Is your problem gluten? Or faddish eating?

I nice little article on the Gluten Issue.

By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer

It sounds like an unfolding epidemic: A decade ago, virtually no one in the U.S. seemed to have a problem eating gluten in bread and other foods. Now, millions do.

Gluten-free products are flying off grocery shelves, and restaurants are boasting of meals with no gluten. Celebrities on TV talk shows chat about the digestive discomfort they blame on the wheat protein they now shun. Some churches even offer gluten-free Communion wafers.

Funny you should raise this issue, I was just thinking about it the other day. I was wondering if a lot of people were gluten intolerant and just didn't have recourse, or if now people are just jumping on a bandwagon. I know there are people with real intolerance issues certainly, but I think many folks have just diagnosed themselves. Just like migraine headaches. People say oh i have a migraine headache. They have no basis for this, have not been diagnosed with migraines by a doctor and they are a specific type of headache. When you ask them oh how do you know it is a migraine, they reply well it really hurts.

I think in this age of being able to look up anything on the computer, a lot of people have self diagnosed themselves, as you say covergirl. I have a friend who says she is gluten intolerant on one hand, and with the other, doses herself with a regimen of herbs and minerals, and fasting days,to combat it. Granted either of those might be beneficial in or of themselves, but I'm not sure they are recommended treatment for what she sees as her problem. Is there actual testing that can determine if that is the problem, or is it just a matter of trial and error with your diet?

Allergists are equipped to determine what your sensitivities are and how to remedy them, this includes foods.

I have to wonder what role GMOs play in the dietary problems so many of us seem to have developed lately. Between all the chemicals, mystery ingredients, high fructose corn syrup and inappropriate ingredients like cellulose it is a wonder more people aren't ill.

Sweet cook- there is a test. The first is a "screening" blood test to measure your antibody level to gluten. If positive, the confirmatory test is actual biopsies of the stomach to examine for damage/inflammation secondary to gluten.

Thanks, poush for the info. I wonder if she has actually had a screening blood test for this. Sounds like a simple enough way to diagnosis initially if that is her problem - will mention it to her.

in a society that's become increasingly drug-dependent, i think there is a definite need for people to be proactive and, to some level, self-diagnose. it is important to do your research and take advantage of information now widely available. if it isn't harmful, why wouldn't one try eliminating certain foods before taking medications to placate symptoms? of course, it's important to follow guidelines for good nutrition, and it's important to be wary of money-making schemes that take advantage of fads, but ultimately, it's most important to take responsibility for your own health and take steps to increase it for better quality of life!
