About this Cook
I'm a video game nerd who has fun messing around in the kitchen.
My favorite things to cook
I love to make explosively-full omelets (especially at "brinner" or breakfast-for-dinner), anything in my slow-cooker, and Mexican-inspired casseroles.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite family meals growing up were chicken & dumplings, blinis with applesauce, and pot roast with carrots and egg noodles. New traditions w/ my husband, daughter and I include nights of the week where one of us always chooses the menu, and one "free-for-all" night that I have off from the kitchen, and they can scrounge for leftovers. I also like using Sunday afternoon for making several days' worth of meals ahead to make work days easier.
My cooking triumphs
It was very intimidating to host my first Thanksgiving a la rock_lobster several years back, but it turned out successful and delicious, and now I'm always happy to pitch in at any holiday meal.
My cooking tragedies
I accidentally put sweetened condensed milk into a corn chowder instead of evaporated milk! /barf. Also, I was on vacation and had to make do with what the rented cottage had and prepared Paella in a big soup pot with ill-fitting lid. 2 hours later, and hungry folks nibbling hors d'oeuvres in anticipation of dinner, and the rice was half crunchy-disaster, half squishy pudding-consistency. Mistakenly bought puff pastry dough instead of phyllo dough for a slender, Nutella-filled dessert treat that ended up exploding into a dough-ey snake in my oven.

Smoked Sausage Casserole
Smoked Sausage Casserole Haiku: "Okay, this was odd. Only made for one reason: had that chili sauce." So doing an ingredient search on AR for anything including Heinz Chili Sauce yielded this recipe that conveniently had other items that I typically have around, but why did I not actually think about that combination of ingredients before starting to put this together? I browned the sausage w/ the onions (prefer smoked sausage a little more "done") and wouldn't have wanted raw onion bites floating around a casserole, but followed everything else, although nothing seemed to improve what turned out to be the most peculiar, unappetizing casserole I think I've ever prepared. We picked at our plates, and tossed the leftovers. Sorry for the less-than-thrilled review but my husband was in a fit of giggles when I served this, it was just THAT weird.

Green Pepper Rice
Green Pepper Rice Haiku: "Nice change from plain rice! Didn't change one single thing, 'cept changed the servings." Dropped rice to 1/2 c. and reduced the servings/ingredient ratio accordingly. We enjoyed it alongside AR's "Tender Italian Baked Chicken" and a salad, a tasty way to add some color and flavor to plain rice!

Cynthia's Famous Chili
Cynthia's Famous Chili Haiku: "Dropped the pinto beans. But the rest I kept the same. What's up with spices?" It was hard to tell if the spices were accidentally duplicated in the ingredient list, but I didn't see much point to seasoning the ground beef w/ all of that, followed by adding everything to the pot while measuring all the spices out again, so I just added it all at once after the meat was browned and drained, which incidentally, the recipe doesn't indicate to drain. I can't say that this chili blew our minds, but I thought it would be way more flavorful w/ all of those spices, not to mention also including a McCormick packet of chili seasoning; if anything, the packet plus the 1 TB seasoning salt made this awfully salty, so we didn't get as much enjoyment over dragging Frito Scoops through it. Maybe w/ some changes here and there I'd make it again, but otherwise, won't live on as a famous recipe in our house.
