an addition to my dinner recipe rotation.

White Peach Sangria

Reviewed: May 22, 2014
Absolute hit at my birthday party! I cut it with Vernor's ginger ale to keep people from hitting the floor because without it, the sangria is VERY strong. I used New Amsterdam peach flavored vodka. Delicious and easy to make, especially if using frozen fruit.

Mango Quesadillas

Reviewed: May 22, 2014
Interesting and delicious take on the standard quesadiilla. I recommend dicing the mangos very small as the sweet taste is a nice addition but when you bite into a larger chunk the contrast becomes a bit too severe. The seasoning is spot on.

Grilled Corn on the Cob

Reviewed: May 2, 2013
Wonderful! I took the advice of other reviewers... soaked in water for thirty minutes, didn't bother removing the silk (good idea, it practically falls off after being cooked). The end product reminded of fresh corn on the cob I used to have back home in Illinois, really delicious. Thanks for posting this simple but great recipe!

Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 22, 2011
The recipe is great as it is, no need for alteration. These taste exactly like mint chocolate chip ice cream... but are better because they're cookies! Use Andes creme de menthe baking chips for the best result. They're a hit where ever I take them and simply impossible to keep in the house for longer than a day. A must-bake if you love mint.

Juicy Butt Steaks

Reviewed: May 10, 2014
Nothing fancy here yet this recipe is simple and delicious. I didn't have enough ketchup on hand so I ended up doing 1/3 ketchup and 2/3 Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce. Left it in the crock pot on low for about seven hours while I was at work and this fell right off the bone. My picky eater husband said it was "pretty good" and when it comes to a recipe with so few ingredients and so little effort, I give it two thumbs up.
