My favorite family cooking traditions
We have a family cook off every few months. Everyone finds a recipe on AR or comes up with an idea and we shop, cook and enjoy together. We have had some pretty interesting meals!
My cooking triumphs
Teaching my kids to cook. All 5 kids know how to shop for groceries and put together a few meals. They can bake, too! Now, if they could do their laundry just as well......;-)
My cooking tragedies
Leaving a cake on the table to answer the doorbell and come back to find our 2 Great Danes chowing down on the "OMG-this-took-me-forever-to-make-and-decorate-for-Christmas-dinner" cake! Arghhhhhh!

Baked Ziti with Cheese
This was just OK for my gang. My 14yo daughter made this by herself and it was certainly easy enough and uncomplicated. She boiled the pasta then placed it in a baking dish. Using the same pot from the pasta she made the Bechamel sauce in it. Rather than dirty another pot she heated the milk in the measuring cup in the microwave. She did add garlic and some pesto she found in the fridge to bump up the flavor along with crushed red pepper. The pasta baked very nicely and was cheesy but the main thought from everyone was they did not like the "jarred sauce essence" and were left wishing it had some ricotta mixed in. No one left the table hungry but we won't likely make again.

Grilled Tequila-Lime Shrimp
This was a no go for us. All we could taste was the lime. We used fresh garlic but the flavors were bland due to the overwhelming lime.

Fettuccini Carbonara
Did not like the way the pasta completely clumped together. The sauce was not light and creamy. Family liked the flavor but not so much the dry texture. Was (almost) a nice side for some grilled steak in place of a plain old baked potato.
