I arrived on Hilton Head Island, SC late Sept 13th, 2012 to visit our friend Shari. We spent the evening relaxing on the deck with a cocktail after a long day of travel. Hilton Head Island is a small island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is only 9 miles
wide by 20 miles long. The weather was perfect when I arrived, sunny, 80's and not a cloud in the sky. The air smelled of seasalt and the ocean breezes were delightful. I don't think I've ever seen the sky so blue. The next day we met Ava Davis (author
of "Nothing Short of Miraculous") for lunch at The Boathouse. We relaxed under the live oaks on the deck and watched the boats sail by and the dolphins playing in the Intercoastal Waterway. I chatted with Ava about her upcoming book. Then we took a tour
of the island. It's a beautiful place. Pres. Abraham Lincoln gave the island to the newly freed slaves after the Civil War. He deemed in useless land (apparantly he'd never been here)! Now it is one of the most desireable vacation spots in the country.
That evening we went back to Shari's a prepared a wonderful dinner, bacon wrapped filet mignon with sauteed garlic mushrooms and salad with homemade balsamic vinegrette. The next day we went to Bella Italia for lunch. Now that was a slice of pizza! The
staff was so friendly, and the chef came out to wish me a pleasant time while I was visiting. That evening we smoked ribs on the grill with corn on the cob and tomato salad.
Of course, no trip to Hilton Head would be complete without a trip to the beach. We sat at the beach at the Dunes House, which is a quaint little restaurant right on the beach. They were setting up for a wedding later that afternoon. We watched the shrimp
boats out on the ocean. After a few hours with the sand between our toes we decided to take a walk around the Harbour at Shelter Cove. There were many beautiful yachts and we stumbled across an cute little restaurant, where we couldn't resist stopping for
a cocktail. It was called San Miguel's. I admired the foliage and all the hibiscus' that were in bloom. That's one thing about Hilton Head, something here is always in bloom here. Saturday evening we were invited to a friend of Shari's for a Lowcountry
Boil and boy was that good. Fresh shrimp, boiled potatoes, corn on the cob and keilbasa. These people sure know how to entertain! I met many new friends during my stay. Sunday there is a ritual of meeting friends for brunch at Reilley's South, where we
sat on the deck and enjoyed the wonderful weather. We had mimosa's and a bite to eat, then it was off to yet another beach. We headed to the famed Tiki Hut, where I walked along the ocean and stopped to chat with the beach patrol. Then we went to the famous
Harbour Town, many large yachts and home to The Heritage Golf Tournament. What a view!
Alas, the week went by far too soon, there was so much more I would have liked to do, maybe on my next trip when I come back to visit Shari. I now understand why the people of Hilton Head say "Life's Good", because it truly is a beautiful relaxing place
