About this Cook
San Diego native, UCLA graduate, SWF, health conscious
My favorite things to cook
Food should be healthy & tasty, with added spices (garlic, curry, onion, oregano). Believe in "from-scratch" cooking whenever possible, and avoid "convenience non-foods." Have been experimenting with different kinds of soup using homemade vegetable broth. Love this site for new twists on budget ingredients; usually tweak the recipes to suit my natural cooking style.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Changed tradition of plain, bland food and overcooked vegetables to creative and spicy combinations even less health-conscious friends love. Family company dishes of stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, turkey stuffing, vegetarian lasagne, were improved upon.
My cooking triumphs
Expanding my homemade economical flavorful soup collection, with suggestions from this site. Also found easy and tasty vegetable recipes, some even made frozen veggies appealing. Also loved the recipe for egg dumplings.
My cooking tragedies
The one time I tried to cook fish, even my cat wouldn't eat it. Harder to overcook chicken and beef dishes. I learned my lesson well.

Oven Meatballs
Good once I added ginger and honey. Substituted brown sugar for white sugar, and tomato juice for 1/2 of the ketchup.

Curried Hummus
I substituted lime juice for most of the lemon juice. Like the addition of curry and hot red pepper and black pepper. Ended up much better and cheaper than the store bought versions.

Donut Muffins
Made great recipe even better by using homemade spiced applesauce for 1/2 margarine and nutmeg. Didn't need as much butter for the top, as long as you had the spices when the muffins are still hot. Had luck using 2nd half of the batter the following day for more. Thanks.
