I have been seeing signs all over the place for A turkey shoot.

Maybe I was a bit nieve in thinking that a bunch of guys would get together throw a bunch of turkeys out into a field, and shoot them about 500 times.

I was thinking poor little turkey.

Really I am no stranger to guns and rifles, I even have a Beretta M9A1 (for protection) With A Concealed carry permit.

So I looked on Wikipedia For Turkey Shoot

A "turkey shoot" is a shooting contest where frozen turkeys are awarded as prizes. The shoot is most commonly held, using shotguns aimed at paper targets about 25-35 yards away. Original turkey shoots, however, dating at least to the time of James Fenimore Cooper, were contests in which live turkeys were tied down in a pen and shot from 25-35 yards. If the turkey died, the shooter received it as a prize. Today, turkey shoots are still popular in rural America. The winner is chosen according to which target has a shot closest to its center cross-mark. This removes almost all skill from the contest, and allows every shooter an equal chance.

About 20 years ago, we visited relatives in W.VA and a turkey shoot meant hunting wild turkey. That may have changed over the years, but their deer hunting sure hasn't!

My FIL would go to turkeyshoots all the time, but his eyesight is not good enough to use a gun anymore. There is one not far from where we live. Two years ago my son decided to go along with him. It was a great bonding moment for the 2 of them.

A turkey shoot is ... a group of men that pay a few bucks to take a shot at a target... the best shot, closest to the target, wins a turkey!

I have been to the kind Terry speeks of and I also have been to a few at the bowling ally ... yes I did say bowling ally. On leage night we would pay $1.00 a game or if you were really good $2 or even $3 a game and if you got a turkey... thats 3 strikes in a row for non bowlers. You won a Turkey gift card and could go get you turkey at the market. I was luckey enough one year that I won our turkey and two more to give to the food bank.

My bowling league is doing that this year. We can potentially win a turkey, ham, and pie. It's pretty cool.
