I live in Pittsburgh after having lived literally from one side of the country to the other.
My husband and I have a huge garden every year and make everything from salsa to jams (four kinds) to sauerkraut and pickles (two kinds).
I grew up in a house where my mom cooked and baked and everything was from scratch. As she put it "a mix will never darken my doorstep"! LOL So I learned "right" how to cook and bake.
I married a chef whose sauces and BBQ are out of this world and between the two of us we're pretty dangerous in the kitchen!
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake but have quickly discovered how much I love making jams and other things from the garden.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every year my mom used to bake the best Christmas cookies. She's not doing it so much now that the kids are 'gone' so this year she came up to my house and we baked for three days! Gave the old stove (and the blood sugar) a workout. And I think created a tradition to replace the one of her doing it all by herself!
My cooking triumphs
I'm really proud of my breads and jams and all the stuff we've learned how to make from our garden over the past few years.
My cooking tragedies
My first attempt at making grape jam. Actually, it was my first attempt at making ANY kind of jam. I didn't realize that sugar makes things boil over. Fast. I turned my back for two minutes and next thing I know I've got grape jam boiling over down my stove, between the cabinet, on my dog's head (he didn't mind, he was busy licking the floor). It's nearly 3 years later and I am STILL cleaning grape jam out of the crevices of my stove!
