I'm a Texan girl who finds cooking and baking both challenging and relaxing at the same time. It's my greatest de-stresser, and I do it often. I'm convinced that if you love food, you can be a good cook. Or at the very least, a good critic.
My favorite things to cook
Right now I'm obsessed with grilling, and I absolutely love to bake. My husband is not the most adventurous guy when it comes to food, but he has enough confidence in my cooking to step outside of his comfort zone from time to time. At the moment, I'd love to cook more Asian food.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I don't have too many long standing traditions, but I've recently decided to start some. We never celebrated birthdays or holidays growing up and now that I have a little one of my own, I love love love to go nuts for her birthday. After her first, I decided to seriously venture into the world of baking and cake decorating. Now, I bake and decorate a cake for every family birthday (the in-laws love me). I love the artisanship involved with cooking and baking especially. It's a lovely talent to have discovered and something that I can "bring to the table" for all of our holiday meals.
My cooking triumphs
For my daughter's 2nd birthday, I chose to create a Yo Gabba Gabba cake. This was my first attempt at sculpting with fondant, and I have to say I did a killer job. The cake itself was a bit odd and lumpy, but the sculptures were freakin' awesome! I'll post pictures.
My cooking tragedies
My first cooking tragedy occured when I was way too young to be baking alone. Sometime in elementary, I was on summer break and wanted cookies. God forbid I wait for mom to get home from work, so I opted to go it alone. The recipe book said I needed to add "1 tsp. soda." I thought it was easy enough, as we had plenty of coke in the fridge. Needless to say, I ended up with some pretty flat cookies. My older sisters thought my mistake was hilarious, albeit still delicious! Fortuntaely, there were no fires.
