About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
Italian bread, Roast chicken with the gravy from scratch, biscuits, any great bar cookie, custard from scratch
My cooking tragedies
an underbaked loaf of bread, sourdough that doesn't rise... I guess general bread failure is the saddest thing for me.

One Bowl Brownies
I am shocked--these taste oddly bland to me. I followed the recipe exactly and they look just like the picture, but the flavor is just... missing! I am thinking they needed more vanilla and perhaps 1/4 to 1/2 tsp salt. Or were we supposed to use salted butter? I can't believe 4 oz of baking chocolate can make such a disappointing flavor. The texture of these is not bad, but I still think it is worth it to beat the eggs and sugar first, separately, then add the melted (and cooled!) stuff, as most brownie recipes will tell you to do; it's really not that much more work.

Sweet Potato Pie VII
This is really good! I have made it twice--the first time I didn't have quite enough sweet potato; the second time I had too much... Rather than resort to weights and calculators I simply guessed (and carelessly!) at how much to adjust the other ingredients--It still came out great, both times. You know you have a good, easy recipe when you can mess it up a bit and it still works! The spices are necessary in my opinion; I skimped on them somewhat the second time and it just seemed a little too plain for everyone, even my mom who is usually very sensitive to spices.
