Food brings family together!

Some of the greatest conversations my family has ever had was over a meal. When my husband's family gets together we all hear stories of when the kids were young, stories about grandparents or their own food misadventures growing up. I love it! I now know why I always felt so comfortable in the military when I would feed my husband's entire unit lol. You get used to feeding a large group.

Tonight was my MILs birthday and I had about 10 people to feed. I made 2 pot roasts, 2 bags of egg noodles, 2 bags of butternut squash, salad and honey cornbread. Then the desserts- my SIL brought pumpkin cheesecake, I made pumpkin spice cookies and had a birthday cake for the MIL. Dinner was to die for! Three different people commented when they came to the table, "Wow, I haven't had pot roast in ages." By the end of the meal the only thing left was enough pot roast and veggies for me to take for lunch, a small container of butternut squash and 3 pieces of honey cornbread. Guess that means the meal was a success lol.

This meal was a test run for Thanksgiving. This year I am hosting and should be expecting 20-25 people. In 2009, I had 17 people stay with my family over Christmas for 5 days and served breakfast, lunch and dinner I think I will be able to handle Thanksgiving.

I really hope that this tradition is something my own kids will cherish and pass on to their own someday.

About Me
I am a displaced military wife, finally putting down some permanent roots back in my hometown of Cincinnati, OH. In 7 years my family has moved 6 times!! In my years of moving, and all the different duty stations, it has made me a more diverse individual and eager to try new dishes. Finding authentic food items is a bit easier when you have a Jungle Jim's to frequent :) My name is Emily. I have two beautiful children and a wonderful husband. October 11, 2008, my husband was combat injured in Iraq. He was shot in the face by a sniper. We are a blessed family! He is still with us today. Because of the challenges our family has faced it has caused me to find more dishes that fit our new lifestyle and are quick to make. My husband has traveled the world and eaten many different types of food but always comes back to mine!! Nothing like some good home cooking :)
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake!! Some of my favorite things to make are pumpkin bread and pumpkin pie but I also just love to cook period. I love to create my own dishes and try them out on both my husband and my co-workers.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Family traditions are a pretty new thing for my family as we are still in the process of creating our own. One thing I am big on is spending as much time with family as possible!! I think something important when having family get togethers is good food. Food always seems to bring people together. My kids, husband and I always make cookies before the holidays. One of the new traditions I want to start is going down to a local homeless shelter and helping to feed them dinner. I think it is important for my children to see humility and generosity.
My cooking triumphs
I have burnt my share of dishes over the years!! Made the smoke alarms go off and even caused us to go out for dinner when a dish didn't turn out so well.
