About this Cook
I'm married with one child. Cooking has always been something that I associate with family, with good memories of being together with the people I love. What I love most is how making and eating the favorite dish of a loved one who's passed on or making something they loved to make is like having them back if only for a small time.
My favorite things to cook
I love cooking just about anything. My Grandma Drescher always used to tell me if you can read, you can cook. Consequently, I like to experiment with whatever recipe I can get my hands on. My absolute favorite though are rich hot heavy things that warm you in winter: stews, stuffed cabbage, hearty comfort foods.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Pork and sauer kraut with heaps of mashed potatoes; stuffed cabbage; raisin filled cookies; zucchini bread; all sorts of pies and cookies; meatloaf
My cooking triumphs
This chocolate peanut butter pie I made once, so delicious; a plum tatin; my pies...I've gotten really good at pie dough; boeuf bourgignon; chicken tikka masala; irish soda bread, especially fried in bacon drippings; lasagna; stuffed shells. Once I was making this lemon-scented mascarpone trifle I saw on Every-Day Italian. It involved strawberries, but we also had some fresh blueberries on hand. So my friend and I made a blueberry sauce gelatin to add between layers... it makes an awesome fourth of July dish for gatherings.
My cooking tragedies
Occasionally I get so excited about a new recipe and I'll rush myself and forget some really crucial ingredient. Recently I was making an apple crostata and I forgot to put sugar in the dough. I will say after I redid it, it was the flakiest crust ever. I've screwed up other stuff. I can't remember anything so tragic as to be unfixable though.

Arjun's Lime Chicken Rice
Freaking love this. I made it for dinner tonight and it's a delight. I love the tang of the lime with the hotness of the jalapeno. It's just wonderful.

California Grilled Veggie Sandwich
I tried this and I was unsure how much I'd like it, but it was fantastic. I made a couple changes, just small. I wanted to add a little more protein and nutritional value than mayonnaise, so instead of making the lemon garlic mayonnaise I used a white bean hummus. Very easy to make, very yummy. I also used mozzarella instead of feta just because it was what I had on hand. I thought it was great, and my husband loved it too!

Spicy Chipotle Turkey Burgers
These were delicious. They were just the right amount of spiciness for us. They were very juicy and flavorful. Great recipe.
