I live in Winnipeg with my husband and our two very large cats Lucy and Dennis. Our summers are very short so when able I love to be out in the yard gardening and sitting in the gazebo reading. I am still trying to figure out how to grow my tomatoes and peppers. I have a very shaded back yard and I have not had much luck. I will keep trying though. I enjoy spending time with my family, and reading cookbooks has become an obsession of mine. I only wish that I could make a living testing recipes. THAT would be incredible !!!!
My favorite things to cook
Living in "Winterpeg", I have plenty of time to spend indoors cooking. I love to experiment with new recipes. During the winter months I like to prepare comfort foods but I also like to look ahead to bar-b-que season and find new potential grilling recipes. I really love to cook anything pasta and shellfish on a regular basis. Soups are a favorite of mine as well.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite family cooking tradition is my mother's comfort soups and stews. She also made THE best gravy in the world!!!! I am still trying to get it right. my mother also made the best "THAT", which was her version of nuts and bolts. Whenever she made it I would bring some home and my husband would happily say "oh, that!" So that is how "THAT" stuck. Whew!
My cooking triumphs
I have never been much for baking but I have been attempting to do more lately. I actually baked my first [good] pie! I used a pie plate that was larger than required and found that it was only 1/2 filled by the time I added the cherry pie filling. Not wanting to waste it I added some wild blueberries to top it up. I made a lattice top and it was good.
My cooking tragedies
I was cooking a turkey in the oven when I realized the door of the oven was not completely shut. Once I recitified the problem I re-set the timer to what I thought would be appropriate time to make up for the loss of heat in the oven. I failed to check on it. The timer went off and ..........well......turkey jerky anyone?! Thank goodness I also had a ham to fall back on!
