Happy Shrimp

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2014
This recipe is great! We switched out the cayenne for our preferred chili pepper (Matanzas chilis from the Spice and Tea Exchange), but otherwise followed the recipe exactly. It's a lovely mix of flavors and the sauce mixes great with the angel hair pasta. We had leftover angel hair pasta with lemon and pea greens, and it was a great base for these shrimp.

Celery Root and Cheese Bake

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2014
Delicious as is! We got a celeriac in our CSA basket and had no idea what to do with it until we found this recipe. We made it exactly following the recipe and really enjoyed it. I think next time we might replace the nutmeg with something else like chili powder or garlic for variety.

Crunchy Oven Fried Tilapia

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2013
Great texture from the breading, and it was good. Next time I'll add some more spices to the breading. As is, it's a little bland for my taste.

Kielbasa with Brussels Sprouts

Reviewed: Nov. 10, 2012
Good recipe overall, but I only had turkey kielbasa, which I think was a little bland for the recipe. Definitely will make again with the real kielbasa.

Sweet Potato and Parsnip Puree

Reviewed: Nov. 10, 2012
These were delicious! However, I would have liked the parsnip flavor to be more prominent.

I really liked this salad. It was simple but tasty. I would probably add a little more lemon juice next time.

Quick Fish Tacos

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2012
Good recipe, but we had problems getting our fish "golden brown." The fish cooked in the given amount of time and flaked nicely, but did not turn golden brown or crisp up like we were anticipating. Since it wasn't crisp, it got a little lost in the cabbage mix when we made the tacos. Overall great taste, and we will try it again with flour or breading on the fish to get it crispy. One other note - we used green cabbage instead of red and it tasted good, just make sure to cut the cabbage into very thin strips. Finally, the recipe doesn't say what to do with the cilantro, so we used it as a garnish.

French Onion Sliders

Reviewed: Feb. 5, 2012
Made these to eat while we watched the super bowl, and we really enjoyed them. Nice and simple, tasted great. The french onion soup was a bit salty for me, but I usually feel that way about canned soup. We used 1lb ground beef and 1lb ground turkey for a double batch. Only 4 stars because it doesn't really seem like a recipe - more like a creative use of canned soup.

Mom's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2010
Excellent recipe! I made it last weekend, and all my roommates loved them :) They stayed soft and fresh for as long as they lasted (about 4 days). I disagree with another reviewer-the raw cookie dough is delicious! I just bought more chocolate chips and chocolate pudding to try this recipe again. One small problem I encountered was crumbling more than other cookies. I took several on a trip with me, and they stuck together and crumbled more than I thought they would in the bag. Next time I will put them in a plastic container instead of a bag. Overall, a wonderful recipe that I will definitely make for years to come, with pudding and chip variations, of course.

Banana Cake VII

Reviewed: May 16, 2010
This cake was excellent. We upped the servings to 36 and baked it in a 13x9 pan as mentioned in another review, which worked out perfectly. Then we cut out a banana shape and decorated with chocolate buttercream icing and chocolate chips for my boyfriend's niece's 4th birthday party. The cake tasted delicious and was even borderline nutritious! A note of caution, however: this cake is more akin to banana bread in cake form than banana flavored cake. It's a bit denser than a normal cake, but I think that is better for a banana cake :) Because it's a little less sweet, the leftover scraps made a great breakfast :) Thanks for the fantastic recipe!

Chocolate Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2010
I got a good chocolate sauce out of this. I wanted to use it in the mini fondue pot I received for Christmas, and it worked alright. While I was cooking it, it seemed thin, so I added about a scant Tbls cornstarch. This turned out to be a bad idea because the sauce thickened as it cooled. Therefore, I recommend sticking with the original ingredients (except I used 1 C milk in place of the water as others did) and letting it cool to thicken. I was able to add a little milk in after it cooled to thin it out, so no harm done :) Overall, a great recipe that is easy to make with ingredients on hand

Bread Machine Bagels

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2010
My boyfriend and I had excellent results with this recipe. However, we had to add a bit of extra water to the dough and another 1/4 tsp yeast. We got 8 good size bagels out of a batch the second time. We made one batch yesterday and liked them so much we made another batch today :) One note, though-Let them rise until they are pretty round and nicely shaped, which for us was 40 minutes in a fairly cold kitchen. This is a great recipe for the beginning bread machine experimenter (aka my boyfriend and I).
