I have another blog that I use to review vegan recipes I've tried from all over.   Here on allrecipes, I focus mostly on veganizing non-vegetarian recipes that look interesting.  Here's to furthering the art and work of cooking vegan. MORE

We've had WAY too much excitement here lately in Northern Virginia.  First, we had an earthquake (5.9) last Tuesday, then this past weekend storms and loads of rain, courtesy of Hurricane Irene.  My son insisted on all of us staying at my mom's for the weekend, which in itself was stressful. … MORE

WOW!  I am getting married in my parents' backyard on the 24th.  I don't have much time to plan the menu, we will be cooking ourselves, and the items I decide upon have to have certain characteristics in common: I need two major meat items for the omnivores in the family (everyone except me… MORE

Just about everything one finds in fast food restaurants has hidden animal protein/elements in it.  McDonalds' french fries are a good example.  They have "natural beef flavoring" added.  What is this all about?  Needless to say, I won't be eating those any… MORE

I have made a decision to go vegan.  No, I do not watch Oprah, and to tell you the truth I'd just as soon not.  My reasons are varied: I need to lose weight in the worst sort of way, and a good lot of the food I was eating was cheese and eggs; I do not want to support factory… MORE

I'm quoting from "A Charlie Brown Christmas".  All of us are together this year - my fiancé is here, hopefully my oldest daughter will make it home Christmas Day, and my three teens are here.  We had a scare with my mother - she was hospitalized for extreme shoulder pain, but tests… MORE

I knew eventually the time would come that I would be responsible for the Thanksgiving feast.  I have to work this week, with only Thursday off.  My kids are off that day, plus Wednesday and Friday.  I think we're going to pick up a turkey tonight, and put it in the fridge.  But I'm kind of… MORE

First off, let me say I LOVE!  I use the recipe box and shopping list features every week to plan my meals and grocery shopping.  I have just begun to read blogs here, and am learning quite a bit about cooking, and a lot of other things. A little introduction to my family. … MORE

About Me
I'm a retired Navy musician. I play piano for my church on Sundays. and give clarinet lessons Saturdays. Weekdays, I work for the USMC. I have four children, two girls and twin boys. I have a house rabbit and seven cats. In addition to playing clarinet, piano and flute, I enjoy making jewelry when I have the time and the materials.
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy trying new ways of cooking vegetables, and other vegan recipes. It's also fun veganizing traditional favorites.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I really enjoy baking zucchini bread loaves to give as gifts for Christmas. I also enjoy cooking with my kids and sharing the work and the meal.
My cooking triumphs
Butternut Squash with pasta and sage is something I was surprised to find my kids like. They also liked vegan colcannon, although they added mayonnaise to it.
My cooking tragedies
I've blown up an egg in the microwave - more than once.
