About this Cook
Day Trader by day, proficient yet humble cook by night and/or over the weekends. Along with cooking and somewhat related, I enjoy beer, wine and most recently discovered Single Malt Scotch Whisky...amazing and fun! As I have always told friends and family who are aspiring to learn how to cook... ..."If you can read, you can cook"! "It just takes the three 'P's to become a very good cook; Passion, Patience and Practice". Now get in the kitchen and get cookin'!
My favorite things to cook
Variety is the spice of life... literally and figuratively. I'm always looking to develop & expand my culinary prowess. My latest culinary fetish...French Cooking. Souffles, mousse's, crepes, sauces, slow roasting meats and more. As a collector of many cookbooks and as I taught myself how to cook, I sought after some of the best cookbooks available. Only until recently was I exposed to "Mastering the Art of French Cooking". How it took me so long to discover this gem is a mystery to me. It is a must have cookbook for any new or experienced cook IMHO! Thanks Julia C. for the late in life inspiration!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Creating a bakers dozen variety of Christmas cookies each year with my sister, using tried and true family favorite recipes as well as discovering new "must have" recipes that we have collected through the years.
My cooking triumphs
Most recently...successfully planning, constructing, cooking and serving a delicious Turducken for Christmas dinner 2009. Labor intensive to say the least but worth it. Next time however, I will host a "Turducken Party" and delegate phases of the process.
My cooking tragedies
When I was about 9 or 10 years old and first learning how to cook, my mother let me cook pork spare ribs on the outdoor grill. Little did I know that the BBQ sauce needs to go on late in the cooking process, not early or before the meat is cooked! What a disaster but, it did not deter my curiosity about learning how to cook and only helped me learn and grow from that experience.

Creamy Clam Dip
This is a great clam dip recipe. I hadn't had clam dip for years and stumbled across this recipe a few weeks ago. I've made it for the last two football weekend parties and, by popular demand serving it up a third time for Super Bowl 45. I added one additional can of drained clams. When mixing in the clam juice, I liked the consistency reached by adding not quite one full can of the clam juice. A few dashes of Tabasco was also added. Love this recipe.

Chicago-Style Hot Dog
I'm from Chicago. I served these (using Hebrew National franks as Vienna are not available in VA) while watching the Bears game on 1/16/11. Bears won to advance to NFC championship game. Was it the CS hot dogs that brought some luck to the outcome? Not sure but it sure didn't hurt. This recipe is the real deal! Followed the recipe to the T (T formation, Bears, get it?) but used pepperoncini's. We all raved about how awesome/authentic these dogs are. Go Bears, Go Cubs!!!

Ham Loaf I
This recipe is almost identical to our family recipe. Some variations include adding uncooked bacon strips across the top of the loaf, basting a simple sauce of a 1 can condensed tomato soup diluted with 1 1/2 -2 cans water, and serving with homemade or store-bought horseradish sauce (1 pt. whipped cream, mix in one bottle well drained horseradish). Delicious! One more thing, ground ham is not commonly available. You can buy a thick slice of ham and use your food processor to "grind" it into a nice ground ham texture.
