About this Cook
I started cooking at the age of 9 when my mother went back to work. I didn't enjoy it then but as I grew into my teens I began to experiment with different recipes and developed a passion for making recipes "from scratch" instead of using boxed mixes or bought pasta. As I grew into my twenties I began developing a passion for baking cakes and found that I had a natural talent for cake decorating, thus starting 12 years of wedding & novelty cake decorating. Birthday cakes in our house were always interesting and fun. After developing some serious joint disabilities, retiring from my true passion in life was a very big decision for me. I then worked in a hospital for 15 years & loved it. Now I'm in Real Estate. But I will always wonder, if trained professionally in cake decorating, how far could I have gone???? I have two daughters, Kristin age 35, Jillian age 29, son-in-law, Matt. Grandaughter Kylie, age 10. Jill & Matt expect their 1st baby in May 08!
My favorite things to cook
slow cooker recipes (easy), chicken cutlets (my kids always loved them), cookies, my special chili recipe, my great homemade lentil soup recipe, hamburger pie (one of my kids favorites growing up)
My favorite family cooking traditions
christmas cookies (not so much any more, waiting for my girls to start baking now) christmas yum yum cake (my mothers recipe)
My cooking triumphs
teaching myself to make & decorate wedding & novelty cakes 35 years ago.
My cooking tragedies
A few of those decorated cakes have some interesting and fun stories . A roller skate cake skated into a door and fell on the floor in a million pieces (had to make a new one in record time), my daughter's head falling into the top of an anniversary cake. The base of a 50lb wedding cake cracked in half at 11pm the night before the wedding!!! And believe it or not.... all turned out fine in the end. Everything was fixed, re-baked, re-decorated & re-delivered all on time!!!!! And now we look back and laugh and say remember when..... And having to give it all up was the worst tragedy of all....
