Old Fashioned Mac and Cheese

Reviewed: Sep. 21, 2013
I made this exactly as written and I LOVED it. The flavors just meld together perfectly and the onion adds an extra flavor that I wasn't sure would help, but it did! Great mac and cheese. I agree with a few others here about ratings. Please, if you're going to rate a recipe then make as written. It does no one any good if you're going to substitute left and right and then say it didn't taste good. Or if you don't like onions, skip this recipe, obviously it's not for you! This will be my only Old Fashioned Mac and Cheese recipe going forward. I can't believe how good this came out. I had tried so many mac and cheese recipes on here and none were up to par for me. But this one? It ROCKS!!!!! I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

Grandma Johnson's Scones

Reviewed: Jul. 18, 2012
I did not change a thing with this recipe and I was amazed at how perfect these came out! The BEST moist, tender, flaky scones with just the right sweetness. I added golden raisins. This is a lot of dough, so it could make a lot more than 12 scones. This is definitely the best tasting homemade scone I have ever eaten. Sure to be a hit as gifts or at a brunch buffet. They are so buttery good I didn't even need to slather on additional butter. Thank you Rob for Grandma Johnson's scones. Wow. BTW I followed the recipe exactly; mixed the sour cream with the baking soda and set aside. It began to rise while I mixed the dry ingredients. I used cold butter and cubed it into the flour mixture and cut it in with my pastry cutter. Then added the sour cream mix and stirred in a slightly beaten egg just so the whites and yolk would mix in. Baked it in a 350 preheated electric oven for 15 min exactly. I don't see any reason to alter this recipe one bit. No need to cream the butter with the sugar (as another reviewer suggested) as I think that would alter the makeup of the dough. You want the marbling of the butter throughout. Perfect as is! If I could give this 10 stars I would!!!

Blonde Brownies I

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2012
OMG were these amazingly good. Just the way I love blondies; soft, chewy and gooey, if you don't overbake. I baked in a glass 8x8 dish for 20 min and they came out perfect. Am glad I only put chocolate chips on half the dough because unless you eat while still warm and gooey, the chocolate hardens and, for me, ruins the great brown sugary taste of this. So for me, they're perfect without the chocolate. Just a PERFECT blondie! I could bake these every other day!

Chocolate Truffle Cookies with Sea Salt

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2011
These were very, very rich! They were easy to make and I followed the recipe exactly. These cookies are best eaten warm, when the cookie inside is gooey. Once they cool they are like a truffle candy! If you're looking for a crisp cookie this is NOT the cookie for you.

Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2011
I made this to go with honeybaked ham for Easter dinner. Wow. Everyone LOVED these potatoes! Almost everyone had seconds. My brother even pointed to the serving dish and said, "best ever, that's REALLY good!" high praise from him! One caveat though, it calls for a 1 quart dish, I couldn't fit all the ingredients into a 1 quart so used my oval dutch oven. This is definitely a 2 quart dish recipe! I didn't change a thing in the recipe either. I think if one used very small russet potatoes it might have fit in the 1 qt. dish. But there was no mention of size and I went with medium sized russets (frankly my store didn't have small russets, only medium and huge!). Someone said they had to layer the cheese but as I said I followed the recipe exactly and poured the cheese sauce over the layers of potatoes and onions and the sauce found its tasty way into all the nooks and crannies! Thank you for a terrific potatoes au gratin recipe!

Apple Pie Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2011
OMG, these are amazing! I did NOT alter the recipe one bit and they are the best muffins I have ever tasted. The brown sugar and butter help cook the apples into a soft, carmelized treat. As someone who likes a lot of spice I held back the urge to add cinnamon to the batter and am glad I did. I followed the recipe exactly and they came out moist and delicious with plenty of flavor. They smelled so good I had to have one before they'd even cooled off. Made these to bring to work tomorrow but I sure hope I have enough left to bring in! Just delicious. Thank you, Jan! I did have batter leftover after filling 12 muffin cups, however the batter was so yummy it wasn't a problem at all!

Rosemary Lemon Grilled Chicken

Reviewed: May 31, 2010
Wow this was good! the only change I made was to use Olive Oil instead of butter. I have fresh rosemary and used a suggestion to put some sprigs on the coals. 4 min each side and they were done, tender, juicy and so tasty! Now I have a great recipe to use my fresh rosemary and meyer lemons! I also had some red potatoes so sliced them about 1/4th inch and brushed with the marinade laid 'em on the grill and they took 4 min each side... YUM! Thank you for this marinade for boneless skinless chicken breasts!!!

Four Cheese Margherita Pizza

Reviewed: Apr. 17, 2010
This was terrific! I marinated the tomatoes in the garlic oil for a good half hour and used goat cheese instead of feta (I find feta salty and like it in tiny portions!) and this was fantastic! I put the pizza on the oven rack and the crust got nice and crispy and the garlic flavor! Molto Bene!!!

Best Ever Banana Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 1, 2010
Am always searching for a moist banana bread and this is it! I used 3 large ripe bananas because I don't often stick to only 1 cup of mashed bananas in order to get an intense banana flavor and this did the trick. I also only had egg beaters so used that instead of whole eggs, added a tsp of vanilla and 1 tsp of ground ginger. Took it into work today and it's almost all gone save for the ends! Oh and used 1 cup packed brown sugar and 1/2 cup white sugar to give it a more carmelized sweetness.

Terrific Turkey Chili

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2010
Excellent. I don't usually like turkey chili but this was delicious. Of course, like others, I kicked it up a notch by adding a small can of diced jalapenos, a teaspoon of garlic powder, 2 teaspoons of chopped garlic when cooking the onions and bell peppers and I did add 4 tbl of tomato paste along with 2 tbl of brown sugar & 1 can each of kidney and pinto beans to add to the fiber. The blend of spices and beef broth really make this versatile and savory!
